This article examines farmers’ assessment of the effectiveness of cooperatives as compared with proprietary firms in providing goods and services. The areas of consideration were marketing, market share, business functions, service, stability, and public involvement. Farmers indicated that cooperatives’ greatest advantages were in the areas of service and public involvement. Respondents indicated that cooperatives were more willing to provide low profit products and services, establish programs that best met needs, and provide low profit products and services, establish programs that best met needs, and provide a more dependable source of supplies and services. Delaware consumers were surveyed to obtain information about package size preferences for fresh beef and pork products. A chi-square and gamma analysis was made and age was found to be significant and positively correlated to the size of package chosen for various roasts and flank steak. Age and preferred package size was negatively correlated for ground beef, sirloin steak, spareribs, and pork chops. The larger the family the greater the tendency to buy larger packages of ground beef and roasts, as well as spareribs and pork chops. Those with higher incomes tended to purchase larger steaks. Females showed preferences for smaller packages while males preferred larger packages.

THE SINGLE INDEX MARKET MODEL IN AGRICULTURE AgEcon

This study illustrates the differences in empirical results due to data measurements and estimating procedures when applying the single index market model in agriculture. Gross and net return betas along with systematic and unsystematic risk proportions are estimated and found to be different. The stochastic coefficients model is used to show the difference in beta-risk estimates compared with the traditional fixed coefficients OLS procedure. A third estimating technique, weighted least squares/Prais Winsten method, is also proposed.

Historically, Jordan's traditional markets for fresh produce have been the Persian Gulf countries. However, these exports have declined in recent years and new markets in Europe have been tapped. One of the main constraints to expanding the European market is the lack of quality-oriented packing houses in Jordan. This study considers the feasibility of a vegetable packing house designed to meet the quality requirements of the European market.
