Progressive shoaling of the equatorial Pacific thermocline over the last eight glacial periods ArchiMer
Regoli, Fabienne; De Garidel-thoron, Thibault; Tachikawa, Kazuyo; Jian, Zhiming; Ye, Liming; Droxler, Andre W.; Lenoir, Guillaume; Crucifix, Michel; Barbarin, Nicolas; Beaufort, Luc.
The depth of equatorial Pacific thermocline is diagnostic of the main modes of tropical climates. Past estimates of Pacific thermocline dynamics have been reconstructed either for the Last Glacial Maximum or on longer timescales at low resolution. Here we document a new high-resolution set of reconstructed past sea surface and subsurface waters temperatures from the southwestern subequatorial Pacific, core MD05-2930, in the Gulf of Papua, over the last 800 ka. We used two morphotypes of Globigerinoides ruber known to live at different water depths to reconstruct past stratification. We estimated calcification temperature of each morphotypes by Mg/Ca paleothermometry. Our subequatorial Pacific thermocline paleotemperature record indicates a response of the...

Extensive wet episodes in Late Glacial Australia resulting from high-latitude forcings ArchiMer
Bayon, Germain; De Deckker, Patrick; Magee, John W.; Germain, Yoan; Bermell, Sylvain; Tachikawa, Kazuyo; Norman, Marc D..
Millennial-scale cooling events termed Heinrich Stadials punctuated Northern Hemisphere climate during the last glacial period. Latitudinal shifts of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) are thought to have rapidly propagated these abrupt climatic signals southward, influencing the evolution of Southern Hemisphere climates and contributing to major reorganisation of the global ocean-atmosphere system. Here, we use neodymium isotopes from a marine sediment core to reconstruct the hydroclimatic evolution of subtropical Australia between 90 to 20 thousand years ago. We find a strong correlation between our sediment provenance proxy data and records for western Pacific tropical precipitations and Australian palaeolakes, which indicates that Northern...

Circulation Changes in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea Over the Past 23,000 Years Inferred From Authigenic Nd Isotopic Ratios ArchiMer
Cornuault, Marine; Tachikawa, Kazuyo; Vidal, Laurence; Guihou, Abel; Siani, Giuseppe; Deschamps, Pierre; Bassinot, Franck; Revel, Marie.
The Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS) is a key region to study circulation change because of its own thermohaline circulation. In this study, we focused on intermediate/deep water circulation since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) including the sapropel S1 period. Two cores from the Levantine Sea and the Strait of Sicily, respectively, collected at 1,780 m and 771 m water depth, were studied using Nd-143/Nd-144 (epsilon(Nd)) of foraminiferal tests and leachates as well as benthic foraminiferal stable isotopes (delta C-13, delta O-18). This approach allowed the determination of variations in (1) the North Atlantic water contribution to the Mediterranean basin, (2) water exchanges at the Strait of Sicily, and (3) the influence of the Nile River over the last...

Preservation state of metastable magnesian calcite in periplatform sediments from the Caribbean Sea over the last million years ArchiMer
Sepulcre, Sophie; Tachikawa, Kazuyo; Vidal, Laurence; Thouveny, Nicolas; Bard, Edouard.
Carbonate-rich periplatform sediments represent an active carbon reservoir containing metastable aragonite and magnesian calcite (Mg-calcite, > 4 mol % MgCO(3)). Since Mg-calcite is highly soluble, the preservation state of this mineral provides information on past carbonate systems at water depths shallower than the lysocline. The mineralogy and geochemistry of the carbonate-rich fine fraction (< 63 mu m) was determined for the last 940 ka in a sediment core collected from the Walton Basin (Northern Caribbean Sea, 846 m water depth). Mg/Ca ratios for Mg-calcite showed clear glacial-interglacial cycles with high values (12 mol % MgCO(3)) during interglacials. Glacial Mg/Ca ratios were approximately 8 mol % MgCO(3) for the period from 940 ka to 400...

