From the ”Procèes-Verbaux des Séances de l’Académie tenues depuis la fondation de l’Institut jusqu’au mois d’août 1835. Publ. conf. à une décision de l’Académie par M.M. les secrétaires perpétuels. Tomes 1-10, 1910-1922”, several publication dates of the parts of French works could be stated with more certainty. It is a pity, however, that no information whatsoever is given on the contents of the publications (i.c. fascicles). Bélanger, Ch. P., Voyage aux Indes-Orientales, etc. 1825-29. Botanique I. Phanérogames-Botanique II. Cryptogamie. |

The western part of Manipur State and the Gandhamardan Hills in Orissa were botanized for about one month each by Shri K. C. Malick of the Calcutta Museum, who took 900 and 400 numbers respectively. Forest in N. Bengal was botanized by Shri B. Krishna, who in 3 weeks took 400 numbers. The Botanical Survey of India reports that a many-discipline expedition to Subansiri District in Arunachal Pradesh yielded over 8000 specimens. Collections were also made in the Garo Hills, south-western parts of Khasi Hills in Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mussoorie, remote areas of Ladakh, Chamoli Garhwal and Kumaon in NW. Himalaya; Seoni District in Madhya Pradesh; Ranjagarh Kapilas hills, Koraput District, Gandhamardan hills in Orissa; Bikaner, Pali & Barmer Districts... |

The abbreviations used are in general in conformity with common usage in botanical taxonomy, though, where possible, the citation has been limited to the minimum necessary for strict taxonomic reference, e.g.: ‘F.v.M. Fragm.’—for F. VON MUELLER, Fragmenta phytographiae Australiae, ‘Walp. Ann.’—for Walpers, Annales, ‘BAILEY, Compr. Cat. Q. Pl.’—for F. M. BAILEY, Comprehensive Catalogue of Queensland Plants. ‘In’ after the author’s name has been used only if one author has published in the work of another author, e.g.: ‘BENTH. in B. & H. Gen. Pl.’, ‘CLARKE in Hook. f. & Th. Fl. Br. Ind.’, or in the serial which, for the sake of clearness should be preceded by the name of its editor, e.g. ‘SCHLTR in Fedde, Rep.’; ‘Rep.’ alone would not be sufficient,... |

If under the following book titles it is said ”Add” it means that the new data are an addition to the ”Dates of Publication” by Stearn and van Steenis-Kruseman in Fl. Mal. I, 4 (1954) clxiii-ccxix, or to later information published in this Bulletin, parts 11-14, 1955-1959. I am indebted to Prof. Dr H. Merxmüller and his collaborators at Munich for data found in the ”Allgemeine Bibliographie” (Leipzig, vols 1-14, 1856-1869). Dr F.A. Stafleu was so kind to draw our attention to a French publication on the works of Lamarck and gave us permission to extract it here. |

ANONYMOUS. Food and fruit-bearing forest species. 2: Examples from southeastern Asia. FAO, Via della Terme di Caracalla, 00100 Rome, Italy. FAO Forestry Paper 44/2. 1984. xx, 167 pp., ill. Price unknown. ISBN 92.5.102153.8. This brochure is the second of a series on potential food plants from various tropical areas. The idea to produce the series was generated during the 8th World Forestry Congress in Jakarta in 1978. It reflects the increasing public awareness of the forest as a resource for mankind and as such is to be welcomed. The paper prepared by the Forest Research Institute, Laguna, contains the descriptions of 70 species with notes on names, uses, propagation, all in relation to the Philippines. |

On 3 September 1977, Dr. H.P. Nooteboom (L) went to Ceylon for 2 months to collect additional material of Symplocaceae for ’A revised Flora of Ceylon’. Although this project was due to end by September 1977, it appeared to have been extended for another year. The genus Symplocos, with about 20 taxa, is found in the wet zone (in the mountains of the central part, in the mossy forest up to 2400 m, descending to sea-level in the everwet primary forest in the SW. part of the island). Some species also occur in the secondary forest in the same region, one species is found in the whole island, in a variety of vegetation types, but mostly in secondary forest and shrubbery. Dr. Nooteboom could collect material of all the taxa, sometimes in many individuals, which... |

Judging from the volume here reviewed it is to be expected that this atlas will become a splendid comprehensive survey of the ‘seeds’ of the NW. European Phanerogams. The complete work is planned to consist of 4 or 5 parts, of which part I will be published last, as it will contain general information and keys to the families. It is self-evident that the keys to the genera of Cyperaceae, to their sections, and in large sections to the species, wholly based on fruit-characters, cannot be easy. In random testing they proved to be reliable, as are the accurate descriptions. |

The thin formidable-sized folio book by J.G.S. van Breda ‘Genera et species Orchidearum, etc.’ is a little-known publication even to orchidologists, as most of the new names proposed in it have disappeared into synonymy long ago. It was never finished, only three fascicles of the eighteen promised are generally supposed to have been published. For their publication dates see De Wit (1950) and Stafleu & Cowan (1976). In the library of the former ‘Koloniaal Museum’, Haarlem, the Netherlands, now the ‘Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen’ (KIT), Amsterdam, the former draughtsman of the Flora Malesiana Foundation and amateur orchidologist J. Vuijk found a copy which contained not three, but four fascicles. At that time this was merely briefly noted (Van... |

On 31 May 1976 Drs. A.J. Kostermans and C.E. Ridsdale, both of Leiden, set out on a 10 weeks botanical expedition to the Western Ghats in S. India as a summer holiday tour, partly financed by contributions from British Government Parliamentary Grant In Aid, administered by the Royal Society, London and the Treub Maatschappij, Utrecht. This support is most gratefully acknowledged. Part of the expenses were paid by the botanists themselves. Here follows their itinerary. The aim was to collect specimens of this area of the world where one of the earlier works on botany appeared: Rheede van Drakenstein, Hortus Malabaricus, 1678-1703. The area is greatly under-collected and many of the species are known only from a single collection. The area was studied by... |

As most of our readers who generally will have at hand a copy of the Flora Malesiana will have seen, the last part of volume 4 contains a most valuable list compiled by Mrs M.J. van Steenis-Kruseman and Mr W.T. Stearn on ”Dates of Publication”. Though aiming primarily for use of Flora Malesiana it is not limited to works dealing with the Malaysian region only but included all works which have come to our knowledge of which more precise data could be given than Pritzel gave eighty years ago. We are certain that quite a number of data have escaped our attention and we have also put forward that there is apparently no end to attain in this matter. It is for this reason that we continue this bibliographical information.-—Ed. Bentley, R. & H. Trimen,... |
