This study revisits the consistent aggregation (over households) property of almost ideal demand system (AIDS) models and presents a method to explicitly account for expenditure aggregation bias when estimating the aggregate AIDS model with time-series data. Ignoring aggregation bias can lead to biased and inconsistent parameter estimates and can cause aggregate demand functions to be inconsistent with the demand functions at the individual household level. IMPACTS OF SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES ON THE IMPLICIT VALUES OF BREAKFAST CEREAL CHARACTERISTICS AgEcon

The implicit values of nutrient and nonnutrient characteristics of breakfast cereal were estimated using the 1987-88 household portion of the USDA’'s Nationwide Food Consumption Survey data. The effects of sociodemographic variables on cereal characteristic values were also estimated. The conceptual framework of the hedonic price model, used for food products, has traditionally focused on the nutritional characteristics of these products. This framework was extended to incorporate nonnutritional characteristics. Findings indicate that consumers'’ sociodemographic characteristics significantly affect the implicit values of both nutritional and nonnutritional cereal characteristics. Results generally met with prior expectations.

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS AFFECTING CONSUMERS' FRESH BEEF CUT PURCHASING DECISIONS IN THE UNITED STATES, JAPAN, AND AUSTRALIA AgEcon

The effects of product and economic characteristics on consumers who purchase six cuts of fresh beef (blocks/parts, steak, thinly sliced, diced, chopped, and ground) in urban areas of the United States, Japan, and Australia will be examined in this paper. Certain product characteristics (such as product freshness and display case cleanliness) were important to consumers of beef in all three countries while other product characteristics (such as price considerations for ground beef consumers) were important for consumers of different beef cuts in all three countries. Some product characteristics varied in importance across consumers from different countries and consumers of different beef cuts.

AGGREGATE FOOD DEMAND ANALYSIS FOR A TRANSITIONAL ECONOMY: AN APPLICATION TO CHINESE HOUSEHOLD EXPENDITURE DATA AgEcon

An analytical framework to assess the effects of changing income and socio-demographic distributions on aggregate food demand functions in transitional economies is presented. Ignoring such distributional effects can lead to biased estimates of aggregate demand elasticities. The proposed method is applied to Chinese urban household expenditure survey data. The results indicate that the drastic distributional changes that have occurred in China have had notable effects on estimated demand elasticities for both food and non-food commodity groups.
