Territorial behaviour in Crested Newt Triturus cristatus and Marbled Newt T. Marmoratus (Amphibia, Urodela) Naturalis
Zuiderwijk, Annie; Sparreboom, Max.
Mating and premating behaviour of the Crested Newt Triturus cristatus and the Marbled Newt T. marmoratus were studied in both the natural habitat and aquaria. Attention is focussed on male interactions. During the breeding period, males occupy open spots on the bottom of a pond defending these against other males. Such defense consists of a series of display movements, usually chasing the visiting male away. The male-male display has been interpreted as territorial behaviour. Territories are usually occupied for a period of one evening or less. Male-male encounters take place more frequently than male-female encounters. The observed behaviour has characteristics of lek-breeding.

On the sexual behaviour of the Italian Newt, Triturus italicus (Caudata: Salamandridae) Naturalis
Giacoma, Cristina; Sparreboom, Max.
The sexual behaviour of the Italian Newt Triturus italicus is characterized by an extended phase of static display. Tail fanning is the predominant movement during this stage. Shortly before creeping, a flicking tail movement is inserted in the display. Occasionally the male retreats in front of the female before turning to the spermatophore transfer phase. This behaviour is comparable to the retreat display of the T. vulgaris-helveticus-montandoni group. The long phase of static display resembles the behaviour of another species, T. boscai. In T. italicus, behaviours like retreat and tail touch by the female appear to be less stereotyped than in the T. vulgaris-helveticus-montandoni group.
