The bivalves of the Noordzeekanaal (Mollusca: Bivalvia) In recent years, the macrobenthos of the Noordzeekanaal area, west of Amsterdam, has been surveyed intensively. The area consists of a main, brackish channel and a set of deep sea harbours. It was discovered that several bivalve species were present in large numbers. Many findings came as a surprise. Especially noteworthy is the presence of a (formerly unknown) sizeable population of lagoon cockle Cerastoderma glaucum. This species has only a sparce distribution in the Netherlands (and surrounding countries). Also, the sand gaper Mya arenaria was found to be remarkably common in many places. The false dark mussel Mytilopsis leucophaeata was already known to be abundant on stony substrate... |

Bryozoa or moss animals constitute a conspicuous and species-rich component of hardsubstrate benthic communities in marine and estuarine habitats. To gain insight into the biodiversity of these habitats, knowledge of bryozoan species is indispensable. Since the last comprehensive publication on Dutch species in 2004 much new information has become available. Particularly from the Dutch part of the Continental Flat of the North Sea, the largest natural area of the Netherlands, many new records have been collected. Other reasons to present an updated review are changes in nomenclature, the arrival of some exotic species and identification issues. |

Cylisticus convexus, a rare synanthropic woodlouse in The Netherlands (Crustacea: Isopoda: Cylisticidae) Until recently, the occurrence of Cylisticus convexus (De Geer, 1778) in the Netherlands was uncertain. The only certain old record dates from March 1927, when the species was collected at the coal-shed of the Zoological Museum at Amsterdam. During the last years, two specimens have been collected on semi-natural sites. Both were found on a dike, one near Everdingen, in the province of Gelderland, and one near Ritthem, in the province of Zeeland. These are the first records of C. convexus in the field. Yet the species certainly is very rare in The Netherlands. The most important morphological characteristics of the species are described and... |

The millipede Archiboreoiulus pallidus, new to the Dutch fauna (Myriapoda: Diplopoda) Some specimens of the millipede Archiboreoiulus pallidus (Brade-Birks, 1920) were found in April 1996 in ‘het Bovenste Bos’, a deciduous forest south of Epen, in the province of Limburg. Two weeks later, a visit was paid to the collection of the Plant Protection Service and this resulted in a second record of this species. This specimen was found in June 1977 in an agricultural field near Maastricht, about 15 km west of Epen (province of Limburg). This is the first record of A. pallidus for the Dutch fauna. This species is morphologically very similar to Blaniulus guttulatus. The most important characteristics in which A. pallidus differs from B. guttulatus are described... |

Distribution and ecology of the chironomid Glyptotendipes ospeli in the Netherlands (Diptera: Chironomidae) This paper adresses the ecology, biology and distribution of the larvae of the chironomid Glyptotendipes ospeli Contreras-Lichtenberg, 1999. No information is available on the ecology and biology of the adults. Glyptotendipes ospeli was described in 1999 after larvae collected in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) had been reared to adults. There is only one record from outside the Netherlands: a larva collected in Pripyat River (Belarus). In the Netherlands, larvae of this species have so far been recorded on 36 localities. Locally it can be rather common. Most records originate from standing, medium-sized, shallow waters in cities, e.g. ponds in city... |

Eluma purpurascens, new for the Dutch fauna (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscoidea). The first Dutch specimen of Eluma purpurascens was found on 29 April 1994 on the Kaloot, east of Vlissingen, in the south-western province of Zeeland. One year later the species proved to be locally common along the southern coast of the Oosterschelde and three years later several hundreds mature and immature specimens were found along the southern coast of the Westerschelde and along the coast of the North Sea. So far, the species has not been found on the isle of Schouwen-Duiveland. It seems to be almost absent inland although not all sites where this species might occur have yet been visited. In this paper the morphology of Eluma purpurascens is illustrated, and some notes on... |

The presence of the mole cricket Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa on the Dutch wadden island Texel (Orthoptera) This note addresses the distribution of the mole cricket (Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa (Linnaeus, 1758)) on the Dutch wadden island Texel. In 1998 and 1999, records of this species were published in a local newspaper. Later, more records got known. Until then, there were no known records of this species of Texel nor from the adjacent mainland. It became known that in the year 1900 large numbers of nests of mole crickets were found in a tree nursery on the island and that a population had been living in the surrounding area all through the 20th century. The large numbers in the nursery may suggest a non-native origin, however, no significant numbers of young... |

This paper treats nine water mite species of Limnesia now known to occur in the Netherlands. Two species are new for the Netherlands: L. marmorata and L. curvipalpis. Limnesia angustata, previously considered a variety of L. maculata and raised to species level later on in the 20th century, fits the original description of L. marmorata and is similar to the type material of L. marmorata. Therefore L.angustata is synonymised with L. marmorata. A key to the nine species of the Netherlands is given as well as an overview of the ecology and, where available, information on the biology. Limnesia marmorata is very common, occurring in ditches, lakes and rivers, whereas L. curvipalpis is rare, being found in moorland pools and a eutrophic canal. With both latest... |
