Estructura de la comunidad epifaunal asociada a colonias de vida libre del Hidrocoral Millepora alcicornis Linnaeus 1758 en Bahía Portete, Caribe colombiano OceanDocs
Castro S., C.; Monroy L., M.; Solano, O.D..
The epifaunal community associated with free-living colonies of Millepora alcicornis, the dominant coral species in Portete Bay, was characterized from twenty living colonies randomly collected within a shallow Thalassia testudinum seabed. The three-dimensional growth colonies sheltered 15 families, 15 genera and 18 mobile invertebrate species. The 97% of individuals was represented by decapods crustaceans specially adapted as to live in association with the host. Within them, the porcelanid Petrolisthes armatus, representing 79% of the epifauna (961 individuals), was exclusively found in a juvenile stage suggesting that M. alcicornis is mainly used by this species as a nursery zone. The epifaunal composition is partially related to coral living tissue...

Ophiothrix synoecina (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea: Ophiotrichidae): especie endémica y vulnerable del Caribe colombiano OceanDocs
Monroy-López, M.; Solano, O.D..
The presence of Ophiothrix synoecina Schoppe in the Guajira area (Cabo de la Vela), and the contribution of new information about its distribution and density, allowed the reevaluation of the category proposed on the Marine Invertebrates Red List, because of its small and fragmentary area of nine localities through the Colombian Caribbean rocky-shore.

Comunidad macroinfaunal de fondos blandos someros tropicales (Caribe colombiano) OceanDocs
Guzmán-Alvis, A.I.; Solano, O.D.; Córdoba-Tejada, M.E.; López-R., A.C..
With the aim to characterize tthe soft-bottom macrofauna and its spatial and temporal distribution patterns in the Santa Marta area, a two years sampling program was performed at depths between 7 to 60 m. Density, biomass and diversity of the community were determined. The BIOENV method was applied in order to relate the distribution of the associations and the environmental variables (depth, turbidity, organic matter, organic carbon, organic nitrogen, organic phosphorus and median particle diameter). A density of 1499 indiv *m-2 and 10.9 g*m-2 wet biomass were obtained. The collected organisms belonged to six taxa: polychaetes, crustaceans, sipunculids, molluscs, bryozoans, and echinoderms; the first one was the most important in terms of abundance and...

A new species of fish of the genus Stellifer (Perciformes: Sciaenidae) from the South Caribbean Sea OceanDocs
Aguilera, O.; Solano, O.D.; Valdez, J..

Community analysis of the soft bottom megafauna (Crustacea, Mollusca) from the southeastern region of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean OceanDocs
Arango, C.P.; Solano, O.D..
Soft bottom megabenthic communities have been poorly studied in the Caribbean Sea. In this study we describe the structure and species composition of a Crustacea-Mollusca megafaunal community based on beam trawl samples taken between 13 and 60 m depth at the southwestern region of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean. Classification and ordination analyses using abundance data of crustaceans and molluscs produced two main groups (A and C), which seem to be controlled by depth and sediment characteristics. Group A consisted of species collected at the deeper stations and high content of silts (between 30 and 60 m depth) and exhibited the highest density and biomass mean values. The decapod Chasmocarcinus cilindricus was found as the characteristic species for...
