Analysis of pig meat production with respect to different housing systems of pig AgEcon
Gajcevic, Z.; Kralik, G.; Tolusic, Zoltan; Margeta, V.; Kralik, Igor.
The research focused on two production systems of fattening pigs: conventional system (housing on cross - barred floor) and ecological system (housing on deep litter). Favorable climatic conditions for pig meat production, possibilities to produce cheaper food of better quality and great amounts of litter, are a good basis for making ecological pig production widely accepted by family farms. Ecological aspect of such production of pigs, along with its economic analysis will be key factors, which will influence pig producers in their choice of the most suitable technological solution. In comparison to the conventional way of keeping pigs, main advantages of pig housing on deep litter are cheaper building and equipping of pens, better effect on health...

Effect of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy on Consumption and Beef Meat Market in Croatia AgEcon
Mijic, P.; Tolusic, Zoltan; Rimac, D..
Occurrence of cattle disease known as Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has caused great fluctuations in production and consumption of beef meat in the European Union. Croatia does not have enough cattle to meet demands of domestic market. However, there is not one case of BSE in cattle reported in Croatia to date. This fact can be used as an advantage on the beef meat market, presupposing that Croatia has implemented quality programs to increase number of cattle. Research results show that 70% of examinees consume beef at least once a week up to several times a month, and 70.5% have not reduced beef consumption after the disease occurred.

Importance of standardizing raw milk quality for the enhancement of Croatian market competitiveness AgEcon
Tolusic, Zoltan; Mijic, P.; Tolusic, M..
In the European Union member states (EU), it is necessary to evaluate hygienic condition of milk in order to determine milk price. Similar requirement was set by the Republic of Croatia in 2000. The Rulebook defines minimal quality criteria that fresh raw milk must have in order to be purchased. Upon completion of analysis, milk is classified into quality classes, each having a defined price. Increased value of somatic cell count (SCC) (higher than 400.000/ml) and MO (higher than 100.000/ml) directly decreases the raw milk price, while higher content of fat and protein causes its increase. Since the system of market milk price formation was established, producers have been stimulated to produce milk of higher quality: in a total of milk being purchased,...
