SeaDataNet II data products: the North Atlantic Ocean Region 5
Coatanoan, Christine; Simoncelli, Simona; Schlitzer, Reiner; Fichaut, Michele; Schaap, Dick; Iona, Sissy.
During the SeaDataNet II (SDN) EU-project, a quality control (QC) strategy has been implemented and continuously reviewed aiming at improving the quality of the global dataset and creating the best products. This strategy has been developed in collaboration with MyOcean In-Situ Thematic Assemble Centre (INS-TAC) at regional levels to serve operational and scientific oceanography communities. Temperature and salinity historical data collections were created by sea basins, as aggregated datasets and climatology products, and covering the time period 1900-2013. Those ODV qualified dataset collections are available through the SDN web catalog at http://sextant.ifremer.fr/en/web/seadatanet/. The presentation highlight the quality control strategy processed for...

Marine data are needed for many purposes: for acquiring a better scientific understanding of the marine environment, but also, increasingly, as marine knowledge for decision making as well as developing products and services supporting economic growth. Data must be of sufficient quality to meet the specific users' needs. It must also be accessible in a timely manner. And yet, despite being critical, this timely access to known-quality data proves challenging. Europe's marine data have traditionally been collected by a myriad of entities with the result that much of our data are scattered throughout unconnected databases and repositories. Even when data are available, they are often not compatible, making the sharing of the information and data aggregation...

The SeaDataNet data products: regional temperature and salinity historical data collections 5
Simoncelli, Simona; Coatanoan, Christine; Back, Orjan; Sagen, Helge; Scory, Serge; Myroshnychenko, Volodymyr; Schaap, Dick; Schlitzer, Reiner; Iona, Sissy; Fichaut, Michele.
Temperature and Salinity (TS) historical data collections covering the time period 1900-2013 were created for each European marginal sea (Arctic Sea, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, North Sea, North Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea) within the framework of SeaDataNet2 (SDN) EU-Project and are available as ODV collections trough the SeaDataNet web catalog at http://sextant.ifremer.fr/en/web/seadatanet/. Two versions have been published and they represent a snapshot of the SDN database content at two different times: V1.1 (January 2014) and V2 (March 2015). A Quality Control Strategy (QCS) has been implemented and continuously refined in order to improve the quality of the SDN database content and to create the best product deriving from SDN data. The QCS was...

Well-founded data management systems are of vital importance for ocean observing systems as they ensure that essential data are not only collected but also retained and made accessible for analysis and application by current and future users. Effective data management requires collaboration across activities including observations, metadata and data assembly, quality assurance and control (QA/QC), and data publication that enables local and interoperable discovery and access and secures archiving that guarantees long-term preservation. To achieve this, data should be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR). Here, we outline how these principles apply to ocean data and illustrate them with a few examples. In recent decades, ocean data...

Using SeaDataNet Management System to preserve the XBT Data-Set of the Mediterranean Sea 5
Pecci, Leda; Ciuffardi, Tiziana; Reseghetti, Franco; Fichaut, Michele; Picco, Paola; Schaap, Dick.
significant amount of Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) data has been collected in the Mediterranean Sea since 1999 in the framework of operational oceanography activities. The management and storage of such a volume of data poses significant challenges and opportunities. The SeaDataNet project, a pan-European infrastructure for marine data diffusion, provides a convenient way to avoid dispersion of these temperature vertical profiles and to facilitate access to a wider public. The XBT data flow, along with the recent improvements in the quality check procedures and the consistence of the available historical data set are described. The main features of SeaDataNet services and the advantage of using this system for long-term data archiving are presented....

European Marine Observation Data Network - EMODnet Physics 5
Novellino, Antonio; D'Angelo, Paolo; Benedetti, Giacomo; Manzella, Giuseppe; Gorringe, Patrick; Schaap, Dick; Pouliquen, Sylvie; Rickards, Lesley.
The EMODnet - Physics is a Marine Observation and Data Information System that provides a single point of access to near real time and historical achieved data. It is includes systems for physical data from the whole Europe (wave height and period, temperature of the water column, wind speed and direction, salinity of the water column, horizontal velocity of the water column, light attenuation, and sea level) as monitored by fixed stations, ARGO floats, drifting buoys, gliders, and ferry-boxes. It does provide discovering of data sets (both near real time and historical data sets), viewing and free and open downloading of the data from more than 4400 platforms. Moreover, the system provides full interoperability with third-party software through WMS...

SensorML profiles and O&M data models adapted to specific marine observation data. SensorML and O&M expressions for Research Vessels and Fixed Stations. 5
Sorribas, Jordi; Loubrieu, Thomas; Olive, Joan; Casas, Raquel; Schaap, Dick.
SeaDataNet II wants to adopt the OGC standards for Sensor Web Enablement (SWE). This document formulates specific SeaDataNet profiles for the SensorML and Observations & Measurements models that can be applied by operators of operational observation systems to describe in more detail their observations and to provide standardised access to these observations using the SOS service protocol. In practice, the SensorML and O&M metadata will be attached to the core CDI discovery format as extensions, giving users of the SeaDataNet portal more usage information on specific observations and a way for direct access to the related data streams from operational sensor systems, such as real-time Metocean networks and underway data from systems onboard...
