The effects of the 2003 CAP reform on the farmers’ decisions on whether to abandon their farming activity, how much to produce and what to produce are analyzed in the present paper. To this effect data collected for Hungarian, Dutch and Greek farmers on their perceptions about the reform and its effects, and on their production intentions is analyzed using discrete choice models under 3 alternative scenarios for the future produce prices. Total Factor Productivity Growth and the Environment: A Case for Green Growth Accounting AgEcon

We examine whether the use of the environment, proxied by CO2 emissions, as a factor of production contributes, in addition to conventional factors of production to output growth, and thus it should be accounted for in total factor productivity growth (TFPG) measurement and deducted from the .residual. A theoretical framework of growth accounting methodology with environment as a factor of production which is unpaid in the absence of environmental policy is developed. Efficiency in Damage Control Inputs: A Stochastic Production Frontier Approach AgEcon

The present paper extents the existing literature providing a theoretically consistent framework for measuring input-specific technical efficiency in damage control inputs within a stochastic production frontier model. The theoretical framework for modeling damage control agents is based on Fox and Weersink (1995) model specification that allows for increasing returns on damage control inputs. The empirical model accounts veterinary expenses as the damage control input and it is applied on a panel data set of sheep farms in Greece during the 1989-92 period. SEPARATING TECHNICAL CHANGE FROM TIME-VARYING TECHNICAL INEFFICIENCY IN THE ABSENCE OF DISTRIBUTIONAL ASSUMPTIONS AgEcon

This paper proposes an alternative approach for separating technical change from time-varying technical inefficiency. The approach uses the general index, developed by Baltagi and Griffin (1988), to model technical change along the production function, and a quadratic function of time trend, as in Cornwell, Schmidt and Sickles (1990), to capture the temporal pattern of technical inefficiency. In such a setting, all parameters associated with the rate of technical change and the temporal pattern of technical inefficiency are identified separately. Information Acquisition and Adoption of Organic Farming Practices AgEcon

This study offers an empirical framework for analyzing farmers' joint decisions to adopt organic farming practices and to seek technical (i.e., farming) information from various sources. To that end, a trivariate ordered probit model is specified and implemented in the case of organic land conversion in Crete, Greece. Findings suggest that the decisions of information acquisition and organic land conversion are indeed correlated, and different farming information sources play a complementary role. Structural policies improving the farmer's allocative ability are found to play an important role in encouraging organic farming adoption.

Empirical Evidence of Technical Efficiency Levels in Greek Organic and Conventional Farms AgEcon

The present study utilizes the stochastic production frontier approach in evaluating the technical efficiency rates achieved in four types of Greek organic and conventional farm operations, namely, olive oil-producing, cotton, raisin-producing, and grapes-for-wine producing farms. The empirical results are expected to illustrate possible differences in the technical efficiency scores between the two farming technologies, and provide empirical evidence which at least in the field of organic farming performance is scarce or even absent. Such assessments may also be helpful for pointing out purely economic advantages (or disadvantages) of organic farming, in addition to its environmental dimension, and formulating policies to improve its economic performance.

Output growth decomposition of the Greek olive-oil sector under technical and allocative inefficiencies, economies of scale and technical change, is performed. Parametric Measurement of Time-Varying Technical Inefficiency: Results from Competing Models AgEcon

This paper provides an empirical comparison of time-varying technical inefficiency measures obtained from the econometric estimation of different specifications of the stochastic production frontier model. Specifically, ten different frontier model specifications, which are most widely used in empirical applications, are estimated using a balanced panel data set from the Greek olive-oil sector, consisting of 100 farms observed during 1987-93 period. The empirical results indicate that both the magnitude and individual ranking of technical efficiency estimates differs considerably across models.

Evading Farm Support Reduction via Efficient Input Use: The Case of Greek Cotton Growers AgEcon

The present paper examines the importance that efficient resource use may have for cotton growers under the current EU policy regime. To that end, input-oriented technical and scale efficiency score for a sample of 172 cotton-growing farms are empirically quantified. The results suggest that cotton farms in the sample are not efficient mainly due to the nature of the policy regime governing the sector throughout EU. By becoming efficient, the co-responsibility levy will be reduced by 18.3% and farms may increase their profits by 50.1% on the average.

SELF-DUAL STOCHASTIC PRODUCTION FRONTIERS AND DECOMPOSITION OF OUTPUT GROWTH: THE CASE OF OLIVE-GROWING FARMS IN GREECE AgEcon

This paper provides a decomposition of output growth among olive-growing farms in Greece during the period 1987-1993 by integrating Bauer's (1990) and Bravo-Ureta and Rieger's (1991) approaches. The proposed methodology is based on the use of self-dual production frontier functions. Output growth is attributed to the size effect, technical change, changes in technical and input allocative inefficiency, and the scale effect. Empirical results indicate that the scale and the input allocative inefficiency effects, which were not taken into account in previous studies on output growth decomposition analysis, have caused a 7.3% slowdown and a 11.0% increase in output growth, respectively. ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY IN ORGANIC FARMING: EVIDENCE FROM COTTON FARMS IN VIOTIA, GREECE AgEcon

Using recent advances in the stochastic production frontier framework, this paper presents an empirical analysis of technical, allocative and economic efficiency of a sample of organic and conventional cotton farms located in Greece. The results suggest that both farm types in the sample examined are technically, allocatively and economically inefficient. Farmer's age and education and farm size are important factors in explaining differentials in efficiency estimates. Assessing the Perspectives of EU Cotton Farming: Technical and Scale Efficiencies of Greek Cotton Growers AgEcon

Utilizing the stochastic frontier approach, this paper estimates output and input-oriented technical and scale efficiency levels for a sample of cotton-growing farms in Thessaly, Greece. The empirical results suggest that Greek cotton farm operations are technically and scale inefficient. There is a considerable scope for improvement in resource use and thereby in farm income of cotton farms; Greek cotton farmers could reduce production costs by 20.4%, making more efficient utilization of the existing production technology. Factors responsible for the technical efficiency differentials observed among cotton-growers include the farmer's age and education as well as the farm's land fragmentation and output specialization.
