Influence of the aspect ratio on the behaviour of an undulating membrane tidal energy converter ArchiMer
Moreau, Martin; Trasch, Martin; Delacroix, Sylvain; Germain, Gregory.
An experimental study of a 1/20th scale undulating membrane tidal energy converter (UMTEC) based on EEL Energy’s device is presented to assess the impact of the membrane's aspect ratio on its behaviour. The aim of this work is to study 3D effects on the machine to optimise the energy extraction. Five aspect ratios from 0.26 to 0.57 are tested at constant length, keeping other geometric parameters constant too. The mechanical energy of the membrane is conveyed above the free surface by a vertical cogwheel/chain assembly to be converted by an electric generator. After describing the experimental set-up, results are presented according to the reduced flow speed. Undulation dynamics and power conversion are analysed. This study highlights the effects of an...

Power estimates of an undulating membrane tidal energy converter ArchiMer
Trasch, Martin; Deporte, Astrid; Delacroix, Sylvain; Drevet, Jean-baptiste; Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory.
An experimental study of an undulating membrane based on the Eel Energy device is presented in this paper. This system uses interaction between a semi-rigid plate and an axial flow to generate undulation. At full scale, the deformation of the structure is then converted into electrical power using linear electromagnetic generators. In order to simulate the power take-off on a 1/20th scale prototype, hydraulic dampers are located all over the length of the device. The dampers have non-linear behaviour. A representative damping parameter have been introduced to study their impact. Results are presented in function of fluid velocity and damping adjustment. Undulation mode, frequency and forces on the structure are described. Results show that fluid velocity...

Caractérisation expérimentale et numérique du comportement hydrodynamique d’une hydrolienne à membrane ondulante ArchiMer
Trasch, Martin.
The thesis presented in this document deals with the caracterisation of the behaviour of an undulating membrane tidal energy converter. This kind of device uses the flutter instabilities occurring between a semi-rigid pre-strained membrane and a fluid flow in order to convert the sea currents energy. Above a certain critical flow speed, the structure ondulates, thus activating the linear converters fixed on it. In order to study this system, an experimental model is developped and tested in a flume tank. The power conversion system is simulated by hydraulic dampers. The membrane’s dynamics is analysed in many configurations through trajectory and force measurements, and leads to a parametric study. More realistic flow conditions are also studied, such as...

Analytical linear modelization of a buckled undulating membrane tidal energy converter ArchiMer
Trasch, Martin; Deporte, Astrid; Delacroix, Sylvain; Germain, Gregory; Drevet, Jean-baptiste.
This paper presents an analytical linear model developed to study the behaviour of a buckled membrane tidal energy converter. The Euler beam theory and the elongated body theory are used for the fluid structure interaction formulation. The effect of electromechanical converters used to convert the undulating motion into electrical energy is reproduced by adding a term equivalent to viscous material damping. The influence of compression force, flaps and hanging conditions is studied, as well as the effects of simulated power take-off through internal damping. The system's behaviour is characterized by undulating mode, critical flow velocity, motion frequency and amplitude. The model shows good agreement in terms of frequency and satisfactory results for the...
