Can Faculty Change Initial Impressions on Student Evaluations of Teaching? AgEcon
Pruitt, J. Ross; Dicks, Michael R.; Tilley, Daniel S..
Expectations of a course and instructor are formed prior to engagement in the course which affect learning. By understanding the factors that are involved in setting these expectations, instruction and student learning may be improved. This paper seeks to determine if student expectations set the basis for course and instructor appraisal and what factors affect these expectations or changes from expectations. Results indicate that while instructor appraisal does not change over the course of the semester, variables related to instructor appraisal do change. How worthwhile students view the course can also positively or negatively impact overall course appraisal.

Determinants of Students’ First Impressions of Instructors and Courses AgEcon
Dicks, Michael R.; Pruitt, J. Ross; Tilley, Daniel S..
Students evaluated instructors and courses in the first two weeks of the fall semester to determine the factors that form impressions in the early stages of the semester. Results indicate differences exist between upper and lower division courses with presentation of material and perceived workload as key factors that students use to form first impressions.

Consumer Response to Genetically Modified Foods AgEcon
Brant, Molly; Tilley, Daniel S.; Mowen, John C..
The consumer trait and characteristic identification, and corresponding relationship to the genetically modified food product's negative reactions was determined from a 354 respondent, 130 item mailed survey. Location Patterns of Confectionery Manufacturers in a Post NAFTA Environment AgEcon
Pruitt, J. Ross; Tilley, Daniel S..
Changes in international trade agreements while retaining protectionist sugar policies have led to the opportunity for confectionery manufacturers to relocate to take advantage of favorable international trade policies. Results suggest that NAFTA did not have a significant impact on location decisions of confectionery manufacturers in the U.S.

Impacts of U.S. Sugar Policy and the North American Free Trade Agreement in North American Sugar Containing Products AgEcon
Pruitt, J. Ross; Tilley, Daniel S..
Sugar is one of the most protected agricultural commodities in the United States and other countries around the world through the use of production allotments, preferential marketing agreements, and tariffs. These protectionist measures lead to increased input costs for manufacturers of candies and soft drinks. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has in part altered the nature of sugar trade throughout the North American continent. This paper presents a game theoretical Cournot model which illustrates how trade in sugar containing products and the location of sugar containing product manufacturers in North America is likely to be impacted by the combined effects of U.S. sugar policy and NAFTA. Current international agreements which affect...

An Assessment of the Economic Impact of Firms Assisted By the Oklahoma Food and Agricultural Products Center AgEcon
Ulmer, Ann; Holcomb, Rodney B.; Woods, Michael D.; Willoughby, Charles V.; Tilley, Daniel S..
The evolution of value-added centers at land-grant universities, along with the recent development of numerous Ag Innovation Centers, has been viewed as a sign of a shifting emphasis to value-added agriculture research and technical assistance efforts. The entities that fund these centers, be they state or federal government, have a vested interest in the economic impacts of these centers. However, evaluating the efforts of a public good is not always an easy task. An economic-impact study of the Oklahoma Food and Agricultural Products Center (FAPC) was conducted to assess the total economic impacts of the firms assisted by the FAPC on Oklahoma's economy. A telephone survey was used to collect the necessary data and IMPLAN was used to estimate direct,...

CATFISH PRODUCER HARVEST RESPONSE TO PRODUCTION AND ASYMMETRIC PRICE RISK AgEcon
Branch, William; Tilley, Daniel S..
Harvest response to production and asymmetric price risk was analyzed using an ordinary least squares model. Statistically significant responses to production-quality and output price risk were indicated. Results suggest that alternative pricing strategies designed to reduce risk may alter harvest response and decrease month to month harvest variability.

FEASIBILITY OF AN OKLAHOMA FRESH GREENS AND COWPEAS PACKING COOPERATIVE AgEcon
Nkengoum, Germain P.; Holcomb, Rodney B.; Kahn, Brian A.; Tilley, Daniel S..
Oklahoma's green producers are not benefiting from a growing fresh market. In order to seize the opportunities offered by the growing fresh market for leafy greens, investment in packing facilities have been evaluated. To make use of these facilities during summer months, the addition of a cowpea shelling enterprise is considered. A business plan for a new generation cooperative is estimated using an updated version of "The Packing Simulation Model" (PACKSIM) The business associates PACKSIM with @RISK®, to incorporate risks in the financial analysis.

CARIBBEAN DEMAND OF U.S. AND REST-OF-THE-WORLD STARCHY FOOD (WHEAT, RICE, CORN, AND FRESH POTATOES): A RESTRICTED SOURCE DIFFERENTIATED ALMOST IDEAL DEMAND SYSTEM AgEcon
Dameus, Alix; Tilley, Daniel S.; Brorsen, B. Wade.
This study provides elasticity estimates of the Caribbean demand for U. S. and Rest-of-the-World starchy foods (unmilled wheat and flour, rice, corn and fresh potatoes) using the Restricted Source Differentiated Almost Ideal Demand System (RSDAIDS) model. Caribbean per capita import demand curves for U.S. and Rest-of-the-World (ROW) are own-price unitary elastic for U. S. wheat, and own-price inelastic for U.S. rice and ROW wheat and rice. The implication is that reductions by any means in U. S. or ROW export prices of wheat and rice will increase U.S. or ROW exported quantities in the Caribbean, while at the same time securing food security through import quantity in the Caribbean. Wheat is not produced in the Caribbean. U. S. wheat price policy oriented...

Innovation is critical to the survival of agricultural businesses in the U.S. yet few universities have classes in their curricula that focus on innovation and innovation management. Innovation includes developing new processes and concepts and taking products based on those ideas to market. By its nature, innovation generally involves technical components, market assessment, business analysis, and implementation strategies that include marketing campaigns to a target market. As a result, if innovation is going to be experientially taught to students, the class will likely need to include concepts from multiple disciplines. The objectives of this paper are to present an outline of capstone/senior design classes designed to cause students to learn...
