Fish parasite diversity in the Amambai river, State Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil Biological Sciences
Pereira, Emily Soares; Mauad, Juliana Rosa Carrijo; Takemoto, Ricardo Massato; Lima-Júnior, Sidnei Eduardo.
This study aimed to describe the diversity of fish parasites in the Amambai River, in the Mato Grosso do Sul State, and generate information to facilitate studies of the biotic integrity of the region. During the period of September 2015 and July 2015, 48 specimens of 11 species of fish were analyzed for parasites. A total of 56.25% of the fish sampled from the Amambai River were infected with one or more metazoan species. A total of 21,514 parasite specimens belonging to 24 different species we found; they were distributed among six groups: Acanthocephala (Neoechinorhynchida), Cestoda (Proteocephalidea), Crustacea (Ergasilidae), Digenea (Cladorchiidae, Dadaytrema), Monogenea (Dactylogyridae) and Nematoda (Atractidae, Cucullanidae, Camallanidae,...

Endoparasitic fauna of Serrasalmus spp. (Characidae: Serrasalminae) in a neotropical floodplain Biological Sciences
Casali, Guilherme Pomaro; Takemoto, Ricardo Massato.
Floodplains systems present complex biodiversity and upper Paraná river floodplain retains a wide variety of terrestrial and aquatic species. Serrasalmus marginatus (nonindigenous species) and Serrasalmus maculatus (native species) are part of this biodiversity component and can be infected by trophic transmission. In order to understand the ecological processes within the upper Paraná river floodplain, endoparasite fauna of those two hosts species were analyzed, considering prevalence, abundance, intensity and richness variables to determine this relationship. So, abundance of acantocephalan Echinorhynchus sp. was positively correlated to S. marginatus length, while Kritskyia annakohnae (Monogenea) prevalence and S. marginatus length presented a negative...

Urbanization effects on the host/parasite relationship in fishes from tributary streams of Pirapó River, Paraná State: assessment of potential environmental bioindicators Biological Sciences
Moreira, Luís Henrique de Aquino; Takemoto, Ricardo Massato; Pavanelli, Gilberto Cezar.
A parasitological study was conducted with 131 fishes belonging to the following species: Poecilia reticulata and Rhamdia quelen species. Samplings occurre  d in tributaries streams of Pirapó River, located in the urban and rural area on the surrounding of Maringa city, State of Paraná. The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of fish endoparasites to determine the environmental quality of streams. There was a high similarity between parasites species considering both sets of environments. No influence of streams groups (urban and rural) on the parasites (Sebekia oxycephala and Cucullanus (Cucullanus) pinnai) prevalence and abundance was found. The Relative Condition Factor (Kn) was not different in urban and rural environments to P. reticulata...

Metazoan endoparasites of Brycon orbignyanus (Characidae: Bryconinae) in a neotropical floodplain Biological Sciences
Fernandes, Eliane da Silva; Casali, Guilherme Pomaro; Takemoto, Ricardo Massato.
Species richness and composition are central themes in community ecology of helminths because they improve the understanding of factors that determine community structure. Floodplain ecosystems and the environmental alterations induced by hydrological cycles are factors that maintain biodiversity over time, as observed in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, where the individuals of Brycon orbignyanus were collected. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether variables such as the richness and abundance of endoparasites are related to the fish size during different hydrological periods (high and low waters). A total of 163 endoparasites belonging to 13 species were collected in the 104 fish examined. Fish size had a positive correlation with mean...

Molecular markers in studies on fish parasites (Platyhelminthes): Review Biological Sciences
Graça, Rodrigo Junio da; Fabrin, Thomaz Mansini Carrenho; Gasques, Luciano Seraphim; Prioli, Sônia Maria Alves Pinto; Prioli, Alberto José; Takemoto, Ricardo Massato.
Studies with molecular markers are currently more common for all groups of living organisms. Molecular techniques used in Platyhelminthes parasites of fishes do not merely reveal complex life cycles, but are important for species distinction and the elucidation of the phylogenetic hypothesis. Current research verified which molecular markers were mainly used phylogenetic studies on Platyhelminthes parasites of fish so that subsidies for further phylogenetic studies in Icthyoparasitology could be provided. Data base of CAPES Journals platform was employed for bibliometric analysis comprising the keywords “fish” and “phylogeny” associated with “Cestoda”, “Digenea” or “Monogenea”. Information retrieved was quantified and tabulated. Most studies were on...
