Readers of our first CHARM I atlas will know that almost everything contained within the atlas was original work resulting from two years of intensive study of the Dover Strait by a dedicated and inter- disciplinary team working from bases on either side of the Channel. The present atlas has carried on this eminent precedent, though this time covering the whole of the eastern English Channel (figure 1) and widening considerably the thematic scope. A comparative study of the Sine-saloum (Senegal) and Gambia (The Gambia) estuaries was performed based on trophic model outputs that describe the system structure and functioning. These trophic models were constructed such as to differentiate main energetic flows in the systems and express how climate change may have impacted ecosystem resilience to change. Estuarine fish assemblages are highly resilient despite exposure to vast hydrodynamic variations and stress. Coupled with strong anthropogenic-driven stresses such as fisheries and climate change, ecosystems may undergo severe regime shifts that may weaken their resilience and stability. The eastern English Channel, the narrow channel of water separating northern France and southeast England is an area of intense human use of the array of resources concentrated into its relative small area. The diet composition and feeding habits have been investigated for several economically important indigenous species based on diel surveys collected from the Ubolratana reservoir (Thailand). For some of these populations the daily food ration, feeding periods, ingestion and evacuation rates were determined using MAXIMS, an iterative computer software utilising 24-hour series of stomach content data obtained in natural populations. The results obtained provide useful information for studies of the trophic relationship in the reservoir and can be explained by some observed migrating patterns of these fish populations. |

An Ecopath model of the southern part of Lake Kivu, a deep African equatorial lake was constructed to quantitatively describe the possible impact of fish introductions in this ecosystem. This study is considered as an initial step in summarizing ecological and biological information, under a coherent framework, on this ecosystem. Fourteen compartments were considered. As a phytoplankton-based food web, it is observed that key food sources are not fully utilized as transfer efficiencies per trophic levels (TL) varies between 4.5 and 9.4%. Twelve diel surveys were carried out in three reservoirs of Sri Lanka viz. Minneriya, Udawalawe and Victoria, to investigate diel feeding patterns, daily ration and relative food consumption in fish populations. Stomach content weights of different size classes of various fish species in the three reservoirs in 12 diel surveys were analysed using an iterative method, MAXIMS. Predominantly herbivorous or detritivorous fish species such as Amblypharyngodon melettinus and Oreochromis niloticus exhibited one peak in the diel feeding pattern. Striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus L. 1758 is an economically important species in the Mediterranean Sea and in the northern Atlantic Ocean, where it is exploited from the Bay of Biscay to the southern North Sea (ICES, 2010). In Atlantic waters, there are two main areas where this species is caught, the Bay of Biscay and the eastern English Channel. A mass-balance Ecopath model of coastal areas in the Mekong Delta has been constructed for a quantitative description of the trophic structure of the ecosystem. The model is used to estimate the important biological parameters and relationships among the different ecologically important groups. The model is based on the data collected from bottom trawling. There are 14 functional groups based on 58 species from coastal areas in the Mekong Delta survey such as shrimps, squids, crabs, mackerel, small pelagics, demersal fishes, benthic feeders, predator fishes and trash fish.
