Spatial variation of metal bioaccumulation in the hydrothermal vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus ArchiMer
Cosson, R; Thiebaut, E; Company, R; Castrec Rouelle, M; Colaco, A; Martins, I; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Bebianno, M.
The variability of the bioaccumulation of metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) was extensively studied in the mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus from five hydrothermal vent sites inside three main vent fields of increasing depth along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: Menez Gwen, Lucky Strike and Rainbow. Metal bioaccumulation varied greatly between vent fields and even between sites inside a vent field with B. azoricus showing a great capacity to accumulate metals. The bioaccumulation of these metals also varied significantly among tissues. The main target was the gills where metals were mainly associated with soluble compounds whereas in the digestive gland they were mainly associated with insoluble compounds. Storage of metals under insoluble forms in B. azoricus seems...

Marine Ecosystem Services Assessment to Support Marine Management, from Theory to Practice ArchiMer
Vaschalde, D; Bailly, Denis; Cabral, Pedro; Charles, M; Daures, Fabienne; Davoult, D; Dedieu, K; Foucher, Eric; Guyader, Olivier; Laurans, Martial; Le Mao, Patrick; Le Niliot, P; Levrel, Harold; Martin, Jean Christophe; Marzin, Anahita; Mongruel, Remi; Morisseau, F; Schoenn, Jennifer; Thiebaut, E; Vanhoutte Brunier, Alice.
While economic valuation of ecosystem services (ES) is widely acknowledged as a tool to support decision-making processes, studies have also shown that there exists a literature blindspot on the effective use of economic valuation (Laurans et al. 2013; Marco ne and Mongruel 2014). The VALMER project seeks to bridge this gap between theory and practice by looking at how ecosystem services assessment (ESA) can support marine management and planning. Natural scientists, economists and marine environment managers from various institutions undertook ESAs in six pilot sites over the two sides of the Channel. The objectives of this paper are to share some results of two French ESAs, and to discuss issues and perspectives of ESAs from a marine management...

Community structure and temperature dynamics within a mussel assemblage on the Southern East Pacific Rise ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Walter, Cecile; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Brind'Amour, Anik; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Briand, Patrick; Fabri, Marie-claire; Van Gaever, S; Vanreusel, A; Bachraty, Charleyne; Thiebaut, E.
The composition, biomass and diversity of the fauna in a Bathymodiolus thermophilus mussel assemblage colonizing diffuse flow areas on the SEPR is described and compared with biological characteristics of other hydrothermal assemblages. The spatio-temporal dynamics of temperatures over fine scales within the mussel habitat are characterized using newly-developed statistical approaches. Temperature data obtained from two adjacent habitats (a cirriped assemblage and a bare substratum) are compared. The results of the temperature data show that the mean temperature and the temperature variations were significantly higher in the mussel assemblage (mean temperature: 4.12 +/- 1.85 degrees C) in comparison with 2.40 +/- 0.14 degrees C in the cirriped assemblage...

A modelling study of the respective role of hydrodynamic processes and larval mortality on larval dispersal and recruitment of benthic invertebrates: example of Pectinaria koreni (Annelida : Polychaeta) in the Bay of Seine (English Channel) ArchiMer
Ellien, C; Thiebaut, E; Dumas, Franck; Salomon, Jean-claude; Nival, Paul.
The dispersal of Pectinaria koreni larvae released from the eastern Bay of Seine (English Channel) was studied using a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model which integrates tides, wind-driven currents and eddy diffusion, in order to examine the influence of environmental forcing and mortality on larval population dynamics. A broad agreement between predicted larval dispersal for two spawning events observed in 1987 and field data suggests that numerical modelling may be useful to analyse processes involved in the transport and the dynamics of larval populations. Larval mortality may be as important as hydrodynamic processes on larval losses for the adult population. Tides and eddy diffusion had some effects on larval dispersal, but wind forcing and the...

Sharp genetic break between Atlantic and English Channel populations of the polychaete Pectinaria koreni, along the North coast of France ArchiMer
Jolly, Mt; Jollivet, D; Gentil, F; Thiebaut, E; Viard, F.
This study uses enzymatic and mitochondrial genes to infer the relative importance of historical processes and contemporary hydrodynamic features on the observed patterns of genetic structure in subdivided populations of Pectinaria koreni (Polychaeta: Pectinariidae) along the coasts of Brittany and the English Channel. Nucleotide sequence variation of a 603-bp fragment of the mtDNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene revealed a surprisingly deep phylogeographic break of about 16% divergence separating the Brittany and Channel populations, which coincides with a biogeographic boundary along the western coast of Brittany. Deep sequence divergence with fixed haplotype differences and the inversion of allele frequencies at two enzyme loci suggests the occurrence...

The presence of Melinna palmata (Annelida : Polychaeta) and Ensis directus (Mollusca : Bivalvia) related to sedimentary changes in the Bay of Seine (English Channel, France) ArchiMer
Dauvin, J; Ruellet, T; Thiebaut, E; Gentil, F; Desroy, Nicolas; Janson, A; Duhamel, S; Jourde, J; Simon, S.
Since late 1990s the annelid polychaete Melinna palmata and the mollusc bivalve Ensis directus have been collected in the eastern part of the Bay of Seine (English Channel), indicating changes in the benthic communities. Melinna palmata was never collected prior to 2002, whereas it was reported in the muddy fine sands of the western part of the Channel, along the French (e.g. Bay of Cherbourg) and southern UK (e.g. Southampton Waters) coasts. Ensis directus was first reported in 1998 and now appears to be well implanted, given the abundant population collected in 2006. The colonization of Melina palmata seems to be a consequence of recent increase of the fine sediment in the eastern part of the Bay, while that of the invasive Ensis directus seems more...

Role of physico-chemical environment on gastropod assemblages at hydrothermal vents on the East Pacific Rise (13 degrees N/EPR) ArchiMer
Matabos, M; Le Bris, Nadine; Pendlebury, S; Thiebaut, E.
Deep-sea hydrothermal vents display extreme and highly variable environmental conditions that are expected to be among the most important factors structuring associated benthic populations and communities. We tested this assumption, focusing Oil the distribution of gastropods, as well as on the demographic population structure and reproductive biology of one dominant gastropod species ill zones characterized by alvinellid polychaetes and vcstimentiferan tubeworms. A total Of 14 biological samples from both types of habitats were collected at three sites oil the East Pacific Rise 13 degrees N vent field in May 2002. At all vents except one, the physico-chemical environment was described in two steps: (1) pH, total sulphide and reduced iron concentrations...