Neodymium isotopic composition in foraminifera and authigenic phases of South China Sea sediments: Implications for the hydrology of the North Pacific Ocean over the past 25 kyr ArchiMer
Wu, Qiong; Colin, Christophe; Liu, Zhifei; Thil, Francois; Dubois-dauphin, Quentin; Frank, Norbert; Tachikawa, Kazuyo; Bordier, Louise; Douville, Eric.
εNd and normalized Rare Earth Elements (REE) patterns of benthic and planktonic foraminifera and Fe-Mn coatings precipitated on sediments have been investigated for the South China Sea (SCS) to (1) assess the reliability of the extraction of past seawater εNd in the SCS and to (2) reconstruct past hydrological changes during the last 25 kyr. Reductively cleaned mono-specific planktonic foraminifera (Globigerinoides ruber) and mixed benthic foraminifera in core-top sediments from 1500 to 2400 m display similar εNd values to those of the modern Pacific Deep Water (PDW) (εNd of −3.9 to −4.4). Furthermore, the εNd of the reductive cleaning solutions shows similar εNd values to ones obtained on cleaned foraminifera. Combined with PAAS-normalized REE patterns,...

Northeastern Pacific oxygen minimum zone variability over the past 70 kyr: Impact of biological production and oceanic ventilation ArchiMer
Cartapanis, Olivier; Tachikawa, Kazuyo; Bard, Edouard.
During the last glacial period, the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) within the northeastern Pacific Ocean strengthened and weakened on a millennial time scale, demonstrating a tight linkage with northern high latitude climate, although the precise mechanisms responsible remain unknown. Core MD02-2508, retrieved off Baja California, was analyzed for major and trace elements (Br, Ca, Ti, Fe, Mn, and Sr) using a XRF scanner and redox-sensitive trace elements (Cu, Ni, Cd, As, V, Cr, Mo, and U) using the ICP-MS. The trace element content, the Fe/Ti ratio, and Br-based organic carbon exhibit higher values during the Holocene and during warm Dansgaard-Oeschger events than during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), stadials, and Heinrich (H) events. A principal component...

The large-scale evolution of neodymium isotopic composition in the global modern and Holocene ocean revealed from seawater and archive data ArchiMer
Tachikawa, Kazuyo; Arsouze, Thomas; Bayon, Germain; Bory, Aloys; Colin, Christophe; Dutay, Jean-claude; Frank, Norbert; Giraud, Xavier; Gourlan, Alexandra T.; Jeandel, Catherine; Lacan, Francois; Meynadier, Laure; Montagna, Paolo; Piotrowski, Alexander M.; Plancherel, Yves; Puceat, Emmanuelle; Roy-barman, Matthieu; Waelbroeck, Claire.
Neodymium isotopic compositions (143Nd/144Nd or εNd) have been used as a tracer of water masses and lithogenic inputs to the ocean. To further evaluate the faithfulness of this tracer, we have updated a global seawater εNd database and combined it with hydrography parameters (temperature, salinity, nutrients and oxygen concentrations), carbon isotopic ratio and radiocarbon of dissolved inorganic carbon. Archive εNd data are also compiled for leachates, foraminiferal tests, deep-sea corals and fish teeth/debris from the Holocene period (< 10,000 years). At water depths ≥ 1500 m, property-property plots show clear correlations between seawater εNd and the other variables, suggesting that large-scale water mass mixing is a primary control of deepwater εNd...

Sea surface temperature reconstructions over the last 70kyr off Portugal: Biomarker data and regional modeling ArchiMer
Darfeuil, Sophie; Menot, Guillemette; Giraud, Xavier; Rostek, Frauke; Tachikawa, Kazuyo; Garcia, Marta; Bard, Edouard.
This study aims at providing robust temperature reconstructions for a key oceanographic setting in the North Atlantic and at understanding the nature of the temperature signal recorded by the two biomarkers U-37(k) and TEX86, considering season and depth of production. To do so, high-resolution signals of U-37(k) and TEX86 are determined for the last 70kyr for core MD95-2042, located off Portugal. Signals of U-37(k) and TEX86 present a tight correlation, demonstrating a dominant temperature effect. U-37(k) signals correspond well to the annual mean sea surface temperature (SST), whereas TEX86H-derived temperatures are 5.6 degrees C higher, which is unrealistically warm for this area. Unsuitable TEX86 global linear calibrations on the Iberian Margin may...
