The freshwater Mysidacea of The Netherlands are presently composed of three species. The indigenous mysid, Neomysis integer (Leach, 1814) has recently been joined by two Pontocaspian species, Limnomysis benedeni Czerniavsky, 1882 and Hemimysis anomala G.O. Sars, 1907. All three species now coexist in the Dutch Rhine. The present paper deals with the first records of L. benedeni in The Netherlands with ecological notes on the three species. |

INTRODUCTION During an excursion to Norway organized by the Department of Systematic Zoology of the Rijksuniversiteit of Leiden in August 1973, I had the opportunity to make some observations on Turbellarians of salt-marshes and rocky shores of the Trondheimsfjord (63o 37' N 9° 43' Ε) and the Stjörnfjord (63o 47' Ν 10° 7' Ε), a fjord connected with the Trondheimsfjord. MATERIAL AND METHODS The greater triclad flatworms were mainly collected by turning stones on the salt-marshes and rocky shores. On the salt-marshes soil samples were taken. Each sample covered an area of 25 cm2 and was 3 cm thick. For obtaining the animals the soil samples were put in a jar filled with sea water. Lack of oxygen, due to decay of the vegetable matter, and the light of a lamp... |

The Ponto-Caspian isopod, Jaera istri Veuille, 1979, an endemic species of the river Danube, invaded the lower river Rhine in 1997. This paper provides notes on its identification and first records in the lower Rhine, and documents its subsequent population development. |

An investigation has been made on the distribution of Nymphaea alba and N. Candida in the Netherlands. During 1977 7 new localities of N. Candida were discovered, while from three other localities material was present in the Rijksherbarium Leiden, so that now 11 localities of the species are known. The distribution in the Netherlands seems to be discontinuous and is restricted to a part of the Fluviatile district and the borders of the Drenthian district, in the northern part of the country (fig. 1). The discovery of the species by TÜXEN (1955) in Niedersachsen may indicate, that the species can be expected to occur in more localities in northwestern Germany, connecting the northern localities in the Netherlands with those of the main area in eastern... |

Late Quaternary (Eemian) deposits of the Netherlands contain shells that resemble those of living Mytilus galloprovincialis. Similar broad-shelled mytilids also occur in estuaries of the southwestern Netherlands together with slender individuals typical of M. edulis. We sampled living mussels along a depth gradient in the Oosterschelde to a) investigate whether a relation exists between shell shape and depth, b) test if the broadshelled specimens might represent M. galloprovincialis (or a hybrid with M. edulis) and c) assess by inference if the Quaternary specimens might be attributed to M. galloprovincialis as well. In order to do so, we compared genetic (length polymorphism of Me 15/16, COIII sequences and AFLPs) and shellmorphological characteristics... |

Does the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis feel well in the Netherlands (Hirudinea)? This paper provides information on the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis Linnaeus, 1758 particularly in The Netherlands. Although this species was common in The Netherlands in the 18th century, nowadays it is very rare. Most animals were found in waters on sandy soil (71%): dune pools (10%) and pleistocene sandy areas (61%), where it inhabits especially soft water moor and heathland pools. About 20% of the records originate from river areas, where the species can be found in breakthrough ponds and oxbow lakes. Only 9% of the records are from fen and clay areas. Records of single specimens are not proof of an established population, because these specimens could also... |

A hydrobiological description of eight ditches in the Dutch inland polders "Oude Land van Strijen" and "St.-Anthoniepolder" (province of South-Holland) is given. The flora and macrofauna (table 2 and 3) have been studied in July and October 1971. A few chemical data (chloride-content and conductivity) of the water are presented. In the northern part of the area the percolating water is fresh due to the influence of the "Binnenbedijkte Maas", one of the few real freshwater lakes of the Deltaic region. In the southern part it is brackish due to the influence of the „Hollands Diep". The bottomprofile of the polders shows heavy river-clay poor in chalk (upper 40-100 cm) on peat. The examined ditches are hardly polluted and the water is clear. On the bottom of... |

Doto uva Marcus, 1955 is a nudibranch species recorded from the Brazilian and Chilean coast. In spite of its wide distribution, D. uva has been described only superficially, mainly as to the pattern of its coloration, external morphology, radular teeth and reproductive system. Here we substantially extend this description, paying special attention to the morphology, anatomy and histology of the digestive and reproductive system. Furthermore, new data on the morphology of the central nervous system and its cell types are given, and finally, the egg mass is described. On the basis of these data, we consider the Doto specimens described from Chile conspecific with those from Brazil. |
