Mapping of the continuous epitopes displayed on the Clostridium perfringens type D epsilon-toxin BJM
Alves,Guilherme Guerra; Machado-de-Ávila,Ricardo Andrez; Chávez-Olórtegui,Carlos Delfin; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
Abstract The epsilon toxin, produced by Clostridium perfringens, is responsible for enterotoxemia in ruminants and is a potential bioterrorism agent. In the present study, 15 regions of the toxin were recognized by antibodies present in the serum, with different immunodominance scales, and may be antigen determinants that can be used to formulate subunit vaccines.

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Clostridium perfringens isolated from piglets with or without diarrhea in Brazil BJM
Salvarani,Felipe Masiero; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Pires,Prhiscylla Sadanã; Cruz Júnior,Eduardo Coulaud da Costa; Albefaro,Isabella Silva; Guedes,Roberto Maurício de Carvalho; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined for 13 antibiotics against Clostridium perfringens isolated from Brazilian piglets. The collection of isolates was performed in June to October 2010. All isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin and ceftiofur, whereas most were resistant to tetracycline and lincomycin. Avilamycin and narasin were more effective against isolates from non-diarrheic than from diarrheic piglets. The other antimicrobials were less active in need of high concentrations to inhibit the growth of the C. perfringens type A. These results suggest the need for further studies evaluating molecular factors related to the antimicrobial resistance of C. perfringens.

Salmonella Typhimurium - associated meningoencephalomyelitis in a foal Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Jéssica Guerra de; Ramos,Carolina Pantuzza; Rocha,Izabela de Assis; Marcelino,Sóstenes Apolo Correia; Pierezan,Felipe; Palhares,Maristela Silveira; Maranhão,Renata de Pino Albuquerque; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Teixeira,Raffaella Bertoni Cavalcanti.
ABSTRACT: A 10-day old foal presented with a history of acute recumbency and generalized weakness, that progressed to seizure episodes and death. Post mortem examination revealed necrotizing and purulent omphalophlebitis and fibrinopurulent meningoencephalomyelitis. Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated from the central nervous system and determined to be the cause of the meningoencephalomyelitis. Due to the lack of evidence of gastrointestinal disease, the umbilical cord was considered the most likely portal of entry of the bacteria. The isolated S. Typhimurium was resistant to ampicillin and cephalotin, and partially resistant to enrofloxacin. These drugs are commonly used in the treatment of salmonellosis. This is the first report of S. Typhimurium...

Clostridium perfringens: a review of the disease in pigs, horses and broiler chickens Ciência Rural
Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Oliveira Junior,Carlos Augusto; Guedes,Roberto Maurício Carvalho; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
Clostridium perfringens is a gram-positive, anaerobic, fermentative, spore-forming bacillus that may be found in the environment but is more commonly found as part of the microbiota of humans and animals. The bacterium is considered a common enteric pathogen; however, the pathogenesis and predisposing factors of the disease can differ among species. Therefore, specific studies are necessary for understanding the role of this pathogen, how to diagnose it and which control measures are applicable. The aim of this paper is to review the current knowledge regarding C. perfringens infections in pigs, horses and broiler chickens

Botulism in ruminants in Brazil Ciência Rural
Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Oliveira Junior,Carlos Augusto; Gonçalves,Luciana Aramuni; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
ABSTRACT: Botulism is an intoxication caused by the ingestion of neurotoxins secreted by Clostridium botulinum. It affects all warm-blooded animals and some fishes and is characterized by progressive flaccid symmetrical paralysis. Despite the known importance of this disease in ruminants, the Brazilian literature only includes case studies and outbreak descriptions. In addition, the epidemiology of botulism in cattle has markedly changed over the past two decades. The aim of this study is to review these characteristics and to provide recent data on the occurrence of botulism in ruminants in Brazil.

Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Moreira,Felipe Moraghi; Rezende,Jackeline Viana; Pires,Prhiscylla Sadanã; Maranhão,Renata de Pino Albuquerque; Palhares,Maristela Silveira; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
Despite of the substantial role of Clostridium difficile in causing diarrhea and colitis in foals, there have been no confirmed diagnoses of disease caused by this bacteria in Brazil. In this paper, we describe confirmed cases of colitis caused by C. difficile in two foals in Brazil. Two five-month-old foals with a five-day history of diarrhea after antibiotic treatment for a respiratory disease were treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. C. difficile A/B toxins were detected, and toxigenic strains of C. difficile were isolated from the foals' feces. The treatment was based on fluid therapy and antibiotics (metronidazole and ceftiofur), and the animals experienced a gradual recovery. The association between the...

Santana,Jordana Almeida; Ferreira,Ana Carolina de Andrade; Souza,Marina de Castro Campos de; Moreira,Maria Aparecida Scatamburlo; Lima,Magna Coroa; Cruz,Diogo Soares Gonçalves; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira.
ABSTRACT: Despite the known importance of Clostridium perfringens as an enteropathogen in small ruminants, little is known about the role of its additional virulence factors or the frequency of the various C. perfringens genotypes in healthy goats; this complicates the laboratory diagnosis of the infections caused by this microorganism. In light of this, the aim of the present study was to isolate and genotype C. perfringens from stool samples from healthy goats in Brazil. Stool samples from 250 apparently healthy adult goats from 17 different herds in Minas Gerais, Brazil were collected, and isolation and genotyping of C. perfringens was performed. C. perfringens type A was isolated from 189 (75.6%) goats, whereas C. perfringens types C and D were each...

Clostridium difficile infection: main features and occurrence in domestic species in Brazil Ciência Rural
Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Guedes,Roberto Maurício de Carvalho; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
Clostridium difficile is an emerging enteropathogen of humans and domestic animals. The bacterium was recently confirmed to be present in foals and dogs in Brazil, with some recent studies suggesting that C. difficile is one of the most important causes of piglet diarrhea in the country. Moreover, some reports also suggest the transmission of this microorganism between animals and humans, raising the possibility that C. difficile is a zoonotic disease. Therefore, the aim of the present review is to describe the main features of C. difficile infection in domestic animals and outline the occurrence of the disease in horses, dogs and pigs in Brazil.

Synovial fluid as an auxiliary diagnostic tool for different stages of canine visceral leishmaniasis Ciência Rural
Rennó,Mário César; Vasconcellos,Amanda Otoni; Santos,Rogerio Rodrigues; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Carneiro,Rubens Antônio; Paes,Paulo Ricardo de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT: Leishmaniasis represents a complex of chronic diseases with a broad geographic distribution and a high significance in public health worldwide. The varied clinical signs in conjunction with the low sensitivity and specificity of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) detection methods make diagnosis of the disease complex. Among the several available laboratory tests, studies have suggested that the detection of parasites in synovial fluid (SF) is a good auxiliary tool in the diagnosis of CVL. However, no study has evaluated the influence of the clinical stage of CVL in the detection of Leishmania sp. in SF. This study aimed to evaluate the detection of Leishmania sp. amastigotes in the SF of dogs at different stages of the disease. The negative...
