Feed Supplements for Young Dairy Breed Calves After Turn-Out to Pasture: Effect on Weight Gain and Subclinical Coccidiosis in Organic Production Systems Organic Eprints
Nielsen, B.K.; Thamsborg, S.M.; Kristensen, T..
On two organic farms, the effect of supplementation with either home-grown barley or organic commercial concentrates primarily based on local protein sources and barley, on weight gain and subclinical coccidiosis was investigated in 3-5 months old dairy breed calves in the period after turn-out to ryegrass/clover pastures. The calves (mean liveweight ± SD, 124 ± 24 kg and 133 ± 24 kg on Farm I and II respectively) were supplemented daily with 3 kg energy and protein-rich commercial concentrates (group EP), 3 kg barley (group E) or ½ kg barley (group Eres) for 8 weeks following turn-out on pasture. Daily weight gains in the 8 weeks were for Farm I: 1216 and 1042 g/day for group EP and E (P < 0.01) and for Farm II: 1071, 671 and 770 g/day for group EP,...

Studies on preventive strategies and alternative treatments against roundworm in organic pig production systems Organic Eprints
Borgsteede, Fred H.M.; Gaasenbeek, Cor P.A.; van Krimpen, M.M.; Maurer, Veronika; Mejer, Helena; Spoolder, H. A. M.; Thamsborg, S.M.; Vermeer, Herman M..
Organic and many ‘low input’ production standards for pigs require outdoor access, and as a consequence expose the animals to a wide range of potential endo- and ectoparasite infection sources. Conventional anthelmintics are used to control parasitic infections, but their preventive use is banned by the organic standards. The present paper investigates the potential of prevention of infection through better hygiene. Attempts were made to break the infection cycle through thorough pen cleaning 10 weeks after the pigs had been introduced to the pen. Although pen fouling can be reduced, the level of roundworm (Ascaris suum) infection was not reduced. Regular deworming with conventional medication is still required in addition to good hygiene.

Influence of chicory roots /Cichorium intybus L) on boar taint in entire male pigs and female pigs Organic Eprints
Hansen, L.L.; Jensen, M.T.; Mejer, H.; Roepstorff, A.; Thamsborg, S.M.; Byrne, D.V.; Karlsson, A.H.; Hansen-Møller, J.; Tuomola, M..
It is known that pure inulin a fructooligosaccharide extracted from chicory roots can: – reduce boar taint (skatole in backfat and blood) – reduce parasite infection levels when added to specially composed experimental diets • However, the entire chicory roots may, in comparison to inulin: – reduce boar taint more effectively – improve the taste of cooked meat from both male and female pigs – be more effective against parasites when added to normal diet types – contain secondary metabolites that add to the effect of the inulin – be a cheaper solution

Optimal decisions in organic steer production - a model including winter feed level, grazing strategy and slaughtering policy Organic Eprints
Nielsen, B.K.; Kristensen, A.R.; Thamsborg, S.M..
Organic steer production demand several decisions concerning grazing strategy, feeding level in the winter and factors as slaughter weight and length of the fattening period. The production system can be difficult to optimise, therefore the objective of this study was to develop a model to optimise the grazing strategy, feed level in winter and time of fattening and slaughter in organic steer production with regard to economic output at steer level. The steer model is a 4-level hierarchical Markov process with decisions defined at three levels. Decisions taken in the model include grazing strategy (permanent or ryegrass/clover pasture), feed level in winter (high and low), time for beginning of fattening (age 19-27 months) and time of slaughter (age 19-30...

Welfare, health and product quality in organic beef production - a Danish perspective Organic Eprints
Nielsen, B.; Thamsborg, S.M..
Organic beef production in Europe is based on grazing in the summertime and feeding of minimum 60% of roughage during the whole year. Although these recommendations were intended to improve health and welfare several aspects may cause problems in organic beef production systems. This paper gives an overview of welfare, health and product quality in organic beef production with emphasis on organic steer production based on dairy breed bull calves. A short overview of different production systems is given with emphasis on the effect on health, and welfare. Feeding aspects are discussed. Farm studies have shown that organic steer production is based on high amounts of roughages, and only small amounts of cereals are used compared to a conventional production...

Using the statistical method of Free Choice Profiling to evaluate Health in Dairy Cattle Organic Eprints
Fossing, C.; Vaarst, M.; Wemelsfelder, F.; Thamsborg, S.M..
The aim of this study was to test the application of a novel statistical method, Free Choice. Profiling (FCP), for evaluation of cattle health. Participants were two groups of veterinarians: a group with biomedical background (n=7) and a group, who practiced homeopathy (n=8). Examined animals were 10 dairy cows. Using FCP methodology participants evaluated behavior in relation to health by watching video sequences of the cows, and evaluated health status by conducting clinical examinations. Data was analyzed with Generalized Procrustes Analysis, both separately for the 2 groups and for the merged group. Significant agreement was found between participants for all analyses (p<0.001), particularly regarding behavior (between 70-80%). Semantic...

