Integration of biological mite control into outdoor strawberry production: a matter of efficacy and economy Organic Eprints
Tuovinen, Tuomo.
Ten years experiences in experimental and practical fields prove that effective control of strawberry mite can be achieved by inundative introductions of the predatory mite Amblyseius cucumeris. Lately, Neoseiulus barkeri has been included to experiments compare its efficacy especially in higher strawberry mite densities.

Threats of emerging pests due to a warming climate in Finland Organic Eprints
Tuovinen, Tuomo; Lindqvist, Isa.
The total strawberry acreage in Finland (3225 ha, 2008) is almost entirely attributed to outdoor cultivation. The prevailing weather directly influences both the quality and quantity of the yield. An increasing demand for quality berries forces growers to consider cultivation in polythene tunnels. In addition to cultivation changes, new plant protection challenges are also expected to arise as a result of a warming climate.

Everbearing strawberry cultivars in tunnels and outdoor production Organic Eprints
Parikka, Päivi; Tuovinen, Tuomo; Lindqvist, Isa; Kemppainen, Riitta; Hietaranta, Tarja; Karhu, Saila.
Studies on the production of everbearing strawberry cultivars were started at MTT Plant Production Research in 2007. MTT Horticulture makes tunnel and open field trials to study the growth, yield and overwintering of cultivars in northern conditions. Resistance to crown rot is being tested at MTT Plant Protection as part of cultivar studies.

Heating of strawberry plants for elimination of strawberry tarsonemid mite - possibilities and risks Organic Eprints
Tuovinen, Tuomo; Lindqvist, Isa; Karhu, Saila.
Hot water treatment of strawberry runners was applied already in the 1950's to control strawberry tarsonemid mite Phytonemus pallidus ssp. fragariae and leaf nematodes Aphelenchoides spp. The hot water technique is effective and safe for cut runners when carefully applied.

Volatile emission from strawberry plants is induced by mite and leaf beetle feeding and methyl jasmonate Organic Eprints
Himanen, Sari; Nuotio, Netta-Leena; Vuorinen, Terhi; Tuovinen, Tuomo; Holopainen, Jarmo K..
We have studied the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from young strawberry plants, cultivars Polka and Honeoye, after feeding by several strawberry herbivores under laboratory conditions. VOC profile of strawberry plants is highly dominated by green leaf volatiles (GLVs), which are released also due to mechanical damage. Our results reveal that strawberry has potential for inducible VOC defence, and this encourages testing the attractiveness of these strawberry VOCs to predatory mites.

Biological control of the strawberry mite by using predatory mites Organic Eprints
Tuovinen, Tuomo.
Strawberry mite control by Neoseiulus cucumeris has proven economically feasible. To achieve a better integration of biocontrol with growing techniques and outdoor conditions development of alternative approaches by native phytoseiid species are required.

Black vine weevil and other wingless weevils: are there any effective conrol methods applicable in outdoor strawberry in Nordic countries? Organic Eprints
Lindqvist, Isa; Tuovinen, Tuomo.
The black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) is a common pest in Central Europe but rather new on outdoor crops in Finland. Spreading of enthomopathogenic nematodes against weevils by drip irrigation was tested at MTT during 2003-2004. The results proved that at least in small-scale use the nematodes were easily spread through the irrigation system into the field. We were not able to prove the efficiency of the nematodes against larvae because of too low level of both species populations in the experimental cages in the field.

Cropping system impact on soil quality determinants Organic Eprints
Vestberg, Mauritz; Kukkonen, Sanna; Saari, Kaisa; Uosukainen, Marjatta; Palojärvi, Ansa; Tuovinen, Tuomo; Vepsäläinen, Milja; Niemi, Maarit.
Worldwide interest in soil quality evaluation has increased rapidly throughout the past decade, prompting us to evaluate the long-term impact of four cropping systems on several biological, chemical and physical determinants of soil quality. We hypothesized that after 17 years several of the determinants would show significant differences between conventional cereal and low input/organic rotations. Four crop rotations were imposed on a silt soil from 1982 through 1999. Rotation A was a conventionally managed cereal rotation that received 100% of the recommended mineral fertilizer each year. Rotation B was also managed conventionally from 1982 until 1993, although it received only 50% of the recommended mineral fertilizer. From 1994 through 1999, rotation B...

Recorded and potential alien invertebrate pests in Finnish agriculture and horticulture Organic Eprints
Vänninen, Irene; Worner, Susan; Huusela-Veistola, Erja; Tuovinen, Tuomo; Nissinen, Anne; Saikkonen, Kari.
It is assumed that climate change will promote pest invasions and their establishment in new regions. We have updated the list of current alien invertebrate pest species in Finland and produced a list of potential new alien pests using a self-organizing map (SOM) that ranks species in terms of their risk of entry into Finland. The 76 pest species recorded included 66 insects, 5 nematodes, 2 mites and 3 slugs. Nearly half of the alien species appeared to have invaded Finland during the last 48 years. The SOM analysis is considered a viable tool for identification of potentially high-risk invasive pests from among the multitude of potential alien invaders, and represents a useful complement to local expert knowledge-based risk assessment of potentially...
