The genus Pseudoscopelus Lutken, 1892 is easily distinguished from the other Chiasmodontidae by the presence of well-defined rows of photophores. Until 2005, eight species were known. Pseudoscopelus scriptus was the first described by Lutken in 1892, then P. sagamianus by Tanaka in 1908, P. stellatus by Beebe in 1932 and P. altipinnis by Parr in 1933. Later in 1934, Fowler described three new species: P. microps, P. cephalus, and P. obtusifrons. These three species, known from only one specimen each, have not been recorded since. Lastly, an easily distinguishable species, P. scutatus, was discovered by Krefft in 1971. In a recent review, Prokoviev and Kukuev (2005, 2006) confirmed the validity of all species and described a new one P. aphos,... |

From the 8(th) to the 11(th) April 2007, at Reunion Island (Indian Ocean), some fish were collected at sea surface after the eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise. Among these were eleven specimens of Neocentropogon profundus (Scorpaenoidei: Tetrarogidae). Six species of this genus have been described: two from the Pacific Ocean, N. japonicus Matsubara, 1943 and N. trimaculatus Chan, 1966; four from the Indian Ocean, N. affinis (Lloyd, 1909) from the Gulf of Martaban, Myanmar, N. aeglefinus (Weber, 1913) from the Halmahera Sea, Timor Sea, probably a junior synonym of N. affinis, N. profundus (Smith, 1958) off Mozambique, and N. mesedai Klausewitz, 1985 from the Mismaris-Trough, Red Sea. The eleven specimens found at Reunion constitute the largest available... |

More than 8060 fishes of twelve different species were rodcaught in La Tremblade between 1949 and 1964 in Seudre Estuary and along the Côte Sauvage beach. The meagre represents 46 % of catches, the mullets 20 % and the spotted bass 15 %. The most common fishes caught early in spring are the bass, then the flounder and the spotted bass. The eagle ray, the eel, the sand-smelt, the conger and the mullets are more abundant in July. Whereas the gilt-head and the meagre are mostly caught in August. At least 62 % of catches have affinities for warm temperate waters. There are somme connections between the abundance of catches and climatic changes. NOT CONTROLLED OCR |

A recapitulation of the records of tropical fishes from European Atlantic waters shows that 67.6 % were fishes caught from the upper slope, between approximately 200 and 600 m; 19.8 % were fishes caught from the continental shelf; and 13.5 % were specimens caught from the middle slope, between 700 and 1 300 m. Since 1963, the upper slope species have made regular northward range extensions off of south Portugal to north-western Ireland (about 55 degrees 30' N), more and less rapidly, about 30 years for Cyttopsis roseus and only 6 years for Sphoeroides pachygaster. The continental shelf species, observed from 1969 but mostly from 1981, have a northward range to south-eastern Ireland (about 52 degrees N), but 65.2 % of them have been caught off the south of... |

ln the Bay of Biscay, during 1986, there were a beaching -strand of Dalatias licha. One the one hand, the cod, Gadus morhua, spawning during winter, one the other hand, the meagre, Argyrosomus regius and Senegalese sole, Solea senegalensis, spawning during summer were more numeros than usual. There are probably connections berween their higher relative abundance and temperatures of colder last winters, for the cod, and warmer summers, for the two other fishes. One witch, Glyptocephalus cynoglossus were caught in the south of 46°N. One double-headed foetus of spur-dog, Squalus acanthias is recorded. NOT CONTROLLED OCR |

Presence of two populations of Norwegian topknot, Phrynorhombus norvegicus (Pleuronectiformes: Scophthalmidae), in western European seas. <br>The Norwegian topknot Phrynorhombus norvegicus (Gunther, 1862) is a little flatfish belonging to the scoplithalmid family. Generally, in the literature, the habitat of this species is mentioned to be rocky bottoms of the north-eastern European seas between 10 to 180 in depth, while few references noticed its presence in the same area and depth on muddy bottoms as well. A study of fisheries data conducted by the trawlers of ISTPM and IFREMER between 1976 to 2001 in Celtic sea and Bay of Biscaye shows that Norwegian Topknot is a rarely caught species with 423 specimens fished in 25 years. Moreover, this analysis... |

One species, fished in 1999 in the Bay of Biscay, determinated during 2001 according to two photographs, Aristostomias tittmanni, is recorded for the first time in the European Atlantic. Six other species, five fished with a pelagic trawl, Bathylagichthys greyae, Melanostomias bartonbeani, Macroparalepis affinis, Lobianchia gemellarii and Melanonus zugmayeri, one fished with a bottom trawl Ophidion barbatum, were recorded for the first time in tbe Bay of Biscay. The pelagic ichtyological fauna about -500 m, -1000m and -1500 m depth has changed between 1966 to 1968 and 2001 with a decrease of temperate cold affinities species, mostly Benthosema glaciale, and an increase of temperate warm affinities species, mostly Ceratoscopelus maderensis. This is a guide to the fishes of the Bay of Biscay, an important fishing area for French and Spanish ports on the Atlantic seaboard. It offers a precise and documented overview along with detailed maps of the families and species of fishes in the Bay of Biscay: distribution according to abundance, catch weight and numbers, spring and autumn densities, relative richness according to area. This work is a unique source of information, a long felt need, and constitutes a baseline reference for potential future changes caused by climate change or human activities. |
