In response to increasing efforts for reducing concentrate inputs to organic dairy production in grassland-rich areas of Europe, a long-term study was conducted, which assessed the impacts of concentrate reductions on cows’ performance, health, fertility and average herd age. In total, 42 Swiss commercial organic dairy cattle farms were monitored over 6 years (‘Y0’, 2008/09 until ‘Y5’, 2013/14). In comparison with overall data of Swiss herdbooks (including conventional and organic farms), the herds involved in the project had lower milk yields, similar milk solids, shorter calving intervals and higher average lactation numbers. During the first 3 project years farmers reduced the concentrate proportion (i.e. cereals, oilseeds and grain legumes) in the... |

The objective of this study was to assess effects on intramammary infections and somatic cell score (SCS) upon reduction antibiotic udder treatments. The study was part of an udder health programme (pro-Q) implementing preventive measures and complementary treatment methods. The treatment proportion decreased from annually 39 to 20 per 100 cows. A total of 10'000 of quarter milk samples out of 4 yearly investigations of 33 Swiss dairy herds were analysed .There was no general change in somatic cell score (SCS) considering all taken samples. A significant increase of Staphylococcus ssp. findings (12%) could be observed beside a decrease of the SCS in samples of this pathogens group. Using GLM statistical analysis, significant effects by lactation... |

Mastitis in dairy cows is a multi-causal disease. Animal husbandry is one of the important factors influencing herd udder health. In our study, skin lesion scores and cleanness scores are used as animal-based indicators for husbandry problems. We investigated the impact of husbandry on the prevalence of skin lesions and the correlation between skin lesions, cleanness and udder health in 67 herds joining the Swiss udder health project “pro-Q”. 62.8% of all examined cows had at least one skin lesion. 13% of all cows were seriously dirty. Housing factors, such as dimension and design of the lying area influenced the prevalence of skin lesions significantly. Hard surface, rubber mats, narrow dimensions of lying place, horns, as well as stanchion barns... |

Since 2003, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) is realizing a herd health management programme (“pro-Q” project) focussing on udder health and the use of homeopathic based treatment and prevention. Aims of the project are: (1) to reduce antibiotic mastitis treatments, (2) to optimize udder health and (3) to improve longevity, measured as averaged herd lactation number. The farms get expert advice on prevention and treatment at herd- and animal-level. After 2 years, treatment recordings of the 78 investigated farms showed that antibiotic mastitis therapies were reduced from 37 to 26 treatments per 100 cows and year (equals a reduction of 28%). The mean herd lactation number increased significantly by 0.2 lactations from 3.3 to 3.5... |
