The Advantages of Landsat 8-OLI-Derived Suspended Particulate Matter Maps for Monitoring the Subtidal Extension of Amazonian Coastal Mud Banks (French Guiana) ArchiMer
Zorrilla, Noelia Abascal; Vantrepotte, Vincent; Gensac, Erwan; Huybrechts, Nicolas; Gardel, Antoine.
The coast of French Guiana is characterised by the northwestward migration of large mud banks alongshore and by high concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM) resulting from the strong influence of the Amazon River outflow. Surface OLI SPM concentration, linked to the footprint of the subtidal part of mud banks due to resuspension and migration processes, was used to develop a method to estimate the location of this footprint. A comparison of the results from this method with those obtained by locating the limit of the wave damping, which characterises muddy coasts, revealed good performance of the method based on recurring SPM values. The migration rates of the mud banks in French Guiana were calculated according to the delimitation of their...

GlobCoast, a new dataset for coastal water OCR ArchiMer
Dessailly, David; Loisel, Hubert; Steinmetz, François; Vantrepotte, Vincent; Satra Le Bris, Catherine; Ramon, Didier; Meillon, Julien.
In the frame of GlobCoast project (11/2012-11/2015), funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), a completely new dataset covering the global coastal waters has been processed. For MERIS period (2002-2012), SPM, Chlorophyl, acdom, DOC, Kd, anw and bbp, are now available at global scale at 1 km resolution. Monthly climatologies (with variation coefficient), eight days and monthly means are available. Results of advanced time series analysis from census-X11 method (trend, seasonal and irregular contribution) are also available. The data, projected on a sinusoidal equal-area grid, have been filtered to only keep the coastal waters. Even with filtering each image has a potential of 64 millions of pixels. To deal with this a specific storage format...

Using CDOM optical properties for estimating DOC concentrations and pCO(2) in the Lower Amazon River ArchiMer
Valerio, Aline De Matos; Kampel, Milton; Vantrepotte, Vincent; Ward, Nicholas D.; Sawakuchi, Henrique Oliveira; Da Silva Less, Diani Fernanda; Neu, Vania; Cunha, Alan; Richey, Jeffrey.
Coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is one of the major contributors to the absorption budget of most freshwaters and can be used as a proxy to assess non-optical carbon fractions such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)). Nevertheless, riverine studies that explore the former relationships are still relatively scarce, especially within tropical regions. Here we document the spatial-seasonal variability of CDOM, DOC and pCO(2), and assess the potential of CDOM absorption coefficient (a(CDOM)(412)) for estimating DOC concentration and pCO(2) along the Lower Amazon River. Our results revealed differences in the dissolved organic matter (DOM) quality between clearwater (CW) tributaries and the Amazon River...

A simple empirical band-ratio algorithm to assess suspended particulate matter from remote sensing over coastal and inland waters of Vietnam: application to the VNREDSat-1/NAOMI sensor ArchiMer
Dinh Ngoc, Dat; Loisel, Hubert; Vantrepotte, Vincent; Chu Xuan, Huy; Nguyen Minh, Ngoc; Verpoorter, Charles; Meriaux, Xavier; Thi Minh, Hanh Pham; Le Thi, Huong; Le Vu Hong, Hai; Nguyen Van, Thao.
VNREDSat-1 is the first Vietnamese satellite enabling the survey of environmental parameters such as vegetation and water coverages, or surface water quality at medium spatial resolution (from 2.5 to 10 meters depending on the considered channel). The NAOMI sensor on board VNREDSat-1 has the required spectral bands to assess the suspended particulate matter concentration, SPM. Because recent studies have shown that the remote sensing reflectance, Rrs(ƒÜ), at the blue (450 ¡V 520 nm), green (530 ¡V 600 nm), and red (620 ¡V 690 nm) spectral bands can be assessed from NAOMI with a good accuracy, the present study is dedicated to the development and validation of an algorithm (hereafter referred to as V1SPM) to assess SPM from Rrs(ƒÜ) over inland and coastal...

Mangrove‐Derived Organic and Inorganic Carbon Exchanges Between the Sinnamary Estuarine System (French Guiana, South America) and Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Ray, Raghab; Thouzeau, Gerard; Walcker, Romain; Vantrepotte, Vincent; Gleixner, Gerd; Morvan, Sylvain; Devesa, Jeremy; Michaud, Emma.
There is growing evidence that a substantial fraction of the dissolved organic and inorganic carbon (DOC and DIC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) can be exported from mangroves to the ocean. Yet our understanding of C fluxes in mangrove forests is limited to only few regional studies that exclude the world's longest sediment dispersal system connected to the Amazon River. The present study aims at (1) examining tidal fluctuations of DOC, POC, and DIC; their isotopes; and optical properties such as chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and (2) estimating their exchange fluxes between the mangroves and adjacent coastal water in the Sinnamary estuary, French Guiana. Time series observation highlighted that physical processes coupled to tides...

