Tropical soils characterization at low cost and time using portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (pXRF): Effects of different sample preparation methods Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Silva,Elen Alvarenga; Poggere,Giovana Clarice; Guilherme,Luiz Roberto Guimarães; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (pXRF) has been recently adopted by the Soil Science community for uses in both field and laboratory, obtaining the total content of several chemical elements in a few seconds. Sulfuric acid digestion is an expensive and time-consuming laboratory analysis that provides contents of Fe2O3, Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2 and P2O5, important for soil studies. Due to few pXRF studies in tropical soils, this work aimed to compare contents of Fe2O3, Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2 and P2O5 obtained by pXRF with sulfuric acid digestion results, and to evaluate the effects of varying forms of preparing soil samples and scanning with pXRF on the resulting values in Brazilian soils. Soils were scanned in five conditions in-field (in situ) and...

Digital soil mapping approach based on fuzzy logic and field expert knowledge Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
In Brazil, soil surveys in more detailed scale are still scarce and necessary to more adequately support the decision makers for planning soil and environment activities in small areas. Hence, this review addresses some digital soil mapping techniques that enable faster production of soil surveys, beyond fitting continuous spatial distribution of soil properties into discrete soil categories, in accordance with the inherent complexity of soil variation, increasing the accuracy of spatial information. The technique focused here is knowledge-based in expert systems, under fuzzy logic and vector of similarity. For that, a contextualization of each tool in the soil types and properties prediction is provided, as well as some options of knowledge extraction...

Correcting field determination of elemental contents in soils via portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Dijair,Thaís Santos Branco; Silva,Fernanda Magno; Teixeira,Anita Fernanda dos Santos; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Guilherme,Luiz Roberto Guimarães; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry has been useful worldwide for determining soil elemental content under both field and laboratory conditions. However, the field results are influenced by several factors, including soil moisture (M), soil texture (T) and soil organic matter (SOM). Thus, the objective of this work was to create linear mathematical models for conversion of Al2O3, CaO, Fe, K2O, SiO2, V, Ti and Zr contents obtained by pXRF directly in field to those obtained under laboratory conditions, i.e., in air-dried fine earth (ADFE), using M, T and SOM as auxiliary variables, since they influence pXRF results. pXRF analyses in field were performed on 12 soil profiles with different parent materials. From them, 59 samples were...

Xanthic- and Rhodic-Acrudoxes under cerrado vegetation: differential internal drainage and covarying micromorphological properties Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Skorupa,Alba Lucia Araujo; Tassinari,Diego; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Poggere,Giovana Clarice; Zinn,Yuri Lopes; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Soil internal drainage plays a major role in soil genesis, and it is mostly dependent on topography. However, the existence of sedimentary and meta-sedimentary rock strata with variable dip angle allows for strong differences in internal drainage for identical topographies, which result in a marked differentiation in the properties of overlain soils. This work aimed to investigate the micromorphology of soils formed from different dip angles of rock strata and their relationships to internal drainage, in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Over horizontal strata, a Xanthic Acrudox lacking hematite and with blocky structure has developed. Over strata with 45° dip angle, strong drainage has resulted in intense desilication, forming a Rhodic Acrudox having...

Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) applications in tropical Soil Science Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ribeiro,Bruno Teixeira; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Silva,Elen Alvarenga; Guilherme,Luiz Roberto Guimarães.
ABSTRACT The X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is an analytical technique for determination of elemental composition of different materials. In soils, the XRF has many pedological, environmental and agronomic applications, mainly after the emergence of portable equipments (pXRF). This technique has been recently adopted and successfully used for soil characterization worldwide, but very rare works have been carried out in soils of developing countries. The soil characterization includes the complete elemental composition determination (nutrients, trace and rare-earth elements) and allows estimating some soil physical and chemical properties. In Brazil, this technique is still incipient, mainly the use of pXRF, however, it can greatly contribute to soil...

Spatial prediction of soil properties in two contrasting physiographic regions in Brazil Scientia Agricola
Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT This study compared the performance of ordinary kriging (OK) and regression kriging (RK) to predict soil physical-chemical properties in topsoil (0-15 cm). Mean prediction of error and root mean square of prediction error were used to assess the prediction methods. Two watersheds with contrasting soil-landscape features were studied, for which the prediction methods were performed differently. A multiple linear stepwise regression model was performed with RK using digital terrain models (DTMs) and remote sensing images in order to choose the best auxiliary covariates. Different pedogenic factors and land uses control soil property distributions in each watershed, and soil properties often display contrasting scales of variability. Environmental...
