Ileal digestibility of amino acids in novel organic protein feedstuffs for pigs: Black soldier fly larvae meal(Hermetia illucens) Organic Eprints
Kortelainen, Tiina; Siljander-Rasi, Hilkka; Tuori, Mikko; Partanen, Kirsi.
Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the standardised ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids in organically produced black soldier fly larvae (Hermeti illucens) meal in growing piglets. The use of Hermetia meal in pig feeding is not allowed for the time being, but feed legislation in the EU concerning the use of Hermetia meal for pigs is in progress. Two batches of Hermetia meal arrived from Switzerland (FiBL Research Institute of Organic Agriculture). In batch 1, fat was extracted by mechanical extraction and in batch 2 hexane ex-traction was used. The experiment was carried out with a total of 40 growing piglets, 17 gilts and 23 barrows, with the initial body weight of ca. 17 kg. The piglets were distributed in experimen-tal groups...

Feeding of sows with organic diets containing peas or faba beans during gestation and lactation Organic Eprints
Kyntäjä, Soile; Siljander-Rasi, Hilkka; Voutila, Liisa; Partanen, Kirsi.
The objective of this study was to examine the influence of pea and faba beans in the organic feeding of gilts and sows and phasing the lactation and gestation feeding on pregnant and lactating sows. The lactation feeding was phased by giving the sows more protein (rape seed expeller) at the last half of lactation (from 3 weeks lactation to weaning). The feeding of gestation was phased by replacing a part of the gestation feed with lactation feed at the last third of gestation. Experiment was carried out with 84 sows. The experiment was focused on sow feeding during lactation (n=74 sows) as only a small number of the sows (n=23) had results from the gestation period. MTT’s sow unit was closed at the end of 2013. The results from the gestation period...

Faba beans in diets for growing-finishing pigs Organic Eprints
Partanen, Kirsi; Alaviuhkola, Timo; Siljander-Rasi, Hilkka; Suomi, Kaija.
Two experiments were carried out to study the effects of using the new faba bean (Vicia faba L.) cultivar Kontu as a domestic protein source for growing-finishing pigs.In Experiment 1,120 pigs were used with a body weight (BW)of 25–110 kg to study the effects of replacing 0, 25, 50, 75,and 100%of rapeseed meal with faba beans in barley +rapeseed meal based diets. Restrictedly fed grower and finisher diets contained 137–317 and 114–260 g kg–1 faba beans, respectively. A barley +soya bean meal based diet was included as a control. The replacement of rapeseed meal with faba beans exerted a quadratic effect on daily weight gain and on the feed conversion ratio of pigs in the growing period and during total fattening (P <0.05).The growth rate of growing pigs...

Tables of composition and nutritional values of organically produced feed materials for pigs and poultry Organic Eprints
Kyntäjä, Soile; Partanen, Kirsi; Siljander-Rasi, Hilkka; Jalava, Taina.
Organically produced cereals, legumes, oil seed products, forages, silages and new protein feedstuffs were analysed for nutrient composition. In this report, new high quality, protein rich feedstuffs included microalgae, insects and mussel meal. Protein feedstuffs also contained samples from less known plant feed materials for pigs and poultry, such as sainfoin seeds with hulls or dehulled, grass pea seeds and soybean by-product okara. Feed samples were analysed for dry matter, ash, crude protein, ether extract, crude fibre, neutral and acid detergent fibre, lignin, starch, sugars, amino acids, minerals, phytic acid, phytase activity and in vitro digestibilities according to Boisen and Fernàndez (1995, 1997) to predict the standardised ileal digestibility...

Feeding value of red clover-grass, Persian clover and common vetch for pigs Organic Eprints
Partanen, Kirsi; Valaja, Jarmo; Siljander-Rasi, Hilkka.
Red clover-grass, Persian clover, and common fetch that are generally grown for green manuring in organic cropping cycles, are also valuable forages for the feeding of pigs. They could substitute up to 30% of concentrates (on dry matter basis) in the feeding of growing pigs without negative impact on nitrogen (N) retention. This indicates that protein and amino acids of these legumes are well digested and utilised by the pigs. However, inclusion of roughage to pig diets shifts N utilisation so that N excretion to faeces is increased while N excretion to urine is decreased. Persian clover, in particular, is an intriguing roughage for pigs as its protein contains more amino acids that that of red clover-grass or common vetch. In addition, the digestibility...

Feeding weaned piglets and growing-finishing pigs with diets based on mainly home-grown organic feedstuffs Organic Eprints
Partanen, Kirsi; Siljander-Rasi, Hilkka; Alaviuhkola, Timo.
In 2000, EU regulations for organic animal production set new guidelines for organic pig feeding requiring that this be based on mainly home-grown organic feedstuffs. Doubts were however raised whether these feeding regimes can maintain good growth performance and carcass quality of pigs. Three experiments were carried out to study different organic feeding regimes in weaned piglets and fattening pigs. In Experiment 1, we evaluated the use of peas and faba beans (0, 120, or 240 g kg-1) in diets for weaned piglets. Piglets fed pea diets performed as well as those fed the control diet, whereas the highest faba bean level resulted in reduced feed intake and growth performance. In Experiment 2, we studied the replacement (0, 33, or 67%) of rapeseed cake with...
