Vertical export flux of metals in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Heimbuerger, Lars-eric; Migon, Christophe; Losno, Rémi; Miquel, Juan-carlos; Thibodeau, Benoit; Stabholz, Marion; Dufour, Aurelie; Leblond, Nathalie.
We examined metal (Al, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) and particulate organic carbon (OC) concentrations of the marine vertical export flux at the DYFAMED time-series station in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. We present here the first data set of natural and anthropogenic metals from sediment trap moorings deployed at 1000 m-depth between 2003 and 2007 at the DYFAMED site. A highly significant correlation was observed between most metal concentrations, whatever the nature and emission source of the metal. Cu, Zn and Cd exhibit different behaviors, presumably due to their very high solubility and complexation with organic ligands. The observed difference of atmospheric and marine fluxes in terms of temporal variability and elemental...

Natural and anthropogenic trace metals in sediments of the Ligurian Sea (Northwestern Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Heimbuerger, Lars-eric; Cossa, Daniel; Thibodeau, Benoit; Khripounoff, Alexis; Mas, Virginie; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Schmidt, Sabine; Migon, Christophe.
The magnitude and the chronology of anthropogenic impregnation by Hg and other trace metals of environmental concern (V, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, Cd and Pb, including its stable isotopes) in the sediments are determined at the DYFAMED station, a site in the Ligurian Sea (Northwestern Mediterranean) chosen for its supposed open-sea characteristics. The DYFAMED site (VD) is located on the right levee of the Var Canyon turbidite system, at the end of the Middle Valley. In order to trace the influence of the gravity current coming from the canyon on trace metal distribution in the sediment, we studied an additional sediment core (VA) from a terrace of the Var Canyon, and material collected in sediment traps at the both sites at 20 m above sea bottom. The patterns...

Twentieth century warming in deep waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence: A unique feature of the last millennium ArchiMer
Thibodeau, Benoit; De Vernal, Anne; Hillaire-marcel, Claude; Mucci, Alfonso.
The impact of human activities on Earth's climate is still subject to debate and the pattern of a sharp recent global temperature increase contrasting with much lesser variable temperatures during preceding centuries has often been challenged, partly due to the lack of unquestionable evidence. In this paper, oxygen isotope compositions of benthic foraminifer shells recovered from sediments of the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary and the Gulf are used to reconstruct temperature changes in a water mass originating from similar to 400 m deep North Atlantic waters. The data demonstrate that the 1.7 +/- 0.3 degrees C warming measured during the last century corresponds to a delta(18)O shift of 0.4 +/- 0.05 parts per thousand, encompassing the temperature effect and...

Surface nitrate utilization in the Bering sea since 180 kA BP: Insight from sedimentary nitrogen isotopes ArchiMer
Riethdorf, Jan-rainer; Thibodeau, Benoit; Ikehara, Minoru; Nuernberg, Dirk; Max, Lars; Tiedemann, Ralf; Yokoyama, Yusuke.
We present high-resolution records of sedimentary nitrogen (delta N-15(bulk)) and carbon isotope ratios (delta C-13(bulk)) from piston core S0201-2-85KL located in the western Bering Sea. The records reflect changes in surface nitrate utilization and terrestrial organic matter contribution in submillennial resolution that span the last 180 kyr. The delta N-15(bulk) record is characterized by a minimum during the penultimate interglacial indicating low nitrate utilization (similar to 62-80%) despite the relatively high export production inferred from opal concentrations along with a significant reduction in the terrestrial organic matter fraction (m(terr)). This suggests that the consumption of the nitrate pool at our site was incomplete and even more...
