Zooplankton grazing pressure in the Oosterschelde (the Netherlands) OMA
Tackx, M.; Bakker, C.; Van Rijswijk, P..
Grazing activity by the dominant zooplankton species in the Oosterschelde (SW Netherlands) was studied as part of an ecological survey accompanying the construction of a storm-surge barrier at the mouth of this tidal inlet. At station WEST, situated at the mouth, potential grazing pressure by the zooplankton amounted to 6% d-1 of the phytoplankton standing stock and 18% of the primary production. At station EAST, in the inland part, 16% of the phytoplankton standing stock and 11% of the primary production was potentially consumed daily. Because the dominant zooplankton species in the inland part (<i>Acartia</i> spp. and cirriped nauplii) tended to feed more on small particles than the dominant species in the seaward part...

Transfer of seston to zooplankton in marine ecosystems OMA
Tackx, M..
When considering zooplankton feeding as one of the pathways involved in the transfer of substances in marine ecosystems, it is important to study the composition and size distribution of the seston: firstly, the elements in which one is interested may be associated with different types and sizes of particles; secondly, particle size and composition are important factors in relation t o the feeding process of the zooplankton itself. High speed cinematographic studies have recently revealed that copepods use two different mechanisms for feeding. Small particles (< 12 pm) are collected by continuous low amplitude movements of the second maxillae and combing of the appendages. Larger particles are detected and collected individually by means of a specific...

Feeding of <i>Acartia tonsa</i> Dana (Copepoda, Calanoida): predation on nauplii of <i>Canuella perplexa</i> T. & A. Scott (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) in the Sluice-dock at Ostend OMA
Tackx, M.; Polk, P..
Feeding experiments in which the zooplankton fraction of the Sluice-dock smaller than 200 µm is offered to <i>Acartia tonsa</i>, the dominant calanoid of this biotope, show that it feeds on the nauplii of <i>Canuella perplexa</i>, the dominant benthic harpacticoid. The ecological implications of this carnivorous feeding, occurring in the presence of natural phytoplankton concentrations, are briefly discussed.

Copepod feeding in the Westerschelde and the Gironde OMA
Tackx, M.; Irigoien, X.; Daro, N.; Castel, J.; Zhu, L.; Zhang, X.; Nijs, J..
As in most European estuaries, the mesoplankton of the Westerschelde and the Gironde is dominated by calanoid copepods. In the Westerschelde, <i>Eurytemora affinis</i> dominates the brackish water area between station 7 and 10 in winter and spring while <i>Acartia tonsa</i> is dominant in summer. Maximum abundance of <i>A. tonsa</i> is located slightly more seawards than that of <i>E. affinis</i>. <i>Acartia bifilosa</i> occurs in winter and spring in lower abundances than <i>A. tonsa</i> and its maximum abundance is located between the brackish and the marine area. In the Gironde, <i>E. affinis</i> dominates in winter and spring between station J and K, with its maximum...

Effect of incubation time and concentration of animals in grazing experiments using a narrow size range of particles OMA
Tackx, M.; Polk, P..
Three concentrations of <i>A. tonsa</i> adults were allowed to feed on a narrow size range suspension of particles. Sampling was done at 4-hour intervals during 24 hours. It is shown that both animal concentration and incubation time considerably influence the obtained ingestion rates and filtering-spectra. These results are discussed in relation to different calculation methods and models.
