Dynamic of decapod crustacean larvae on the entrance of Guanabara bay BABT
Fernandes,Lohengrin Dias de Almeida; Bonecker,Sérgio Luiz Costa; Valentin,Jean Louis.
In the present study, we observed seasonal variations in the density of decapod larvae as well as changes in density related to diurnal and tidal cycles. Among the decapod larvae collected, portunids and grapsids were the most abundant, especially during nocturnal ebb tides and near the surface. The same results were obtained in late winter (September) and late summer (March). These results demonstrated a flow of decapod larvae from Guanabara Bay to adjacent coastal waters. Luciferid (Lucifer faxoni) was the only group with high densities during flood tides and we suggest this is an evidence of L. faxoni larvae entering Guanabara Bay in late winter. Probably these changes in distribution of Lucifer faxoni among winter and summer were related to...

Population dynamics of Pseudevadne tergestina (Branchiopoda: Onychopoda) in Guanabara Bay, Brazil BABT
Marazzo,Andrea; Valentin,Jean Louis.
Populations of Pseudevadne tergestina were studied in Guanabara Bay, southeastern Brazil, to assess temporal variations in density and population dynamics. Data on temperature, salinity and zooplankton samples were taken from the superficial water of a fixed station, every 3 - 4 days, from February 2 through August 1, 2000. The highest abundance of this species was observed in March, when densities varied widely, from 20 to 600 ind. m-3. Population parameters were calculated, such as birth rate (from 0.25 to 0.90 ind.-1.day-1), growth rate (from -1.30 to 2.09 day-1 ) and death rate ( from -1.6 to 1.9 day-1 ) Start of population could be attributed to the increase of temperature and to the hatching of resting eggs. The population collapsed in fall-winter,...

Distribution of HNA and LNA bacterial groups in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean BJM
Andrade,Luciana; Gonzalez,Alessandra M.; Rezende,Carlos Eduardo; Suzuki,Marina; Valentin,Jean Louis; Paranhos,Rodolfo.
Bacterioplankton was studied in a large area of Southwest Atlantic Ocean between 13 and 25ºS and 28 and 42ºW. Samples were collected in 108 stations at 20 m depth. Bacteria were enumerated by flow cytometry after nucleic acid staining with syto13 and two subgroups were differentiated: low nucleic acid content (LNA) and high nucleic acid content (HNA) bacteria. Total bacterial numbers varied from 0.37 to 5.53 10(5) cells mL-1. HNA cells represented 15 to 70% of the total number while LNA cells represented 30 to 85%. Heterotrophic bacterial production was determined by incorporation of tritiated leucine and ranged from 2.7 to 171.07 ng C L-1 h-1. No significant correlation was found between abundance and production. Nevertheless with support of multivariate...
