On the use of satellite data in a general-circulation ocean model - altimeter and scatterometer data ArchiMer
Boukthir, M; Verron, J; Barnier, B.
This paper examines how satellite altimeter and scatterometer measurements could be jointly used in a numerical ocean model in an attempt to simulate a realistic ocean circulation. The aim of the study is to determine quantitatively how sensitive the efficiency of the assimilation process may be to the variability of the wind stress curl and to evaluate the ability of the Topex/Poseidon altimetric data to correct for the sampling of scatterometer wind data that is to be provided by the forthcoming ERS 1 and NSCAT satellite missions. The model is quasigeostrophic, eddy-resolving and multi-layered, and is applied to the prognostic description of the mid-latitude ocean circulation in a schematic box ocean. Satellite altimeter data are simulated from model...

AltiKa: a Ka-band altimetry payload and system for operational altimetry during the GMES period ArchiMer
Vincent, Patrick; Steunou, N; Caubet, E; Phalippou, L; Rey, L; Thouvenot, E; Verron, J.
This paper describes the Ka-band altimetry payload and system that has been studied for several years by CNES, ALCATEL SPACE and some science laboratories. Altimetry is one of the major elements of the ocean observing system to be made sustainable through the GEOSS ( Global Earth Observation System of Systems) and GMES ( Global Monitoring of the Environment and Security) programs. A short review of some mission objectives to be fulfilled in terms of mesoscale oceanography in the frame of the GEOSS and GMES programs is performed. To answer the corresponding requirements, the approach consisting in a constellation of nadir altimeter is discussed. A coupled Ka-band altimeter-radiometer payload is then described; technical items are detailed to explain how...

Assimilation of geosat data into a quasi-geostrophic model of the north-atlantic between 20-degrees and 50-degrees-N - preliminary-results ArchiMer
Verron, J; Molines, Jm; Blayo, E.
Geosat altimeter residuals of the sea surface height (RSSH) are combined with the mean sea surface computed from the non-linear inverse model by Mercier et al. (1991) to provide a synthetic data set of the along-track sea-surface height over the North Atlantic during the period from 5 November 1986 to 2 December 1987. This data set is assimilated into a predictive numerical model of the North Atlantic circulations between 20-degrees and 50-degrees-N. The model is quasigeostrophic, four-layered and has realistic coastline and topography. The ocean circulation is forced by a constant wind stress curl from Hellerman and Rosenstein's data (1983). Nudging is the assimilation technique used to insert sea-surface data information into the model and is carried out...

Effets d'une topographie sous-marine à moyenne échelle sur un écoulement uniforme dans un canal ArchiMer
Nguyen, T; Verron, J.
The tridimensional SPEM numerical model based on primitive equations, initially developed by Haidvogel et al. (1991) is used to explore the effects of an isolated seamount on a simple oceanic flow. The flow configuration chosen is that of a simple rectangular canal in which a uniform current flows and the middle of which contains an axisymmetrical submerged obstacle. The canal has two open boundaries. At these boundaries, specific numerical boundary conditions have been developed to permit long-term numerical integrations. Various situations were explored according to the different parameters of the problem, essentially the Rossby number, the intensity of stratification and the amplitude of the topography. The objective is to indicate the steady and...
