Trace elements in basalts from 23°n and 36°n in the atlantic ocean: fractional crystallization, partial melting, and heterogeneity of the upper mantle ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri; Treuil, M.; Joron, J.l..
From a study of first-transition series trace elements and low-partition-coefficient trace elements or so-called hygromagmatophyle elements (Treuil and Varet, 1973; Treuil and Joron, 1976), we will try to define the relative importance of the three fundamental parameters- mantle source composition, extent of partial melting, and crystal fractionation-which bear on the formation of basalts recovered during Leg 45.We relate the presented data to the results of shipboard study (Chapters 7 and 8, this volume) and then give a tentative interpretation, taking into account our present knowledge of the behavior of trace elements during magmatic processes of FAMOUS and Leg 37 results. The petrology, geochemistry, and mineralogy of north atlantic basalts : a discussion based on ipod leg 49 ArchiMer
Wood, D.a.; Varet, J.; Bougault, Henri; Corre, O.; Joron, J.l.; Treuil, M.; Bizouard, H.; Norry, M.j.; Hawkesworth, C.j.; Roddick, J.c..
Whole-rock geochemical data were obtained for 178 samples selected from the petrologically freshest parts of most of the flow units recovered from the nine holes. These data include 170 major element analyses (XRF) and 174 trace-element analyses (XRF and INAA). We include representative microprobe analyses of the primary minerals and fresh basaltic glasses (where present) in 40 selected samples. We also present 87Sr/88Sr ratios for 14 samples selected from the holes at 63"N. These analytical data, together with petrographic data obtained from the study of some 500 thin sections, have enabled us to establish a detailed lithostratigraphy for each basement section. The primordial chondritic nature and large-scale heterogeneities in the mantle: evidence from high and low partition coefficient elements in oceanic basalts ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri; Joron, J.l.; Treuil, M..
Large-scale heterogeneities in the mantle are investigated through trace elements measured in oceanic basalts from different locations in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The study relies upon the physico-chemical properties of the elements and their classification according to their partition coefficients. High partition coefficient elements (Co, Ni; Cr) have concentrations in peridotite that are not sensitive to solidliquid equilibrium (partial melting); the mantle should therefore be homogeneous with respect to these elements. The ratios of elements that have equal or very similar low partition coefficients (Y/Tb, Zr/Hf and Nb/Ta) are constant in all samples studied, despite their large concentration range. These ratios are equal to chondritic ratios and...

Tholeiites, basaltic andesites, and andesites from leg 60 sites : geochemistry, mineralogy, and low partition coefficient elements ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri; Maury, R.c.; El Azzouzi, M.; Joron, J.l.; Cotten, J.; Treuil, M..
This chapter presents major oxide and trace element determinations of igneous whole-rock compositions from sites drilled during Leg 60 and electron microprobe mineral and glass analyses of samples from Sites 454 and 458. Interarc basin basalts from the Mariana Trough (Sites 454 and 456) are similar in all respects to depleted mid-ocean ridge basalts. Basaltic andesites and andesites from Site 458 (Mariana fore-arc region) are more depleted than mid-ocean ridge basalts and show different geochemical behavior for Zr-, Hf, and Ti when compared on an extended Coryell- Masuda plot. Mid-Atlantic Ridge : zero-age geochemical variations between Azores and 22°N ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri; Treuil, M..
The MAPCO cruise of RV J. Charcot sampled zero-age basalts along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge from the Azores Triple Junction to 24 N. Preliminary shipboard geochemical analyses together with earlier data show that some trace elements are not randomly distribued along the ridge. The latitude of the Haves transform delineate two regions of rare earth element distribution : north from Hayes, is flat to light rare (or equivalent) enriched : south from Hayes, is light rare earth (or equivalent) depleted. These findings indicate large scale heterogeneity of the upper mantle. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Leg 55, emperor seamounts : trace elements in transitional tholeiites, alkali basalts, and hawaiites-mantle homogeneity or heterogeneity and magmatic processes ArchiMer
Cambon, Pierre; Bougault, Henri; Joron, J.l.; Treuil, M..
Three seamounts of the Emperor Seamount chain were sampled during Leg 55: Ojin seamount, Hole 430A, 37° 59.29 N 170° 35.86 E Nintoku seamount, Hole 432A, 41° 20.03 N 170° 22.74 E Suiko seamount, Hole 433A, 44° 46.60 N 170° 01.26 E Hole 433C, 44° 46.63 N 170° 01.23 E Oceanites, ankaramites, transitional tholeiites, alkali basalts, and hawaiites were recovered from these seamounts. The purpose of this study is the fractionation of trace elements according to their physicochemical properties and partition coefficient classification; fractionation of the elements observed in these samples is compared with their fractionation in mid-oceanic ridge tholeiites. Some preliminary conclusions are presented with regard to mantle heterogeneity or homogeneity and magmatic...

Trace elements : fractional crystallization and partial melting process, heterogeneity of upper mantle material ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri; Cambon, Pierre; Joron, J.; Treuil, M..
From a study of trace elements, including first transition series elements and low parition coefficient elements or so-called hygromagmatophyle elements (Treuil and Varet, 1973 ; Treuil and Joron, 1976), we will try to establish the three fundamental parameters (mantle material, partial melting, and crystallization) which influence the formation of basalts recovered during Leg 46. Data are presented in connection with shipboard study ; a tentative interpretation is given taking into account our present knowledge of the behavior of trace elements during magmatic processes and comparing the results of FAMOUS, Leg 37 and Leg 45. We ask the reader to look at our Leg 45 report (Bougault. et al., 1978) to gain information about analytical procedures and...
