ABSTRACT The choice of germplasm is one of the most important phases of a genetic improvement program to the fact that it is the initial development stage of superior hybrids. Hence, the objectives of this study were to obtain the estimates of m+a and d, and inbreeding depression for grain yield and plant height traits, for cultivars lacking this information, and thus to predict the potential of maize hybrids for the extraction of lines. The F1 and F2 generations of 12 maize hybrids were tested at two sites, during the crop years of 2017-18 and 2018-19, accounting for four environments. ABSTRACT: Biomass sorghum is one of the most promising crops for the production of electricity through the burning in high-pressure boilers, due to its high calorific value, high yield, seed propagation, short cycle, and to the possibility of full mechanization of its agricultural processes. However, there is still a lack of information about its cultural practices. To this end, this research aimed to evaluate the influence of row spacing and plant population on the yield performance of biomass sorghum. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar ganhos genéticos obtidos por diferentes índices de seleção aplicados a múltiplos caracteres agronômicos de sorgo-sacarino (Sorghum bicolor). Foram feitas avaliações de 189 progênies F5 e sete testemunhas, em delineamento de blocos incompletos, com três repetições. Mensuraram-se os caracteres produtividade de matéria verde, teor de sólidos solúveis totais, extração de caldo, teor de sacarose no caldo e sólidos solúveis totais por hectare. ABSTRACT: Sorghum breeding programs are based predominantly on developing homozygous lines to produce single cross hybrids, frequently with relatively narrow genetic bases. The adoption of complementary strategies, such as genetic diversity study, enables a broader vision of the genetic structure of the breeding germplasm. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of sorghum breeding lines using structure analysis, principal components (PC) and clustering analyses.
