SUPPLY AND DEMAND ISSUES FOR A CONVENIENCE LEARNING COURSE AgEcon
Burton, Robert O., Jr.; Schurle, Bryan W..
This paper explores and analyzes supply and demand of university-level convenience learning courses. Procedures involve use of microeconomic theory to conceptually analyze supply, demand, benefits and costs and a case study comparison of a traditional course to a convenience learning course that has been offered for three years.

KANSAS WHEAT YIELD RISK MEASURES AND AGGREGATION: A META- ANALYSIS APPROACH AgEcon
Marra, Michele C.; Schurle, Bryan W..
A meta-analysis approach to prediction of farm level yield risk from county level yield series is applied to Kansas wheat yields. A nonlinear relationship between county level and farm level yield risk is found, which indicates that yield risk increases at an increasing rate as the number of acres in the risk measure decreases. County level yield variability should be adjusted upward by approximately .1% for each percent difference in county acreage and average farm acreage within the county. The meta-analysis approach is shown to be promising for the prediction of farm level yield risk when farm level information is difficult to obtain.

Impact of Changes in U.S. Grain Standards on Discounts for Insects in Stored Grain AgEcon
Fleming, Ronald A.; Schurle, Bryan W.; Duncan, Steven S.; Reed, Carl.
The Federal Grain Inspection Service changed U.S. grain standards in 1988. Insect discounts given at country elevators and at terminal elevators were analyzed to determine impacts of the new standards. Insect discounts influence grain quality by affecting insect control decisions by producers and country elevator managers.

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS CURRICULA AgEcon
Schurle, Bryan W.; Comer, Dorothy A..
The potential use of computers and electronic technology have created considerable interest among educators in agricultural economics. This paper provides an overview of the use of electronic technology within agricultural economics curricula; examines areas in which technological development offers promise and examines issues associated with adoption of the technology.

A NONPARAMETRIC EFFICIENCY ANALYSIS FOR A SAMPLE OF KANSAS SWINE OPERATIONS AgEcon
Rowland, William W.; Langemeier, Michael R.; Schurle, Bryan W.; Featherstone, Allen M..
This study evaluates the economic competitiveness of a sample of Kansas farrow-to-finish operations by estimating relative firm efficiency using nonparametric mathematical programming techniques. Measures of technical, allocative, scale, economic, and overall efficiency are then related to farm characteristics to identify sources of efficiency. Results indicate that overall efficient farms produce a high quantity of pork per litter, produce a portion of their own feed grains, generate a large portion of their income from swine and other livestock enterprises, and have a lower debt-to-asset ratio.

Impacts of Policy Changes on Discounts for Insects in Farm-Stored Wheat AgEcon
Schurle, Bryan W.; Duncan, Steven S.; Reed, Carl; Worman, Fred; Pedersen, John.
New grading standards became effective in 1988 to encourage improved grain quality. This paper reports the results of two surveys designed to identify changes in discounting policies and a comparison of discount data collected in 1986 to data collected in 1991. Evidence indicates increases in discounts and improved management practices.

FACTORS INFLUENCING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ADPOTION: A CROSS-SECTIONAL ANALYSIS AgEcon
Stroade, Jeri L.; Schurle, Bryan W..
This project will explore information technology adoption issues. The unique characteristics of information technology will be discussed. Advantages and disadvantages to adoption will also be identified. Finally, a statistical model of Internet adoption will be developed to estimate the impacts of certain variables on the underlying process of information technology adoption.

DETERMINANTS OF KANSAS FARMERS' PARTICIPATION IN ON-FARM RESEARCH AgEcon
Goodwin, Barry K.; Schurle, Bryan W.; Norman, David W.; Freyenberger, S.G.; Bloomquist, L.E.; Regehr, D.L..
On-farm research (OFR) has increased in popularity in the U.S. in recent years due to heightened interest in sustainability issues, the likely decline in resources available for agricultural research, and increasing pressures for accountability and responsiveness to state and local needs. Information relating to OFR was obtained from 431 commercial Kansas farmers. Data were analyzed to determine the degree of OFR being implemented, and three models were estimated to identify which farmer/farm characteristics influenced its implementation. The results indicate that OFR is commonly implemented, and that several farm/farmer characteristics are related to the degree of OFR initiated. It is proposed that to maximize the return from externally initiated OFR,...

CLEARANCE SALES IN THE FARMLAND MARKET? AgEcon
Featherstone, Allen M.; Schurle, Bryan W.; Duncan, Steven S.; Postier, Kevin D..
The ultimate loss financial institutions bear for foreclosed loans is determined by their success in liquidating their acquired property portfolios. This study examines the price received for land sold by private individuals and financial institutions from 1977 through 1990. After adjusting for quality differences, financial institutions received on average 9.2% less than private individuals. Further analysis reveals that commercial banks received a discount of 5.8%, the Farm Credit System (FCS) a 9.2% discount, and Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) a 14.7% discount. For this sample of 13,375 Kansas sales, it is estimated that the sum of the transfers from financial institutions to land buyers amounted to $9.2 million.
