Two new Elysia species were found in brackish mangrove habitats in the southern part of the Gulf of Thailand in the area around Pattani. Elysia bangtawaensis, a large species with grooved rhinophores, was discovered living on bare mud in mangrove forests. This species looks like a fallen leaf and shows sophisticated phototrophic behaviour enabling it to survive without feeding while producing many eggs over a long period. Elysia siamensis, a small species, was found on filamentous green algae in a brackish channel. The latter species has long, thin, cylindrical rhinophores, and is further characterized by a screw-like penis, and a long thin process on the tip of its metapodium. |

Two new sacoglossans were found in brackish mangrove habitats near Pattani in the southern part of the Gulf of Thailand. Both are small species (< 10 mm) living hidden in clay with small green algae high in the intertidal zone becoming not submerged for days. They have black pigment on the dorsal side and their bodies clearly consist of two parts. One is named Gascoignella nukuli n. sp., which looks similar to G. aprica Jensen, 1985 from Hong Kong, but differs in radula, penial spine, body proportions and habitat. The other is G. jabae n. sp., which has two parallel cerata instead of a visceral sack on the posterior side of the body. |

This paper deals with the Opisthobranchia collected by the Netherlands Biological Expedition to Turkey 1959. The collection is deposited in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden. The material was chiefly collected in three areas, viz. the Bay of Antalya and the Bay of Mersin (formerly Içel), both in the Eastern Mediterranean on the south coast of Turkey, and the environs of Trabzon on the southeast coast of the Black Sea. The collection is rather small, comprising 25 species, which is probably only a fraction of the total Opisthobranchiate fauna of Turkey. Of course most of these species have also been recorded from the much better known Western Mediterranean. All the same, examination of the collection yielded some surprising facts. To my... |

The publication by ENGEL, GEERTS and VAN REGTEREN ALTENA (1940) on Alderia modesta (Loven, 1844) and Limapontia depressa Alder & Hancock, 1862, in the estuaries of southwestern Holland (provinces of Zuid-Holland and Zeeland) induced us to look for these animals on other Dutch mud-flats, viz. in the Waddenzee, where they had not been collected before. First we inspected the gullies between the mud flats, which contain more than 1 metre of water at high tide and, in addition, the Zostera nana-zone, which is dry at low tide and about under 50 cm of water at high tide. Lateron we searched for algae in the brackish inland waters, which will be mentioned below. In all these localities we did not find a single Alderia modesta or Limapontia depressa. |

The occurrence of a penis in female gastropods of the superfamily Muricoidea (infraorder Neogastropoda) has commonly been accepted as an indicator of tributyltin (TBT) pollution. Some species seem less sensitive than others, and one belonging to the family Columbellidae has been reported that it lacks the imposex response. During a survey in South-east Asian waters, females of Cymbiola nobilis and Melo melo (family Volutidae) with a small penis and an external vas deferens were initially considered as showing imposex. Doubt arose when 100% of the females had a penis on sites where other gastropods showed no or a low imposex incidence. During the present study, several hypotheses could be rejected such as (1) that the volutes are extremely sensible for TBT;... |
