EFFECT OF LEGUME INTEGRATION AND APPLICATION OF ORGANIC FERTILIZERS ON SOIL NUTRIENT STATUS AND KALE YIELD IN KABETE, KENYA Organic Eprints
Chepkoech, Caroline; Onwonga, Richard; Wahome, Raphael Githaiga; Henning Høgh, Jensen.
Kale production in Kenya is being hindered by declining soil fertility among other factors. A study was done on ways of improving soil fertility, quality and yield of kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) in Kabete - Kenya, through use of farmyard manure and Minjingu rock phosphate with integration of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) and white lupin (Lupinus albus cv. Amiga) either as an intercrop or in rotation. The study was carried out for two seasons during the long rains of 2014 and short rains of 2014. Experimental layout was a Randomized Complete Block Design with a split plot arrangement replicated thrice. The main plots were cropping systems; (Crop rotation, Monocropping and intercropping). The split plots were organic fertilizers (Farmyard Manure...

Impact of Organic Vegetable Production System in Kiambu and Kajiado Counties of Kenya Organic Eprints
Ndungu, Samuel Kiruku; Macharia , Ibrahim Ndegwa; Kahuthia, Ruth Gathu; Wahome, Raphael Githaiga.
The study was conducted to evaluate the impact of organic production system on profitability of smallholder vegetable production systems in the two counties so as to appraise its contribution to improvement of rural livelihoods. The study collected data on costs and returns for a sample of 208 smallholder vegetable farmers who were composed of 78 organic and 130 conventional farmers. Impact of organic production system was evaluated using propensity score matching technique. Organic vegetable production system was found to have a positive significant impact of increasing farm gross margin by US$0.58 representing 89.5% among smallholder producers in Kiambu and Kajiado Counties of Kenya. The study recommended promotion of organic production system as a tool...

TRACEABILITY AMONG SMALLHOLDERS IN ORGANIC FRESH PRODUCE VALUE CHAINS: CASE OF NAIROBI Organic Eprints
Gichure, Josphat Njenga; Wahome, Raphael Githaiga; Karuri, Edward; Karantininis, Kostas.
Traceability enhances information sharing and disclosure thereby increasing trust among stakeholder along value chains. This research evaluated information flow along organic fresh produce value chains using a participatory study of organic certified farmers and outlets around Nairobi in 2012. Traceability was limited as majority of stakeholders were smallholders who had no functional traceability system. Presence of traceability was positively related to two factor groups; organizational activities and personnel perception. Variables in the organizational activities were also interrelated and include documentation, certification by other quality management standards, training on food safety and traceability system and monitoring. In addition, group...

Options and challenges for organic milk production in East African smallholder farms under certified organic crop production Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Smolders, Gidi; Wahome, Raphael Githaiga; Odhong, Charles; Kiggundu, Muhammad; Kabi, Fred; Nalubwama, Sylvia; Halberg, Niels.
Many East African smallholder farms with certified organic crop production, also rear animals. Although farming systems are mixed, there is often very little integration and synergy between the different enterprises. The aim of this article is to suggest and discuss different development scenarios for organic dairy production, based on data from three East African studies of dairy production at certified organic cash crop farms. The following questions are explored for two categories of ‘model farms’ in Kenya and Uganda, respectively: 1) Can smallholder farmers benefit from keeping organic dairy cattle, and under which conditions can it be viable, given the current challenges? 2) How can the dairy production be integrated into the farm and create synergy...
