The experiments were carried out in the Eerika test site of Rõhu experimental station of Institute of agricultural and environmental sciences, Estonian University of Life Sciences in 2012–2016. There were 5 succeeding crops in rotation: red clover, winter wheat, pea, potato and barley undersown with red clover. Four cropping systems were studied. The objective of present research was to investigate the effect of cropping systems on the yield components of potato and on the quality parameters of tubers. THE EFFECT OF FARMING SYSTEM ON SOIL MICROBIAL HYDROLYTICAL ACTIVITY Organic Eprints

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of conventional and organic farming on soil hydrolytic activity (FDA). The experiment consisted of five-field crop rotation with three organic systems: Org 0 without winter cover crops (as control), Org I with winter cover crops and Org II with winter cover crops plus composted manure; and two conventional farming systems: Conv I as control (no fertiliser use) and Conv II (with mineral N). The results show increase of FDA in all systems in 2013. Within the average of 2012-2014 the FDA is the lowest in Conv. I and the highest in Org II system.

Haljasväetistest vahekultuuride kasvatamine külvikorras vähendab umbrohtumust Organic Eprints

Mahepõllumajanduses seab saagikusele tihti piiri umbrohtumus, kuivõrd konkureeritakse kultuurtaimedega vee, päikesevalguse ja toitainete pärast ning sageli ollakse vaheperemeesteks ka kahjuritele ning haigustele (Hole jt., 2005). Samas suurendavad umbrohud elurikkust ja toetavad põllukoosluse ökoloogilist talitluskindlust, luues toidubaasi taimekahjustajate looduslikele vaenlastele. Seetõttu tuleb taimekasvatusele kasuks nende mõningane olemasolu põllul, ent liigse konkurentsi vältimiseks tuleb nende arvukust siiski reguleerida, kuid loodushoidlikul moel. Selles on üheks olulisemaks meetmeks läbimõeldult kavandatud külvikord. Kartuli kasvatamise mõju mulla mikrobioloogilisele aktiivsusele ja orgaanilise süsiniku ning lämmastiku sisaldusele erinevates viljelusviisides Organic Eprints

Viie katseaasta (2012–2016) keskmised tulemused näitavad, et võrreldes tavasüsteemidega on maheviljelussüsteemidel eelised kestlikuks taimekasvatuseks. Viljelussüsteemi mitmekesistamine vahekultuuride ja lisaks veel kompostitud veisesõnnikuga, võimaldab oluliselt parandada mulla omadusi. Tõusis mulla mikroobide aktiivsus, mulla orgaanilise süsiniku ja üldlämmastiku sisaldus. Mulla mikroobide aktiivsuse ja üldlämmastiku sisalduse vahelised seosed aga vajavad jätkuvaid uuringuid.

Keskkonnasõbralik umbrohutõrje maheviljeluses koosneb viljavaheldusest, äestamisest, vaheltharimisest, multšimisest, liblikõieliste kasvatamisest külvikorras ja vahekultuuride (sh talviste kattekultuuride) kasvatamist (Thorup-Kristensen jt., 2003). Käesoleva uurimisega seotud varasemad tulemused näitasid, et talvistest vahekultuuridest rukis osutus umbrohtudele kõige kahjulikumaks, pärssides umbrohuseemnete idanevust. Mõnevõrra vähem toimis raihein, mida oli märgata järgnevates kultuurides - herne ja odra umbrohutaimede tiheduses (Barberi jt., 2014). Nitrogen and carbon release during decomposition of roots and shoots of leguminous green manure crops Organic Eprints

In Nordic conditions, soils are frozen during winter, affecting the decomposition rates of crop residues. Hence, the decomposition rates of above- and underground biomass and the dynamics of the N and C released into the soil were studied in trials focused on green manure crops. The decomposition of the residue and N release from the residue varied among the five species of legume tested. There was a marked difference in decomposition rates between shoots and roots, which may also be explained by the differences in the chemical composition of the residue. The shoot residue decomposes rapidly and it serves as a source of N for the subsequent crop. The root residue decomposes more slowly and this had a positive effect in a crop rotation in the second year....

Finding new cover crops for Estonian conditions Organic Eprints

Cover crops are essential in fallow periods of cropping systems to protect the soil from erosion and loss of plant nutrients through leaching and runoff (especially in winter). Experiments with potential cover crop species were carried out to evaluate their suitability to the local climate. The biomass production of tested cover crops in the experiment that lasted for two years was different depending on the length of the growing seasons.

