A closed culture system for the high density culturing of <i>Artemia spp.</i> in 300-liter tanks using a new formula of artificial seawater and micronized waste products from agricultural crops as food is described. Culture conditions are greatly improved by applying a new filter technique and an electronic transparency meter which controls food distributions automatically. A total volume of 6,000 liters of culture water recirculated over a rotating biological contactor, a cross-flow sieve and a plate separator at a flow rate of 3000 liters per hour.Production yields obtained with this culture system, when extrapolated to a 1 m³ tank, indicate that 50 g of brine shrimp cysts can be converted into 20 kg of fresh (wet dry) pre-adult... A research program was carried out to improve and facilitate rotifer (<i>Brachionus plicatilis</i>) culturing as well as to assure their optimal nutritional quality as a prey, concentrating on the development of a dry and complete rotifer diet that does not require the use of algae and does result in a HUFA rich <i>Brachionus</i>. The present poster provides results dealing with culture aspects and rotifer nutritional quality. Different diet compositions based on single cell proteins enriched with various nutritional additives were evaluated. Results obtained so far demonstrate that a selected formula of a combined culture and enrichment diet, that does not involve the use of microalgae at all, can be successfully used for growing... The cyst material was processed and used for the following characterization analyses: cyst and naupliar biometrics, cyst hatching characteristics, fatty acid pattern of the nauplii, nutritional value of the nauplii for mysid shrimp, naupliar growth rate and temperature resistance, mode of reproduction, and characterization of sibling species. The cross-breeding tests and cyst biometrics reveal that only <i>Artemia tunisiana</i> occurs in Tunisia. Although quality improvements may be expected through improved harvesting, Tunisian <i>Artemia</i> have acceptable hatching characteristics and are a good food for mysid shrimp.... Freshly hatched San Pablo Bay and Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-poor) and enriched meta-nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-enriched)were compared to reference <i>Artemia</i> nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-rich) as a food source for the larvae of the sea bass, <i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>. Significant differences in survival and biomass production between the treatments could be attributed to the omega-3-HUFA content of the food. A delayed mortality in fish larvae fed the Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> is suspected to be caused by a high level of alpha-BHC in this <i>Artemia</i> source. Growth was not significantly different between the treatments, most probably due to the large variation in growth...
