Bevar naturens egen regulering Organic Eprints
Meyling, Nicolai V.; Sigsgaard, Lene.

Softpest Multitrap. Management of strawberry blossom weevil and European tarnished plant bug in organic strawberry and raspberry using semiochemical traps Organic Eprints
Wibe, Atle; Apenite, I; Baroffio, Catherine; Borg-Karlson, Anna-Karin; Cross, J; Sigsgaard, Lene.
The strawberry blossom weevil (Anthonomus rubi) and the European tarnished plant bug (Lygus rugulipennis) cause large (10 - >80%) losses in yield and quality in organically grown strawberry. A consortium with 6 European countries has been created to work on the management of those pests. The pheromones of A. rubi and L. rugulipennis have been characterized in England by NRI/EMR. For the attraction of A. rubi the importance of host plant volatiles in combination with the pheromones has also been documented. The natural semiochemical mechanisms of sexual attraction and host plant finding of A. rubi and L. rugulipennis will be further studied and exploited to develop effective semiochemical traps for their management through mass trapping. Attractive...

Organic fruit growers often suffer economic losses due to insect damages. The available natural pest control products are not always effective; and most important: many organic fruit growers would prefer not to use any pesticide at all. Growing flowers in order to gain more natural enemies, and hence less pests is a technique called Functional Agro-Biodiversity (FAB). Ongoing research in this CORE Organic Plus project aims to collect existing knowledge and generate new knowledge in order to use FAB successfully in orchards.

Using semiochemical traps to study the occurrence of strawberry blossom weevil in strawberry and raspberry – what did we learn? Organic Eprints
Trandem, Nina; Baroffio, Catherine; Fountain, Michelle; Ralle, Baiba; Rendina, Paolo; Richoz, Pauline; Sigsgaard, Lene; Borg-Karlson, Anna-Karin; Hall, David; Cross, Jerry; Wibe, Atle.
This study has improved our understanding of the phenology of the three species, which is of key importance to determine the timing and positioning of traps. Lure duration is one of the bottlenecks in designing commercially viable insect traps for monitoring or mass trapping. Our results emphasize that traps intended for more than one species and region either need long-lasting lures to cover all possibilities, or detailed knowledge about local conditions (e.g. prevalence of pest and surrounding host plant species etc.) to apply lures at the right time

Semiochemical-based pest insect management in strawberry and raspberry Organic Eprints
Wibe, Atle; Baroffio, Catherine; Borg-Karlson, Anna-Karin; Cross, Jerry; Fountain, Michelle; Hall, David; Mozuraitis, Raimondas; Ralle, Baiba; Sigsgaard, Lene; Trandem, Nina.
Introduction: For many insect species, pheromones and host plant volatiles are of major importance in mate finding and host plant location. Therefore, there is potential for using these interactions to develop new strategies and effective control measures. The strawberry blossom weevil (Anthonomus rubi), the European tarnished plant bug (Lygus rugulipennis) and the raspberry beetle (Byturus tomentosus) cause large losses (10->80%) in both conventional and organic strawberry and raspberry production. We investigated whether the natural semiochemical mechanisms of these key pests can be exploited to develop effective traps for their management through mass trapping. Methods: Attractive traps and lures with host plant volatiles and pheromones were...

Traps for Lygus rugulipennis and Anthonomus rubi: preliminary results from Softpest Multitrap activities in Latvia Organic Eprints
Ralle, Baiba; Cross, Jerry; Borg-Karlson, Anna-Karin; Hall, David; Trandem, Nina; Sigsgaard, Lene; Baroffio, Catherine; Fountain, Michelle; Wibe, Atle.
There is a lack of appropriate plant protection methods against strawberry blossom weevil (SBW) not only in organic plantations, but also in plantations, where IPM is used. European tarnished plant bug (ETPB) is not currently recognized as a pest in Latvian strawberry plantations, because the visual defects made by bugs are not important for Latvian consumers. Cross vane bucket traps and sticky stake traps were the most effective for trapping SBW in Latvia. These traps, where the lure was positioned at the top of cross vanes, were also the most effective for capturing ETPB.

Innovative design and management to boost functional biodiversity of organic orchards : the ECOORCHARD project Organic Eprints
Warlop, Francois; Penvern, Servane; Weibel, Franco; Herz, Annette; Porcel, Mario; Tchamitchian, Marc; Sigsgaard, Lene.
Orchards are perennial cultures, and, especially in organic fruit production it is essential to design and manage orchards in a way which favours beneficials such as insect predators and parasitoids over pests and diseases. As landscape-dominating crops their management affects overall biodiversity in the agricultural landscape. Increasing plant biodiversity and habitats in such a way that beneficials are favoured is called Functional Agro-Biodiversity (FAB). The value of FAB for reducing pesticide use in fruit production is generally acknowledged, and many growers try to increase it. However, they lack situation-specific information about how to drive and assess biodiversity to optimize FAB. ECOORCHARD is therefore combining several approaches: (i)...

SOFTPEST MULTITRAP - MANAGEMENT OF STRAWBERRY BLOSSOM WEEVIL AND EUROPEAN TARNISHED PLANT BUG IN ORGANIC STRAWBERRY AND RASPBERRY USING SEMIOCHEMICAL TRAPS Organic Eprints
Wibe, Atle; Cross, Jerry V.; Borg-Karlson, Anna-Karin; Hall, David R.; Trandem, Nina; Sigsgaard, Lene; Baroffio, Catherine; Ralle, Baiba; Fountain, Michelle T..
Many growers of organic strawberry and raspberry have large losses in yield and reduced quality of their products because of insect damage. For many insects species pheromones and host plant volatiles are of major importance in mate finding and host plant location. In this project we want to extend our knowledge of these systems to develop effective control measures to control these pests in organic crops. The focus will be on the strawberry blossom weevil, the European tarnish plant bug and the raspberry beetle.

Das Projekt EcoOrchard: Förderung der funktionellen Agro- Biodiversität im Ökologischen Obstbau Organic Eprints
Matray, Silvia; Herz, Annette; Pfiffner, Lukas; Sigsgaard, Lene.
Research institutes and universities of nine European countries are involved in the research project EcoOrchard to develop appropriate strategies to promote functional agro-biodiversity in organic pome fruit production. Therefore field trials have been laid out at different sites in seven member states in 2015, where flower strips were sown into the inter-rows of the orchards. Natural antagonists like Syrphidae, Coccinelidae and parasitoids of codling moth are supposed to be promoted with these additional floral ressources. Besides faunal and floristic studies, practical methods and indicators have been worked out to monitor functional biodiversity.

This report is the result of a network project which was established to discuss the potential for collaboration on development of systemic approaches to pest management without pesticides between Chinese and Danish researchers. The focus is on systemic approaches rather than input substitution of synthetic chemicals with agents of natural origin, however, the latter is considered as an integrated tool for the development and design of systemic approaches. The discussions were, furthermore, limited to management of invertebrate pests as well as diseases, while other pests such as weeds have not been included in the discussions. The discussions took place at two workshops and were based on presentations of research from the two countries and field visits in...
