Abstract. The emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and leaching of nitrate (NO3) have considerable negative impacts on climate and the environment. Although these environmental burdens are on average less per unit area in organic than in non-organic production, they are not smaller per unit of product. If organic farming is to maintain its goal of being an environmentally friendly production system, these emissions should be mitigated. We discuss the impact of possible triggers within organic arable farming practice for the risk of N2O emissions and NO3 leaching under European climatic conditions, and possible strategies to reduce these. Organic arable crop rotations can be characterised as diverse with frequent use of legumes, intercropping and organic... |

Evaluation of the usefulness of six common winter wheat varieties (Kobra, Roma, Korweta, Sukces, Zyta, Mewa) and one variety (Schwabenkorn) of spelt winter wheat (Triticum spelta) for cultivation in organic farming was the aim of the research. The research was based on a special field experiment established in 1994 on a grey-brown podzolic soil in which different crop production systems (organic, integrated and conventional) are compared. The research was conducted between 2002 and 2004 on the field of winter wheat in the organic system. The following parameters were taken into account in the research: Leaf Area Index, nitrogen nutrient status and grain yield. Average grain yields of winter wheat independently of the year and variety amounted to 4.36... |

Intensity of leaf infestation by selected fungal pathogens and yielding of old winter wheat cultivars (Ostka Kazimierska, Kujawianka Więcławicka, Wysokolitewka Sztywnosłoma) against a background of modern winter wheat cultivars (Kobra, Roma, Korweta, Sukces, Zyta, Mewa) in conditions of organic farming was assessed. The research was based on a special field experiment established in 1994 year on a grey-brown podzolic soil in which different crop production systems are compared. The research was conducted in 2005 and 2006. Average for 2 years grain yield of winter wheat for all cultivars amounted to 3.0 t/ha. In both years the largest yields were noted for modern winter wheat cultivars. Old cultivars of wheat reacted better on water deficiency than modern... |

Energy efficiency and greenhouse gas (methane and nitrous oxide) emissions were investigated in 2003 on 20 organic farms in the central part of Poland (Kujawsko-pomorskie voivodeship) using a questionnaire developed in the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in Pulawy (Poland). Statistical data from the Central Statistical Office concerning the agriculture in the Kujawsko-pomorskie voivodeship was also used. A simple index (Ee) defined as a ratio of the total energy value of agricultural production (Pe) to the material and energy inputs (Ne) (in MJ) was used to evaluate the energy efficiency. The average value of this index was 2.05; however, it ranged from 0.04 to 16.59. In the organic farms, direct energy carriers (liquid and solid fuels and... |
