The aim of the present study was to investigate and optimize the protein supply of organic dairy cows kept in Austrian grassland regions through the inclusion of maize silage into the diet. Therefore, two feeding trials were carried out. Trial I examined the effect of a partial substitution of purchased concentrates with home grown maize silage on feed and nutrient intake, milk performance and feed efficiency. Trial II was conducted to investigate the effect of maize silage or grain as an energy supplement to grass-clover silage based diets. In trial I milk yield decreased by 10%, however concentrate intake per kg milk was markedly reduced and dietary N efficiency and energy balance tendencially improved. Trial II revealed that even a small amount of maize... |

Sward height is a key parameter for rotational grazing. Influence of different sward heights (low: 8 cm, medium: 10 cm, high: 12 cm) on DM yield and grass growth rate were investigated on an intensive grazed area at the research farm of the Organic Institute of AREC Raumberg-Gumpenstein during the vegetation period of 2013. The significant highest yields were found in treatment “high” (12,581 kg DM ha-1) and “medium” (12,119 kg DM ha-1). Treatment “low” reached a yield of 10,343 kg DM ha-1. During summer, grass growth rate was about 60 kg DM ha-1 day-1 in average. |

The aim of this study was to highlight the economic importance of longevity in organic dairy cattle husbandry. Performance and reproductive data of 44,976 Austrian organic Simmental dairy cows were analysed by applying a bio-economic model. A farm scenario as well as different market situations were modelled. Overall costs declined with increasing longevity due to dropping replacement costs. Annual profit was influenced considerably by milk yield and longevity. Short-lived animals needed substantially higher annual milk yields than long-lived animals to achieve equal annual profits. The applied market scenarios showed an increasing importance of longevity in situations of increasing economic pressure (+20% of concentrate price). It has been proven that... |

Continuous grazing provides low-cost forage with a high feeding value for milk and beef production and is a suitable pasture system in organic farming. To assess the forage feeding value of continuously grazed sward, a 3-field trial was carried out under harsh east Alpine conditions (680 m altitude, 7°C average temperature, 1000 mm annual precipitation). Forage contents of net energy (6.3-7.0 MJ NEL kg-1 DM) and crude protein (202-236 g kg-1 DM) varied on a high level during the vegetation period. Moreover, amounts of crude fibre (176-243 g kg-1 DM) and neutral detergent fibre (373-475 g kg-1 DM) were within the recommended range for ruminates. In conclusion, continuous grazing as a possible organic grassland use under harsh climate conditions can be... |

In a three year on-going project 10 organic dairy farms are supervised by developing farm adopted strategies to reduce the concentrate input in dairy cow feeding. The researchers and advisors consult and accompany the pioneering group. They stimulate active learning and record the results and experiences. Different approaches are used in the project to achieve the project aim: (1) discussions about possible strategies and their results (2) on-farm documentations and observational research, monitoring and comparison, (3) evaluation and systematic inclusion of the experiences of farmers (stable schools), advisors and researchers in the project, (4) describing “systems that work”. Within the first two project years, farmers reduced the concentrate input from... |

Dairy cow strains arising from conventional breeding programmes are frequently perceived as unsuitable for organic and low input milk production systems. While farmers have identified a number of breeds and strains as being ‘adapted’ to organic and low input systems, there is often little scientific evidence to indicate that these breeds are more appropriate than conventional genotypes. Thus the purpose of this study is to examine the response of different dairy genotypes (i.e. "conventional" versus "adapted") to an undersupply with nutrients and energy, which is a characteristic of low input systems with limited dietary supplementation and to provide information on the metabolic response of dairy cows to such dietary restrictions. |

In a research project at HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein 6 organic dairy farms are accompanied by converting to the „Low-Input“ seasonal grass-based system in the mountainous regions of Austria. After the first trial year (October 1st, 2004 – Septem-ber 30th, 2005), a pasture grass proportion of 36-60% in the total feeding ration per year could be determined, depending on each farm. Some farms completely dis-pensed with concentrate during the grazing period. Regarding the milk contents, a decreasing fat and protein percentage as well as an increasing urea content during the grazing period was observed. The project farms reached an average value of 0.26 cent of payments free of direct charge per kg milk. This value is a little bit higher than the Austrian... |

The composition of cow milk is strongly affected by the feeding regimen. Because milk components are routinely determined using mid-infrared (MIR) spectrometry, MIR spectra could also be used to estimate an animal’s ration composition. The objective of this study was to determine whether and how well amounts of dry matter intake and the proportions of concentrates, hay, grass silage, maize silage, and pasture in the total ration can be estimated using MIR spectra at an individual animal level. A total of 10,200 milk samples and sets of feed intake data were collected from 90 dairy cows at 2 experimental farms of the Agricultural Research and Education Centre in Raumberg-Gumpenstein, Austria. For each run of analysis, the data set was split into a... |

In the present study basic data was collected from eight organic dairy farms where no concentrates were fed (KF0). This data (from 2010 and 2011) was compared with results from about 140 Austrian organic dairy farms included in a federal extension program. The 140 farms were divided into three groups, depending on the amount of concentrate fed per cow and year (KF1: up to 975 kg, KF2: 976-1,400 kg, KF3: more than 1.400 kg). The ECM yield increased from 5,093 kg in KF0 to 6,828 kg in KF3. Calculated forage milk yield decreased by increasing concentrate supplementation from 5,093 kg (KF0) to 4,412 kg (KF3). Data related to animal health did not significantly differ between the four groups. However the calving interval was longer in KF0 but non-return-rate... |

The influence of calving season on milk yield, lactation length, composition of the diet, reproduction and nutrient supply for pasture-based systems in a mountainous region of Austria was examined with thirty-three dairy cows on an organic farm. Three groups of cows with a mean calving date of 17 November (group 1), 25 December (group 2) and 20 February (group 3) were compared. During winter periods the cows were housed and fed with grass silage, hay and a restrictive amount of concentrate. Cows were on pasture for 202 days in 2008 and 203 days in 2009 (177 day and night grazing days). The pasture area was continuously grazed at an average sward height of 4.7 cm. Calving in February (group 3) significantly depressed lactation length and milk-fat yield and... |
