The Swiss agrienvironmental programme and its effects on selected biodiversity indicators Organic Eprints
Jeanneret, Philippe; Schüpbach, Beatrice; Pfiffner, Lukas; Herzog, Félix; Walter, Thomas.
In Switzerland, parallel to agri-environmental measures which apply directly to the field management, farmers had to convert at least 7% of their land to ecological compensation areas – ECA. Major ECA are extensified grassland, traditional orchards, hedges, and wild flower strips. In 2000, the situation shows that farmers practise the agri-environmental scheme all over Switzerland with a total of 120,000 hectares of different types of ECA. The introduction of ECA throughout the country's agricultural area can be seen as a large scale landscape restoration experiment. Its biological effects are evaluated in a monitoring programme. In a case study area of about 6 km2, in 1997, biodiversity indicators (spiders, carabid beetle and butterflies) were recorded...

Evaluation Ökomassnahmen: Biodiversität. Effekte ökologischer Ausgleichsflächen auf die Laufkäferfauna Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Luka, Henryk; Jeanneret, Philippe; Schüpbach, Beatrice.

Ecological cross compliance promotes farmland biodiversity in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Aviron, Stéphanie; Nitsch, Heike; Jeanneret, Philippe; Buholzer, Serge; Luka, Henryk; Pfiffner, Lukas; Pozzi, Stefano; Schüpbach, Beatrice; Walter, Thomas; Herzog, Felix.
In ecological cross compliance, farmers have to meet environmental standards in order to qualify for area-related direct payments. Because this is a strong financial incentive, cross compliance is a potentially powerful policy instrument. We monitored the effectiveness of cross compliance in promoting biodiversity on grassland and on arable land in Switzerland over 8 years. We observed measurable benefits for flora, butterflies, ground beetles, and spiders, in terms of species numbers and/or community composition. However, populations of threatened species showed no signs of benefit. While cross compliance has been in force in Switzerland for almost a decade, it has only recently been introduced in the neighbouring European Union. We argue that – provided...

Arthropod reaction to landscape and habitat features in agricultural landscapes Organic Eprints
Jeanneret, Philippe; Schüpbach, Beatrice; Pfiffner, Lukas; Walter, Th..
Determining explanatory environmental factors that lead to patterns of biodiversity in cultivated landscapes is an important step for the assessment of the impact of landscape changes. In the context of an assessment of the effect of agricultural national extensification programme on biodiversity, field data of 2 regions were collected according to a stratified sampling method. A distribution model of 3 indicator species taxa (butterflies, spiders, and carabid beetles) is related to influencing factors by means of multivariate statistics (CCA, partial CCA). Hypothetical influencing factors are categorised as follows: (1) habitat (habitat type, management techniques) and (2) landscape (habitat heterogeneity, variability, diversity, proportion of natural and...

Quantifying the impact of landscape and habitat features on biodiversity in cultivated landscapes Organic Eprints
Jeanneret, Philippe; Schüpbach, Beatrice; Luka, Henryk.
Determining habitat and landscape features that lead to patterns of biodiversity in cultivated landscapes is an important step for the assessment of the impact of extensification programmes in agriculture. In the context of an assessment of the effect of national extensification programme on biodiversity in agriculture, field data of three regions (7 km2 each) were collected according to a stratified sampling method. A distribution model of three taxa (spiders, carabid beetles, and butterflies) is related to influencing factors by means of multivariate statistics (canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), partial CCA). Hypothetical influencing factors are categorised as follows: (1) habitat (habitat type, plant species richness) and (2) landscape (habitat...
