From total farm to household risk: implication for risk management AgEcon
de Mey, Yann; Wauters, Erwin; van Winsen, Frankwin; Vancauteren, Mark; Van Passel, Steven; Lauwers, Ludwig H..
Modeling the farm level impact of risk management programs, policies and instruments is traditionally been done on a farm-level basis. Hence, farm simulation models typically use the behavioural assumption of profit or utility maximization is risk aversion taken into account. However, abundant – albeit indirect – evidence from different literature sources suggest that minimization of household risk – being the chance of falling below a certain threshold level of household cash flow – might be more realistic behavioural assumption. In this paper, we present concepts of operational, financial, total farm and household risk. Further, using a stochastic simulation model on two typical Belgian dairy farms, we illustrate possible farmers responses in the...

MICROWAVE: A GENERIC FRAMEWORK FOR MICRO SIMULATIONBASED EX ANTE POLICY EVALUATION AgEcon
Wolfert, Jacques; Lepoutre, Jan; Dol, Wietse; Van Passel, Steven; van der Veen, Hennie B.; Bouma, Foppe.
This paper presents the MicroWave approach that has been developed to improve the process of modeling in the context of micro simulation. It leads to a more efficient model development, better quality of models and their output and improvement in knowledge management. A conceptual framework has been developed and translated into a hierarchical structure of GAMS program code. Besides, several software applications and other tools have been developed for support. These products are presented and some examples illustrate how MicroWave can be applied. MicroWave is especially useful in interdisciplinary research in which different persons are involved in the modeling process and when different models have to be combined.

Assessing farm sustainability with value oriented methods AgEcon
Van Passel, Steven.
Agricultural policy makers aim to combine strong economic performance with a sustainable use of natural resources. An important step is to move from trying to define sustainability towards developing concrete tools for measuring and promoting achievements in sustainability. Hence, sustainability assessment is inevitably based on strong simplifications both of the theoretical paradigm and of the characteristics of systems of concern. The most known approaches to assess sustainability performance are burden orientated: they assess the costs or potential harm of resource use. These burden-oriented approaches focus on the level of environmental impacts caused by an economic activity compared to another set of environmental impacts, while value-oriented impact...

Increase in milk price volatility experienced by Flemish dairy farmers: A change in risk profile AgEcon
van Winsen, Frankwin; Wauters, Erwin; Lauwers, Ludwig H.; de Mey, Yann; Van Passel, Steven; Vancauteren, Mark.
This paper reports on the increased volatility in the milk price received by Flemish dairy farmers and its consequence on the risk profile of selected Flemish dairy farms. The volatility of the milk price has doubled since January 2007. It is suggested that this increasing volatility could have a significant impact on the risk profile of dairy farms. Indeed our results show that the risk profile is changing depending on the volatility and average price for milk. However this change is not very substantial compared to some other subsectors. Also we show that in our case study of selected farms that if the milk price volatility doubles an average milk price increase of about 12% compensates for the increased volatility on return on assets. Finally this paper...

Exploring production-theoretical insights for analyzing trade-offs between economic performance and environmental pressure at firm level AgEcon
Van Meensel, Jef; Lauwers, Ludwig H.; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido; Van Passel, Steven.
The objective of this paper is to construct a framework for analyzing trade-offs between economic performance and environmental pressure at firm level. Based on a literature review, partially conflicting economic-environmental trade-off paradigms are structured and five necessary conditions for adequate trade-off analysis are put forward. These conditions are delimitating a clear system for which trade-offs are analyzed, assessing the direction of causality between economic performance and environmental pressure, allowing for firm-specific trade-off differences, comprehensiveness with respect to management activities that can be evaluated and flexibility to analyze trade-offs under different market and environmental regulation conditions. To deal with the...

Combining risk perception and risk attitude: A comprehensive individual risk behavior model AgEcon
van Winsen, Frankwin; Wauters, Erwin; Lauwers, Ludwig H.; de Mey, Yann; Van Passel, Steven; Vancauteren, Mark.
Although risk management in farming is a well-documented subject in scientific literature, this same literature is usually used only by other scientist and is not aiding individual farmers in their management. Risk perception and risk attitude are well described determinants of risk behaviour but rarely combined in an integrated approach for risk behaviour research. Furthermore in most literature risk attitude is taken as a given stable personality trait on which the optimal behaviour should be based. We argue that risk attitude can be manageable in order to derive optimal risk behaviour. Based on these findings we develop a comprehensive theoretical basic model on farmers risk behaviour. Furthermore a participatory approach involving the stakeholder, the...

Explaining Differences in Farm Sustainability: Evidence from Flemish Dairy Farms AgEcon
Van Passel, Steven; Mathijs, Erik; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
An important objective of European agricultural policy is to have a sustainable, efficient farming sector, which uses environmentally-friendly production methods. Agricultural policy makers aim to combine strong economic performance with a sustainable use of natural resources. There is thus a need for tools allowing quantification of farm sustainability as well as for empirical research assessing, analysing and explaining differences in farm sustainability. Using a large dataset of dairy farms, we apply the concept of sustainable value creation to benchmark farm sustainability performance. An effect model captures the determinants of the differences in sustainability among Flemish dairy farms. Our empirical model shows that both managerial and structural...

SUSTAINABLE EFFICIENCY OF FIRMS WHEN NEW SUSTAINABILITY TARGETS ARE INTRODUCED AgEcon
Mondelaers, Koen; Kuosmanen, Timo; Van Passel, Steven; Buysse, Jeroen; Lauwers, Ludwig H.; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
There is a high potential for simultaneously increasing sustainability of the earth system and economic development by removing inefficiencies currently present both at the production input and output side. In this paper a static view on sustainability is employed, by introducing capacity constraints as the boundaries above (or below) which the system cannot maintain its stable state. Currently these capacity constraints are often not respected. In this paper it is shown how the efficiency improvement pathway of an industry and the firms within it can be calculated to come to a sustainable, profit maximizing state, given the existence of these capacity constraints.
