| The exploitation of offshore mussel farms is becoming important throughout the world, but monitoring this activity remains a difficult task. Here, we propose a specific method for this purpose. A total of 140 long-lines were monitored on a mussel culture ground in the French Mediterranean Sea during four experimental surveys deploying multibeam sonar devices mounted on poles (Reson Seabat 6012, 455 kHz) on small boats. | L'expérimentation mise en œuvre dans l'étang de Thau a permis de comparer, à une échelle la plus proche possible de celle des exploitations commerciales, les performances zootechniques d'une population d'huîtres triploïdes à celles d'une population témoin diploïde d'écloserie ainsi qu'à celles d'une population issue du captage naturel. Le gain moyen de poids total sur 6 mois entre février et septembre 1998 est respectivement de 100, 70 et 62 g pour les huîtres triploïdes, diploïdes témoins d'écloserie et diploïdes naturelles, confirmant la nette supériorité de croissance des huîtres triploïdes. | La densité d'élevage des mollusques est un des facteurs importants qui conditionnent la qualité de la production. Dans le bassin de Thau, une réflexion est actuellement en cours pour mettre en place un schéma des structures encadrant les pratiques conchylicoles de manière à améliorer et régulariser la qualité des huîtres. Samplings are carried out in March, June, September and December. In this way this network assess seasonal mortality, growth and quality of cupped oysters, in which it is a tool for trend estimations, and then for ecosystem management or scientific studies. | The network REMORA by IFREMER quarterly follows each year 2 batches of Pacific cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas ("juveniles"= 1 year old; and "adults" = 2 years old) on various sites among the main French oyster areas. The network monitored 46 sites in 2004, including the 7 new sites added in 2003. The network REMORA thus assess seasonal survival, growth and quality of cupped oysters. It is a tool for trend estimations, ecosystem management and a reference frame for scientific studies. Globally speaking, the year 2004 was a good year for oyster farming, with a low mortality and a fast growth. The rearing yield (survival x growth) reached 2.0 for adults instead of 1.8 usually. | We grew Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in a French Mediterranean coastal breeding area, the Thau lagoon, to examine the influence of stocking density on their growth and quality (i.e. condition index and biochemical composition). | The Aquaculture Resources Department's mollusc network (REMORA) federates six coastal Ifremer laboratories. Since 1993, REMORA has implemented a unique national protocol to account for the variability in the growth of Pacific oysters farmed in 39 sites within the main production areas, from Normandy to the Mediterranean Sea. In 1995, the goal of the network was expanded to include monitoring of a second age class. To do so, the protocol developed for adults was adapted to monitor juveniles. The data, organised in Excel worksheets with a specific application written in Visual Basic, allows for inter-station and inter-annual comparisons and thereby constitutes a database of interest to oyster farmers, scientists and administrative personnel. |
