Bioko is the largest of a chain of volcanic islands in the Gulf of Guinea (3° 48' N - 3° 12' N and 8° 25' E - 8° 57' E) (see Figure 1A). The island has 150 km of coastline which is mostly rocky, the only long sandy beaches (totalling 19km) are found on the southern coast (Butynski & Koster 1989). Ureca, a small village of around 100 inhabitants, is the only habitation in this area. |
