THE RELATIVE SIGNIFICANCE OF A RANGE OF ECONOMIC POLICIES FOR IMPROVING AUSTRALIA'S BALANCE OF TRADE AgEcon
Stoeckel, Andrew B.; Higgs, Peter J..
Australia faces a very serious trade problem. A large improvement in the balance of trade is required simply to stop its international debt from rising above levels which are already considered too high. In this paper, a range of economic policies are examined. Each generates a $A1 billion improvement (in 1985-86 prices) in the balance of trade after about 2 years. The following economic shocks are examined: an increase in world agricultural prices; a cut in real wages; a reduction in protection for manufacturing industries; a change in the tax mix in favour of indirect taxation; and a contraction in real domestic absorption. The impacts of these shocks are derived from simulations with ORANI, a computable general equilibrium model of the Australian...

SOME GENERAL EQUILIBRIUM EFFECTS OF MINING GROWTH ON THE ECONOMY AgEcon
Stoeckel, Andrew B..
The effects of mining sector growth are analysed with a five-sector general equilibrium model. The effect of the mineral discoveries is to cause the agricultural sector to contract, but to cause the import-competing sector to expand by a small amount--a result which differs from Gregory's (1976) analysis. However, a mining boom caused by increases in external demand, rather than by new discoveries, leads to a different set of results. Some likely effects of the boom on the growth rates of the different sectors in the economy are reported. Finally, the effects of an export tax on minerals are considered.

A REVIEW OF THREE RESEARCH PROGRAMS IN QUANTITATIVE MODELLING IN THE BUREAU OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AgEcon
Kingma, Onko Tjerek; Longmire, James L.; Stoeckel, Andrew B..
Elements of three of the BAE's research programs in economic modelling of the rural sector, namely, the modelling of agricultural production systems, rural commodity markets and agriculture within a general equilibrium framework, are reviewed with emphasis on the use of such models in policy work. Suggestions are made for further modelling in these areas.
