Consistency of the current global ocean observing systems from an Argo perspective ArchiMer

Variations in the world's ocean heat storage and its associated volume changes are a key factor to gauge global warming and to assess the earth's energy and sea level budget. Estimating global ocean heat content (GOHC) and global steric sea level (GSSL) with temperature/salinity data from the Argo network reveals a positive change of 0.5 +/- 0.1 W m(-2) (applied to the surface area of the ocean) and 0.5 +/- 0.1 mm year(-1) during the years 2005 to 2012, averaged between 60 degrees S and 60 degrees N and the 10-1500m depth layer. Natural variability and change of the Earth's climate have significant global societal impacts. With its large heat and carbon capacity and relatively slow dynamics, the ocean plays an integral role in climate, and provides an important source of predictability at seasonal and longer timescales. The exchange of Intermediate Water in the southeast Atlantic: Water mass transformations diagnosed from the Lagrangian analysis of a regional ocean model ArchiMer

Results from a regional ocean model and numerical Lagrangian analyses are compared with in situ measurements to describe the properties and dynamics of Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) in the region of the Cape Basin. The AAIW that originates in the South Atlantic (A-AAIW) at 8 degrees W follows two branches. A southern branch, flowing mostly south of 40 degrees S, is blocked by topography and is deflected westward without significant changes in its physical properties. A northern branch crosses the Cape Basin with strong modification of its physical properties. The Agulhas Current forms an important link in the global ocean thermohaline circulation by its role in the interocean exchange of water south of Africa. This process of ring shedding at the current's retroflection is dependent on perturbations to its trajectory that are sensitive to bathymetry. These perturbations may furthermore force the current to intersect shallow regions resulting in substantial changes to its path. Physical speciation of iron in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean along a transect from the subtropical domain to the Weddell Sea Gyre ArchiMer

[1] Distributions of total dissolvable iron (TDFe; unfiltered), dissolved iron (DFe; 0.2 mu m filtered), and soluble iron (SFe; 0.02 mu m filtered) were investigated during the BONUS-GoodHope cruise in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean (34 degrees S/17 degrees E-57 degrees S/0 degrees, February-March 2008). In the mixed layer, mean values of 0.43 +/- 0.28 and 0.22 +/- 0.18 nmol L-1 were measured for TDFe and DFe, respectively. In deeper waters, TDFe and DFe concentrations were 1.07 +/- 0.68 and 0.52 +/- 0.30 nmol L-1, respectively. We quantify the wind contribution to the development of interannual sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies along the shelf of southern Africa. We compare numerical simulations that differ only in the amount of variability kept in the ERS1/2-derived surface wind forcing. Surprisingly, most of the cold and warm episodes over the Agulhas Bank are strictly related to local fluctuations of the forcing, whereas the shelf of the west coast extending 400 km north of Cape Columbine is equally sensitive to open-sea wind fluctuations. Seasonal Sea Surface Temperature (SST) changes in the Western English Channel have been estimated for the previous decades from high-resolution satellite data. Coastal seas, well separated from offshore waters by intense frontal structures, show colder SST by 1 to 2°C in summer. A significant warming trend is observed in the autumn season. This positive trend is stronger offshore, with an annual mean SST increase of 0.32°C/decade, but weaker in coastal waters (0.23°C/decade), where strong vertical mixing induced by tides and winds acts to reduce surface warming. The science guiding the \EURECA campaign and its measurements are presented. \EURECA comprised roughly five weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic — eastward and south-eastward of Barbados. We use the tracer and velocity fields of a climatological ocean model to investigate the ability of Argo-like data to estimate accurately water mass movements and transformations, in the style of analyses commonly applied to the output of ocean general circulation model. To this end, we introduce an algorithm for the reconstruction of a fully non-divergent three-dimensional velocity field from the simple knowledge of the model vertical density profiles and 1000-m horizontal velocity components. The Tara Oceans expedition (2009-2013) sampled contrasting ecosystems of the world oceans, collecting environmental data and plankton, from viruses to metazoans, for later analysis using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. It surveyed 210 ecosystems in 20 biogeographic provinces, collecting over 35,000 samples of seawater and plankton. The interpretation of such an extensive collection of samples in their ecological context requires means to explore, assess and access raw and validated data sets. Predicting responses of plankton to variations in essential nutrients is hampered by limited in situ measurements, a poor understanding of community composition, and the lack of reference gene catalogs for key taxa. The structure and patterns of variability of the southern Benguela coastal upwelling system are investigated with a high-resolution regional model forced by QuikSCAT winds over 1999-2003. The relevance of this global wind product is tested, at first, for the specific nearshore southeast Atlantic; then, the wind products are spatially or temporally degraded from the original 0.5 degrees daily fluxes and are used to diagnose the main scales of the surface dynamical forcing variability. Time resolution appears as a crucial factor in the wind stress to retrieve the patterns of interannual anomalies in sea surface temperatures in a good agreement with independent NASA Pathfinder observations. The meridional overturning circulation (MOC) is a global system of surface, intermediate, and deep ocean currents. The MOC connects the surface layer of the ocean and the atmosphere with the huge reservoir of the deep sea and is the primary mechanism for transporting heat, freshwater, and carbon between ocean basins. Climate models show that past changes in the strength of the MOC were linked to historical climate variations. Further research suggests that the MOC will continue to modulate climate change scenarios on time scales ranging from decades to centuries [Latif et al., 2006].

The baroclinic transport of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current south of Africa ArchiMer

Five hydrographic transects at nominal longitudes 0 degrees E and 30 degrees E, and fourteen expendable bathythermograph (XBT) sections near the former longitude are used to study the baroclinic transport of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) between Africa and Antarctica. The bottom-referenced geostrophic transport between the Subtropical Front and the ACC Southern Boundary is 147 +/- 10 Sv. Estimating the transport from the XBTs using a technique previously employed south of Australia proves delicate because of an irregular bathymetry and water mass variations. Marine plankton support global biological and geochemical processes. Surveys of their biodiversity have hitherto been geographically restricted and have not accounted for the full range of plankton size. We assessed eukaryotic diversity from 334 size-fractionated photic-zone plankton communities collected across tropical and temperate oceans during the circumglobal Tara Oceans expedition. We analyzed 18S ribosomal DNA sequences across the intermediate plankton-size spectrum from the smallest unicellular eukaryotes (protists, > 0.8 micrometers) to small animals of a few millimeters. The energy radiated by the Earth toward space does not compensate the incoming radiation from the Sun leading to a small positive energy imbalance at the top of the atmosphere (0.4-1 Wm(-2)). This imbalance is coined Earth's Energy Imbalance (EEI). It is mostly caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and is driving the current warming of the planet. Precise monitoring of EEI is critical to assess the current status of climate change and the future evolution of climate. But the monitoring of EEI is challenging as EEI is two orders of magnitude smaller than the radiation fluxes in and out of the Earth system.
