Due to its perennial statute, fruit sector is the first consumer of plant protection products per hectare. This may also be a direct consequence of a historical cultivar selection that neglected the tree rusticity for years, and mostly encouraged high yield, common quality and aesthetical properties. The ecological footprint of fruit cultivation is therefore very high, and not sustainable. Many fungicides and insecticides shall be used, even in organic farming, to face sanitary problems. Considering the time necessary to create new cultivars, an urgent change of paradigm is needed. The French Ministry recently launched a mission involving many scientists active in this field, to start integrating environmental purposes into the vegetal selection devices.... |

Among the various forms of agroforestry, spatial combinations of fruit trees and market gardening are currently experiencing strong growth In France, the SMART project, which brought together several research teams and development organisations, aimed to explore these systems, taking into account the technical, agro and socio-economic dimensions. The results of the surveys and observations carried out among farmers associated with this project showed that these systems mainly concerned farms engaged in short food supply chains for which diversity was a central element for ommercial strategy and performance. Diversification of products is therefore a central justification for the intercropping of fruit trees... |

Fruit growers often suffer economic losses due to insect damages. The available natural pest control products are not always effective; and for organic fruit growers options for direct control are relatively few. EcoOrchard, a CORE Organic Plus project (2015-18) tracked EU farmers knowledge of Functional AgroBiodiversity (FAB) and generated new knowledge in order to successfully use FAB in orchards by a joint field experiment across seven countries of perennial flower strips to assess impact on natural enemies, codling moths and yield. The project also established the BIONetwork as a European-wide network of stakeholders for collecting, sharing and improving scientific and practical knowledge and experience in FAB management, and developed simple FAB... |

A new pest has been officially described in France in 2010. Drosophila suzukii (also called Spotted-wing Drosophila) attacks many species of fruits, before ripening, and economic consequences are very important. Because of a very high fecundity and a great lack of knowledge on this invasive pest, there is a high need of applied research to provide efficient techniques to conventional and also organic farmers. Indeed, organic cherry or strawberry production is directly threatened by this new pest. The poster presents different control strategies and state of art for each of them. |