Herbage intake in Danish Jersey and Danish Holstein steers on perennial ryegrass/white clover pasture Organic Eprints
Nielsen, B.; Thamsborg, S.M.; Andersen, H.R.; Kristensen, T..
The objective of this study was to estimate herbage intake in Danish Friesian and Danish Jersey steers at an age of 8-9 months on ryegrass / white clover pasture. The steers were turned out on pasture in late April and herbage intake was estimated in June in steers of a mean live weight (± S.D.) of 264 ± 14 kg and 185 ± 25 kg for Danish Friesian and Danish Jersey respectively. Faeces and herbage samples were analysed for alkanes to estimate herbage dry matter intake, dry matter digestibility (DMD) and botanical composition of intake. The weight gains at the time of herbage intake estimation in June (kg/day) were 1.142 ± 265 kg/day and 0.927 ± 168 kg/day for Danish Friesian and Danish Jersey respectively. Daily herbage intake (kg dry matter (DM)) estimated...

Effects of grazing system on production and parasitism of dairy breed heifers and steers grazing wet marginal grasslands Organic Eprints
Kristensen, T.; Thamsborg, S.M.; Andersen, H.R.; Søegaard, K.; Nielsen, L..
Production and endoparasitism in first grazing season of Holstein heifers and steers were investigated in two grazing seasons, at low-lying peaty soil. In year 2000, forty animals were included in a 2 x 2 factorial, replicated experiment with two sexes (steers vs. heifers) and two stocking rates (SR): normal vs. low (840 vs. 420 kg live weight per ha at turn out) in a set stocking grazing system. Mean grass height over the entire season were 6.3 ± 4.8 cm (mean ± s.d.) at normal SR and 9.8 ± 6.1 cm at low SR. Mean daily live weight gain during grazing was significantly (P < 0.001) lower at normal SR (256 ± 147 g) compared to low (468 ± 142 g) but sex did not significantly affect the daily gain. Serum-pepsinogen levels, indicating uptake of...

Influence of chicory roots (Cichorium intybus L) on boar taint in entire male and female pigs Organic Eprints
Hansen, L.L.; Mejer, H.; Thamsborg, S.M.; Burne, D.V.; Roepstorff, A.; Karlsson, A.H.; Hansen-Møller, J.; Jensen, M.T.; Tuomola, M..
Boar taint is an off-flavour of pork caused primarily by a microbial breakdown product, skatole and a testicular steroid, androstenone. As skatole is produced in the large intestine from tryptophan, it is possible that some "bioactive" ingredients could modify protein fermentation and, in the process, diminish boar taint. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of inulin-rich chicory roots (Cichorium intybus L.) on boar taint. In the first of three trials individually penned, entire males and females were given an organic concentrate in which 0·25 of the daily energy intake was replaced with crude chicory roots for 9 or 4 weeks prior to slaughter. In the second trial, entire male pigs were given diets that included, either crude chicory roots,...

Influence of different forages on gastrointestinal namatode infections in grazing lambs Organic Eprints
Thamsborg, S.M.; Mejer, H.; Bandier, M.; Larsen, M..
Nematode infections of sheep may be influenced by secondary compounds in the diet, e.g. condensed tannins. A study was performed with 7 groups of lambs experimentally infected with Teladorsagia circumcincta and Trichostronglylus vitrinus. All groups were grazed on clean clover-grass pasture and then moved to paddocks with bioactive forages with either sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) (groups Pre-S and Post-S), chicory (Cichorium intybus, cv. Grasslands Puna) (Pre-C and Post-C) or clover-grass as reference (Pre-G and Post-G). Pre-groups were infected before the move to bioactive forages, whereas all Post-groups were infected after the move. Group Pre-ctrl. was slaughtered for worm counts at the time of the move while the other groups were slaughtered after...

Development and Daily Management of an Explicit Strategy of Nonuse of Antimicrobial Drugs in Twelve Danish Organic Dairy Herds Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Bennedsgaard, T.W.; Klaas, I.C.; Nissen, T.B.; Thamsborg, S.M.; Østergaard, S..
Promotion of animal health and well-being at the individual animal and herd level is an important goal in organic farming. At the same time, chemical products affecting the natural balance among living organisms are prohibited in all areas of the organic farm. From an animal welfare point of view, however, no animal must suffer. Therefore, veterinary drugs are allowed under the European Union’s regulations for organic farming, despite the fact that they are powerful cell toxins affecting both pathogenic and necessary bacteria, and as such in organic terminology, are regarded as “chemical” or “artificial” products. In this article, we present and discuss interviews with 12 Danish organic dairy producers who claim that minimized use or nonuse of...

Animal Health and Welfare during transition to organic dairy production: problems, priorities and perspectives Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Alban, L.; Mogensen, L; Thamsborg, S.M.; Kristensen, E.S..
During the past few years, organic dairy farming has grown dramatically in Denmark. Consequently, an increasing number of people are encountering this method of production for the first time. Amongst these, many veterinarians have suddenly had to deal with organic herds in their home district, and, meeting examples of poor animal welfare, they have recently started to express some concerns. Against this background, a so-called “Synthesis of Knowledge” project was initiated to examine the health and welfare of dairy cattle and the use of medication in the transition to organic production. The aim of the project was to investigate associated problems from the point of view of the dairy herd. Based on qualitative research interviews with vets and...

Spolorm er en udfordring for økosvin Organic Eprints
Mejer, H.; Serup, T.; Thamsborg, S.M..