Organic farming systems should be characterized by excellent soil fertility management to keep plant nutrient cycles short and as closed as possible. Therefore, it is extremely important to establish growing systems that have rotations with appropriate crops and intercrops to ensure fertile and biologically active soils, to enhance biodiversity and to provide high quality crop yields. Locally available organic fertilizers include green manures and animal manure. The influence of green manures as intercrops and these combined with composted cattle manure on soil properties, biodiversity indicators and crop yields was studied in a crop rotation experiment in three organic systems at the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

Maheviljeluses kasutatakse mitmeaastast külvikorda, mis säilitab ja suurendab mulla viljakust ja bioloogilist aktiivsust ning kus kasvatatakse liblikõielisi ja haljasväetistaimi või kasutatakse väetamisel komposteeritud sõnnikut (Mahepõllumajanduse seadus, 2007; Palts ja Vetemaa, 2012). Seega on õhulämmastikku siduvaid ja mügarbaktereid moodustavate liblikõieliste taimede kasvatamine maheviljeluse üheks põhitingimuseks. Liblikõielised taimede kasvatamine soodustab ka teiste toiteelementide (P, K, mikroelemendid) omastamist mullast või orgaanilisest materjalist. Tänapäeval toimub pidev maakasutuse intensiivistamine, mis omakorda mõjutab mullaorganismide elutegevust. Vihmaussid on maakasutuse ja mullaviljakuse jälgimiseks head indikaatorid. Nende arvukus on suur, nad on kergesti identifiseeritavad ja erinevatest põllumajandustöödest otseselt mõjutatavad. Vihmaussidel on mullas mitmeid ülesandeid. Nad osalevad orgaanilise aine lagunemisel ja mulla mineraliseerumise protsessis, suurendavad selle poorsust, õhutavad ning parandavad veehoiuvõimet ja toitainete olemasolu mullas (Edward ja Bohlen, 1996) suurendades sellega taimekasvu (Brown jt., 2004). Üleminek mahepõllupidamisele tekitab mitmeid probleeme. Et keemilisi taimekaitsevahendeid ei või kasutada, on üheks nendest võitlus umbrohtudega. Valdav osa umbrohtudest hakkab kasvama aja jooksul harimisega mulda viidud ja seal aastaid idanemisvõimelisena püsinud seemnetest. Umbrohuseemnevaru koosneb paljudest erinevatest liikidest, millest mõned domineerivad liigid moodustavad 70‒90% kogu seemnevarust, olles enamasti ka põhiprobleemiks (Wilson, 1988). Seemnevaru hulk võib varieeruda suurtes piirides olenevalt mulla tüübist, kasvatatud kultuuridest, harimisvõtetest, külvi ajast ja herbitsiidide kasutamisest. (Grundy, Jones, 2002). Knowledge transfer in organic farming in Estonia Organic Eprints

In order to improve the training and knowledge transfer system, the Ministry of Rural Affairs prepared a long-term programme of knowledge transfer in organic farming for the period 2016–2019. The programme, financed from the Rural Development Plan, has been implemented in cooperation with five organisations. All the programme’s activities are targeted to each part of the organic food production chain: farmers, processors, caterers and distributors.

The influence of green manures as winter cover crops and these combined with composted cattle manure on soil properties, biodiversity indicators and crop yield was studied in a crop rotation experiment in three organic systems at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. The use of green manures as winter cover crops and their combination with cattle manure brought tendencies to improve the soil quality: increased content of organic carbon, pH, soil water permeability, soil water holding capacity, soil microbial activity and abundance of earthworms and ground dwelling arthropods. Depending on the year, yield level of all main crops was increased due to improved soil properties caused by green manures.

Muutused mulla mikroobide hüdrolüütilises aktiivsuses ja orgaanilise süsiniku sisalduses punase ristiku allakülviga odra kasvatamisel Organic Eprints

Uurimistulemustest selgus, et punase ristiku allakülviga odra kasvatamine avaldas soodsat mõju mulla mikroorganismidele, suurendades mullaorganismide hüdrolüütilist aktiivsust. Mulla mikroobide hüdrolüütilise aktiivsuse (FDA) määramistulemused olid pärast punase ristiku allakülviga odra kasvatamist tavaviljeluse aladel 18,6% ja mahealadel 37,2% võrra suuremad võrreldes eelvilja (kartuli) alt vabanenud ala mullaga. Katseaastate keskmisena tõusis orgaanilise süsiniku (Corg %) sisaldus maheviljelusviisides 11,6% võrreldes tavaviljelusega. Pärast allakülviga odra kasvatamist võrreldes selle eelsega Corg sisalduses olulisi usaldusväärseid muutusi ei täheldatud. Enne allakülviga odra kasvatamist seos FDA ja Corg vahel sisuliselt puudus.
