Several large-scale climate patterns influenced climate conditions and weather patterns across the globe during 2010. The transition from a warm El Nino phase at the beginning of the year to a cool La Nina phase by July contributed to many notable events, ranging from record wetness across much of Australia to historically low Eastern Pacific basin and near-record high North Atlantic basin hurricane activity. The remaining five main hurricane basins experienced below-to well-below-normal tropical cyclone activity. The negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation was a major driver of Northern Hemisphere temperature patterns during 2009/10 winter and again in late 2010. It contributed to record snowfall and unusually low temperatures over much of northern...

Ecological Restoration in the Deep Sea: Desiderata ArchiMer
Van Dover, C. L.; Aronson, J.; Pendleton, L.; Smith, S.; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Moreno-mateos, D.; Barbier, E.; Billett, D.; Bowers, K.; Danovaro, R.; Edwards, A.; Kellert, S.; Morato, T.; Pollard, E.; Rogers, A.; Warner, R..
An era of expanding deep-ocean industrialization is before us, with policy makers establishing governance frameworks for sustainable management of deep-sea resources while scientists learn more about the ecological structure and functioning of the largest biome on the planet. Missing from discussion of the stewardship of the deep ocean is ecological restoration. If existing activities in the deep sea continue or are expanded and new deep-ocean industries are developed, there is need to consider what is required to minimize or repair resulting damages to the deep-sea environment. In addition, thought should be given as to how any past damage can be rectified. This paper develops the discourse on deep-sea restoration and offers guidance on planning and...

Whole genome de novo sequencing of quail and grey partridge Organic Eprints
Holm, Lars-Erik; Panitz, Frank; Burt, D.; Talbot , R.; Smith, S.; Andersen, Liselotte Wesley; Bendixen, Christian.
Sufficient sequence data to initiate genome sequencing of quail and grey partridge has been obtained. The difference in assembly quality between species is a consequence of the difference in length of the sequence reads (54 cycles versus 101 cycles). Additional data will be required before sequence assembly are being performed. Specifically longer sequence reads (especially in quail) will be necessary to generate assemblies of a reasonable quality.

Whole genome de novo sequencing of common quail and grey partridge Organic Eprints
Holm, Lars-Erik; Panitz, Frank; Bendixen, Christian; Talbot , R.; Smith, S.; Andersen, Liselotte Wesley; Burt, D..
The development of next-generation sequencing technologies enables rapid generation of large amounts of genome sequences. Next-generation sequencing was utilised to perform whole genome sequencing of two Phasianidae, common quail (Coturnix coturnix) and grey partridge (Perdix perdix). Sequence data corresponding to 8 to 9 fold coverage of the genomes of the two species were obtained. The amount of sequence data enabled generation of a rough de novo genome assembly suitable for either the identification of the sequence of specific genes or for use in comparative studies with other birds, such as chicken and turkey. Likewise, it was possible to identify numerous SNPs and microsatellites for use in other studies.
