Data products for fish stocks and ecosystem assessment:the PELGAS survey example ArchiMer

The initial objective of the PELGAS integrated survey was to assess the biomass of small pelagic fish in the Bay of Biscay in spring. Sampling has been extended to study the spatial structure and dynamics of the pelagic ecosystem in springtime. The PELGAS survey has produced since 2000 long-term time-series of spatially-explicit data and indices, describing the main pelagic ecosystem components: hydrology, phytoplankton, mesozooplankton, fish and megafauna. In addition to small pelagic fish biomass estimates used for fish stock assessment, the survey now delivers two types of ecosystem products: standard gridded maps of ecosystem parameters, and a time series dataset of indicators of the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem state. The evolution of the PELGAS...

Can modelling the drift of bycaught dolphin stranded carcasses help identify involved fisheries? An exploratory study ArchiMer

Between the 1st of February and the March 31, 2017, 793 stranded cetaceans were found along the French Atlantic coasts. Common dolphins made up 84% of these strandings, and most of these presented evidence of death in fishing gear. The aim of this work is to test an approach that could help identify the fisheries potentially involved in a given stranding event. To do this we examined how the distributions of likely areas of mortality of bycaught dolphins, inferred from carcass drift modelling, coincide with fishing effort statistics of various fleets, generated from the Vessel Monitoring System, in the area over the same dates. Using reverse drift modelling, two main mortality areas were identified. A total of 3690 common dolphins (IC95% [2230; 6900]) were...

Diet overlap between harbour porpoise and bottlenose dolphin: An argument in favour of interference competition for food? ArchiMer
Spitz, Jérôme; Rousseau, Yann; Ridoux, Vincent.
In aquatic ecosystems, competitive interactions are occasionally described. Violent attacks on harbour porpoises by bottlenose dolphins were reported and it was proposed that this behavior could result from competitive interactions for food. This hypothesis implies that the two predators should share all or part of they prey range. In this work, we describe the diets of each predator in the Bay of Biscay and adjacent areas from stomach content analysis of stranded animals. The diet of the harbour porpoise was mostly composed of small schooling fish living close to the seafloor (98 percent by mass). The diet of the bottlenose dolphin was characterised by the presence of large specimens of demersal fish (91 percent by mass) and cephalopods. Several prey...

Fifteen years of data from the PELGAS integrated survey (2000-2015): what have we learned on the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem? ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Petitgas, Pierre; Romagnan, Jean-baptiste; Huret, Martin; Duhamel, Erwan; Dupuy, Christine; Spitz, Jérôme; Authier, Matthieu; Berger, Laurent; Doremus, Ghislain; Bourriau, Paul; Grellier, Patrick; Masse, Jacques; Sanchez, Florence.

Sampling has been extended to produce long-term time-series of spatially-explicit data and indices, describing the main pelagic ecosystem components: hydrology, phytoplankton, mesozooplankton, fish and megafauna. A collaborative analysis of these datasets has brought new insights on the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem summarized here. New results on single ecosystem components include an analysis of water samples to groundtruth the results of an ocean color algorithm aiming at detecting phytoplanktonic coccolithophores. New insights on mesozooplankton spatio-temporal distribution and energy...

Faune francaise de l’Atlantique. Batoïdes : Torpediniformes, Rajiformes & Myliobatiformes (Craniata : Elasmobranchii) ArchiMer
Quero, Jean-claude; Leaute, Jean-pierre; Spitz, Jérôme.
A state of the French Atlantic marine fauna of the Torpediniformes or electric ray (1 family : 3 species), of the Rajiformes or ray and skate (1 family : 18(19) species) and of the Myliobatiformes or syingray, butterfly ray, eagle ray…(3 families : 6 species) is given. In the Bay of Biscay, the large skates which were common in the past, are almost extinct nowadays. The rays living exclusively on the continental shelf area, the most frequented by fishermen, are now endangered.
