Environmental effects on the distribution of corallimorpharians in Tanzania OceanDocs
Öhman, M.C.; Kuguru, B.L.; Muhando, C.A.; Wagner, G.M.; Mbije, N.E..
This study examined the distribution and abundance of corallimorpharians (Cnidaria, Anthozoa) in Tanzania in relation to different aspects of the coral reef environment. Five reefs under varying degrees of human disturbance were investigated using the line intercepttransect and point technique. Corallimorpharian growth and the composition of the substratum were quantified in different habitats within reefs: the inner and middle reef flat, the reef crest, and at the 2and 4 m depths on the reef slope. Corallimorpharians occurred on all the reefs and 5 species were identified: Rhodactis rhodostoma, R. mussoides, Ricordea yuma, Actinodiscus unguja and A. nummiforme. R. rhodostoma was the dominant corallimorpharian at all sites. Within reefs, they had the...

Coral reefs and their management in Tanzania OceanDocs
Wagner, G.M..
Coral reefs are very important in Tanzania, both ecologically and socio-economically, as major fishing grounds and tourist attractions. Numerous fringing and patch reefs are located along about two-thirds of Tanzania’s coastline. These reefs have been partially to severely degraded by human (primarily destructive fishing practices) and natural (particularly coral bleaching) causes. These immediate human causes have been brought about by various socioeconomic root causes, particularly poverty and lack of proper management. After decades of human and natural impacts there has been only limited reef recovery. This paper presents a region-by-region analysis of trends in the condition of coral reefs in Tanzania in relation to the causes of damage. While earlier...

Tanzania National Report - Phase 1: Integrated Problem Analysis OceanDocs
Francis, J.; Ngwale, J.; Salema, R.; Mvungi, A.; Wagner, G.M..
The Advisory Committee on Protection of the Sea (ACOPS) in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, is implementing the Global Environmental Facility (GEF)-Medium Size Project (MSP) on the Development and Protection of the Coastal and Marine Environment in Sub-Saharan Africa. The ultimate goal of the GEF MSP is to develop a sound portfolio of proposals for interventions to be presented in the Partnership Conference scheduled for September 2002. One of the main objectives of the GEF MSP is to identify, characterise, and prioritise causes of environmental degradation, as well as hot spots and sensitive areas in selected countries. This objective has been...