Satellite and In Situ Monitoring of Chl-a, Turbidity, and Total Suspended Matter in Coastal Waters: Experience of the Year 2017 along the French Coasts ArchiMer
Gohin, Francis; Bryère, Philippe; Lefebvre, Alain; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Savoye, Nicolas; Vantrepotte, Vincent; Bozec, Yann; Cariou, Thibault; Conan, Pascal; Coudray, Sylvain; Courtay, Gaelle; Françoise, Sylvaine; Goffart, Anne; Hernández Fariñas, Tania; Lemoine, Maud; Piraud, Aude; Raimbault, Patrick; Rétho, Michael.
The consistency of satellite and in situ time series of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), Turbidity and Total Suspended Matters (TSM) was investigated at 17 coastal stations throughout the year 2017. These stations covered different water types, from relatively clear waters in the Mediterranean Sea to moderately turbid regions in the Bay of Biscay and the southern bight of the North-Sea. Satellite retrievals were derived from MODIS/AQUA, VIIRS/NPP and OLCI-A/Sentinel-3 spectral reflectance. In situ data were obtained from the coastal phytoplankton networks SOMLIT (CNRS), REPHY (Ifremer) and associated networks. Satellite and in situ retrievals of the year 2017 were compared to the historical seasonal cycles and percentiles, 10 and 90, observed in situ. Regarding the...

Dynamics of the Estuarine Turbidity Maximum Zone from Landsat-8 Data: The Case of the Maroni River Estuary, French Guiana ArchiMer
Abascal-zorrilla, Noelia; Vantrepotte, Vincent; Huybrechts, Nicolas; Ngoc, Dat Dinh; Anthony, Edward J.; Gardel, Antoine.
The estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) zone occurs in river estuaries due to the effects of tidal dynamics, density-driven residual circulation and deposition/erosion of fine sediments. Even though tropical river estuaries contribute proportionally more to the sediment supply of coastal areas, the ETM in them has been hardly studied. In this study, surface suspended particulate matter (SPM) determined from OLI (Operational Land Imager)-Landsat 8images was used to gain a better understanding of the spatio-temporal dynamics of the ETM of the tropical Maroni estuary (located on the Guianas coast, South America). A method to estimate the remotely-sensed ETM location and its spatiotemporal evolution between 2013 and 2019 was developed. Each ETM was defined from...

Development of a Semi-Analytical Algorithm for the Retrieval of Suspended Particulate Matter from Remote Sensing over Clear to Very Turbid Waters ArchiMer
Han, Bing; Loisel, Hubert; Vantrepotte, Vincent; Meriaux, Xavier; Bryere, Philippe; Ouillon, Sylvain; Dessailly, David; Xing, Qianguo; Zhu, Jianhua.
Remote sensing of suspended particulate matter, SPM, from space has long been used to assess its spatio-temporal variability in various coastal areas. The associated algorithms were generally site specific or developed over a relatively narrow range of concentration, which make them inappropriate for global applications (or at least over broad SPM range). In the frame of the GlobCoast project, a large in situ data set of SPM and remote sensing reflectance, R-rs(lambda), has been built gathering together measurements from various coastal areas around Europe, French Guiana, North Canada, Vietnam, and China. This data set covers various contrasting coastal environments diversely affected by different biogeochemical and physical processes such as sediment...

Effect of inherent optical properties variability on the chlorophyll retrieval from ocean color remote sensing: an in situ approach ArchiMer
Loisel, Hubert; Lubac, Bertrand; Dessailly, David; Duforet-gaurier, Lucile; Vantrepotte, Vincent.
The impact of the inherent optical properties (IOP) variability on the chlorophyll, Chl, retrieval from ocean color remote sensing algorithms is analyzed from an in situ data set covering a large dynamic range. The effect of the variability of the specific phytoplankton absorption coefficient, a(phy)/Chl, specific particulate backscattering coefficient, b(bp)/Chl, and colored detrital matter absorption to non-water absorption ratio, a(cdm)/a(nw), on the performance of standard operational algorithms is examined. This study confirms that empirical algorithms are highly dependent on the specifics IOP values (especially b(bp)/Chl and a(cdm)/a(nw)): Chl is over-estimated in waters with specific IOP values higher than averaged values, and vice versa. These...

CDOM-DOC relationship in contrasted coastal waters: implication for DOC retrieval from ocean color remote sensing observation. ArchiMer
Vantrepotte, Vincent; Danhiez, Francois-pierre; Loisel, Hubert; Ouillon, Sylvain; Meriaux, Xavier; Cauvin, Arnaud; Dessailly, David.
Increasing our knowledge on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) spatio-temporal distribution in the coastal ocean represents a crucial challenge for better understanding the role of these ecosystems in the global oceanic carbon cycle. The assessment of DOC concentration from the absorption properties of the colored part of the dissolved organic matter (a(cdom)) was investigated from an extensive data set covering a variety of coastal environments. Our results confirmed that variation in the acdom(412) to DOC ratio (a*(cdom)(412)) can be depicted from the CDOM spectral slope in the UV domain (S275-295). They also evidenced that regional first order variation in both a*(cdom)(412) and S275-295 are highly correlated to variation in acdom(412). From these...
