Pluimvee: aanbieden van ruwvoer Organic Eprints
Wagenaar, Jan-Paul.

Practical implications of increasing 'natural living' through suckling systems in organic dairy calf rearing Organic Eprints
Wagenaar, Jan-Paul; Langhout, Jos.
The introduction of suckling systems in organic dairy calf rearing has the potential to enhance animal welfare in terms of ‘natural living’ and to live up to consumers’ expectations about organic agriculture. This study describes the implications of suckling systems in a practical organic dairy context. Results show that farmers can successfully develop and implement a suckling system in calf rearing. The consumption of mothers’ milk resulted in high weaning weights at 3 months of age. No immediate animal health problems linked to suckling systems occurred. Compared with traditional bucket feeding of milk, suckling systems resulted in increased natural behaviour such as calf cow bonding, natural sucking behaviour and care-taking behaviour. Some farmers...

Performance of organic and low input livestock systems: a matter of sound design? Organic Eprints
Spoolder, Hans; Biavati, Bruno; Borgsteede, Fred; Davies, David; Klocke, Peter; Maurer, Veronika; Nagel, Philip; Nicholas, Phillipa; van Krimpen, Marinus; Mejer, Helena; Modesto, Monica; Strozzi, Gian Paolo; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Vermeer, Herman; Wagenaar, Jan-Paul; Zollitsch, Werner; Sundrum, Albert.
The QLIF project has targeted a variety of issues to make organic animal production (dairy cattle, pig, poultry) more safe, develop alternative methods to promote animal health and improve product quality. This workshop will discuss these aims as well as the QLIF achievements to date. It will also address our way of assessing the quality of our organic farms. We ask the question what the advantages are of doing this by looking at the output of a farm, such as yield, animal welfare and environmental issues. Alternatively, we also want to know what benefits there are in looking at how the farm is organised, via input factors such as housing design, nutrition, management quality. Two invited speakers will state their preference. Legislation, certification and...

Farm level factors associated with feather pecking in organic laying hens Organic Eprints
Bestman, Monique; Wagenaar, Jan-Paul.
Farm-level factors that could be associated with feather pecking of layers kept in organic farming systems were monitored in 63 flocks from 26 farms located in different areas of The Netherlands. Data on housing and management practices were collected and plumage damage as a measure of feather pecking was scored at 50 weeks of age or older. No or little plumage damage was found in 18 (29%) flocks, moderate damage in 12 (19%) flocks and severe damage in 33 (52%) flocks. A high percentage of hens in the flock using the outdoor run, a young age at purchase and an increasing number of cockerels present in the flock were found to significantly decrease feather pecking damage at 50 weeks or older. Factors associated with increased usage of the outdoor run were...

Kälberaufzucht in der modernen Milchviehhaltung Organic Eprints
Langhout, Jos; Wagenaar, Jan-Paul.

Neijenhuis, Francesca; Verkaik, Jan; Verwer, C; Smolders, G.; Wagenaar, Jan-Paul.

Experiential science as a novel scientific discipline Organic Eprints
Baars, Ton; Wagenaar, Jan-Paul.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. This paper positions experiential science as a new discipline in science with its own characteristics and principles. New elements in experiential science are the recognition of unique patterns in relation to previous actions and the reflection on intuitive, unique actions. There is a need for a new vocabulary to develop experiential science as a novel discipline.

Nauta, Wytze; Slingenbergh, Gerjan; Vredevoogd, Wim; Wagenaar, Jan-Paul; Bestman, Monique.
Since 2009 a small scale breeding and selection project started on a biodynamic farm in The Netherlands. The overall goal is to breed stronger hens that do well under organic conditions and show lower rates of mortality and at the same time have roosters that can be reared for meat production. In this paper results concerning egg and meat production are given, as well as thoughts about economic aspects.

leverbotinfecties herkenne, genezen en voorkomen: leverbot in kaart gebracht Organic Eprints
Wagenaar, Jan-Paul.
Dairy cows grazing outside or fed indoors with fresh grass are increasingly infected by liver fluke, a parasitic flatworm. The losses resulting from liver fluke disease are generally underestimated. A research project has recently developed a tool for dairy farmers to assess the impact of this disease on their farms and to gain insight into measures to address the problem.

Biokennisbericht #24: Zuivel en Rundveevlees. Thema: Kalveren bij de koe Organic Eprints
Verwer, C; Wagenaar, Jan-Paul.
'Kalveren bij de koe' is een heel aaibaar concept om dierenwelzijn te bevorderen. Het project was de afgelopen jaren goed voor veel aandacht. Het principe lijkt simpel , maar in de praktijk komt er veel bij kijken om succesvol kalveren bij de moeder op te fokken. In dit BioKennisbericht ervaringen van 'Kalveren bij de Koe' - boeren uit de periode 2009 tot 2011, en de vraag of de biologische landbouw met dit concept voldoende onderscheidend kan zijn.

SPECIES IDENTITY IMPORTANT TO ACHIEVE BENEFITS OF DIVERSE GRASSLAND MIXTURES Organic Eprints
de Wit, Jan; van Eekeren, Nick; Wagenaar, Jan-Paul; Smeding, Frans.
In semi-natural grasslands, plant diversity has shown to correlate with increased primary production and reduced weed invasion. If such positive effects also apply to low input agricultural grasslands, the resource-use efficiency could be improved. To investigate whether other grassland species and diverse grassland mixtures could be more productive, a grassland on a shallow sandy soil in the south of the Netherlands was sown in April 2009 with seven non-leguminous grassland mixtures. Though some sown species vanished quickly, diverse mixtures proved less susceptible for invading species three years after sowing (p<0.05). Yields in 2010 and 2011 were 11% higher for mixtures with two functional groups of grassland species compared with mixtures with...

Happy Dutch organic calves: suckling systems in organic dairying in the Netherlands Organic Eprints
Wagenaar, Jan-Paul.
Organic dairy farmers in The Netherlands, supported by the Louis Bolk Institute, developed a calf rearing system in which newborn heifer calves suckle their mother or a nurse cow up to three months of age. Consumers played an important role. Their critical questions made farmers take the initiative to investigate and develop an alternative way (more animal friendly) to raise organic dairy calves. Increased animal welfare and health were the focus of system development, but the practical and economic feasibility of the rearing system also received attention. Farmers implementing a suckling system aim to raise well-developed dairy cows that fit easily into the dairy herd and are adapted to the existing farming conditions. Natural bonding between calves and...

Suckling as an alternative rearing system for replacement calves on dairy farms Organic Eprints
Langhout, Jos; Wagenaar, Jan-Paul.
The aim is to develop an alternative calf rearing system for replacement calves that will improve animal welfare on dairy farms and meets the requirements of farmers in terms of practicality and cost. On the dairy farms that make use of a suckling system are calves suckled by their mother or a nurse cow, for a duration that ranges from three days up to three months. Compared to artificial calf rearing, suckling systems are beneficial to the welfare of calves. The calves will be nursed by their mother, suckled with milk, learn to eat roughage at a younger age, have social contact with other calves and cows and have space enough to exercise and play.
