| The molal concentrations of 34 elements in marine organisms were compared with the availability of these elements in their natural environment and some physico-chemical properties of the elements, viz. the charge/radius ratio or ionic potential and the "noble gas deviation" or NGD-index. The NGD-index is defined in this paper as a value which expresses the deviation of the electron configuration of an element with that of the previous and subsequent noble gas configurations. The value for the NGD-index can be obtained by multiplying the number of electrons which must be lost or gained to obtain the configuration of, respectively, the previous and the subsequent noble gas, divided by their squared sum. The concentration factor (ratio of element... |
